If the two world wars never occurred, that's actually quite likely.

So, nuclear battleships might exist after all. And I'm assuming a lot of larger powers will have them. Might have to update my naval app.

Can't we have that Anglo-Japanese alliance to stick it to the reds?

Aircraft have already started taking a more limited importance. War between major state actors is more likely to be a missile trade off and increasingly become more automated as time goes on. Navies today aren't likely to ever get close to have such engagements.

Still, combat doctrines are still rather backwards, at least compared to RL. Who doesn't like big warships after all? :p

On a more serious note, I don't think battleships are completely irrevalant. Anti-missile and aircraft defenses do exist after all. Sometimes a bit of extra firepower can be useful after all.

They'd be good for an anti-air or missile platform, or if they're used for littoral bombardment, but they're also very large targets.

An AShM typically has a range of ~500 - 900 km, the guns on navy ships typically have a range of ~30 - 60 km.

If you're trying to get in range to use them, you'll be dead already.

missiles = lots of money

naval shells = cheeper.

Tbh my battleships will probably be more missile focussed, but I'll leave most combat to subs and destroyers.

Boats are just floating boxes for moving missiles closer to where you want them.

Lady Scylla wrote:So after discussing it with Old Tyrannia, we have come to an agreement.

Formal Nation Name: East Asian Federation
Informal Nation Name (optional): EAF, Ren
Government Type: Tripartist Oligarchy
Head of State: Chancellor Mitsue Nara
Head of Government: Prime Minister Hagiwara Heiji
Population: 93 million
Military Population: 1.3 million total
Map: Taiwan, Ryukyu Islands, and Kyushu Island
History: Following the union of the Kingdoms of Tungning and and Ryukyu, the 'Lotus Kingdom' invaded the Japanese island of Kyushu in 1694. The Renese invasion proved successful after several years of conflict, establishing a Renese presence on the island, and Southern Japan. The Renese kingdom held naval supremacy in the southern waters for much of the time into the 18th century. During the late 18th and early 19th century, Renese supremacy in the region started to weaken, and the Kingdom, stricken with internal strife and a series of revolts, was defeated in the War of the Sun by Japan (1870-1876) which saw the establishment of a Japanese protectorate.

While still de facto independent, the Renese Kingdom continued to decline. The Japanese failed to retake Kyushu from the Renese in the War of the Sun, but was capable of bringing the Kingdom more in line with its foreign policy. After years of famine, the Renese Kingdom was toppled in the Winter Revolution (1915) thanks to support from the Japanese government. The resulting civil war nearly expelled the entirety of the Chinese ruling class and citizens from the island of Taiwan, and saw the collapse of many social and government structures throughout the Kingdom.

In an effort to maintain their sovereignty, and stability, the Renese military managed to secure the nation with Japanese support, and through the Kyushu Accords, established the East Asian Federation. The Accords formed the EAF into a government dictated by a Chancellery who oversaw Parliamentary function, which was a tricameral legislature. Due to the clash of ideologies, the military saw it best to allow an equal table for Labour, Business, and the State to discuss and decide policies. The Accords established the EAF's de facto independence, but retained its protectorate status by Japan, subsequently limiting its foreign affairs.

This tripartism during the 20th century saw major reforms to Renese society. The government poured money into infrastructure, education, and the expansion of business, and approached the economy with a syndicalist and state mindset. Sectors were created for businesses which formed syndicates and elected representatives to the Parliament, and certain industries were taken over by the State. Unionization of the workforce allowed the public to discuss matters of policy relating to work more effectively on the Parliament floor, and the State delegated spending and enforced legislation where it was agreed.

Comprehensive social reforms allowed the Renese society to be more open, with inalienable rights being set down under the November Constitution. Rights such as Freedom of Expression, Speech, and Ideas saw the rapid spread of political discourse among the public, and University attendance soured. By the late 1990s, the reforms had turned the EAF's economy around, elevating the nation as a major trade partner, and the nation flourished.

Economic Life (optional): Mixture of Private and State run industries. Businesses in sectors of the economy form Syndicates which appoint representatives to the Parliament. Unionization of the workforce allows Labour Unions to elect officials to the Parliament, and State officials represent state interests within Parliamentary sessions. Industries such as energy, and other utilities are managed by the State, and State officials are typically of a Military background.

Accepted.
