1936: A Changed World (RP/Open/OOC)

Postby The Peoples East Africa » Fri Oct 14, 2016 5:00 pm

The year was 1913, the city Vienna. In a coffee shop frequented by Adolf Hitler, Leon Trotsky, Joseph Tito, Sigmund Freud, and Joseph Stalin, terror brewed, as a fiery light appeared in the sky, growing bigger by the second. Soon it became apparent that it was a meteor, heading straight for the them. And in the minutes that followed, Austria and Europe lost a beloved capital and city. But more than just those buildings were lost. Lost were those who would go on to mold the 20th century greater than any other. The men who would kill millions, start a global war, study the human mind, and lead the Yugoslavs. They were all wiped out in an instance, and now the world will never know their influence.

Now YOU take charge of a nation of your choosing, and forge your destiny. They could be a carbon copy, or be beyond recognizing. For the world is different, and 1936 is set to be the most explosive year yet.

Nation Name: German Socialist Republic
Head of State: President Karl Kautsky
Head of Government: Chairman Karl Liebknecht
Capital: Berlin
Population: 68,000,000
Religion in your nation: Germany adheres to a strict policy of Laïcité whereby religion is prohibited from interfering in government affairs and vice versa. However, much of the German population is Christian with Protestants being the most represented and Catholics a large minority.
Ideology: Socialism & Communism
Territory: Wiemar Borders

Economic description: Germany operates using a market-socialism model while also involving state planning and extensive government investment. Private ownership in the economic sphere is illegal with all enterprises being under social ownership, yet market mechanisms are used to help determine allocation and production of goods. Planning boards theoretically have within their purview the ability to re-direct resources in cases such as excessive waste, consumer needs not being met, or projects deemed in the public interest. Larger strategic sectors such as arms, electricity, railways, and communications are public enterprises on either the national or state level and accountable to their respective legislatures. The national government has stated that at some point in the future this market-socialism will be replaced entirely by a democratic planned-economy. Germany is still recovering from the Great Depression and instability of the early 1930s, but generally has an adequate standard of living. The manufacturing sector remains one of, if not the, most skilled in the world and exports vehicles, machinery, ships, and other manufactured goods globally. It is, however, highly dependent on imports of resources in order to fuel this industrial sector.
Exports: Vehicles, consumer goods, arms, machinery, steel.
Imports Oil, rubber, foodstuff, iron ore, misc raw materials.
Trading partners: Depends on other people's history. Takes a fairly pragmatic approach to trade and will engage with most countries short of outright fascists.

Military description: The German military is generally defensive and orientated towards warding off any attempts at foreign aggression. The standing army is entirely voluntary and is highly trained and motivated, backed by the country's vast industry. Reservists are a mix of volunteers and conscripts who are adequately trained but lack much heavy equipment. Finally there are some 800,000 militiamen who are organized on a local level by unions, factories, schools, and municipal councils. They receive some national and state funding with their primary purpose being to defend whatever area they are raised in utilizing local knowledge as well as augment the regular military in wartime. Control of the air is a key part of defensive strategy and as such the Luftwaffe is an extremely fighter heavy force with bombers being limited to a tactical role. To this end it is equipped with advanced fighter models such as the BF109. The German navy is generally neglected and shipbuilding has been limited to coast defence ships, destroyers, and some submarines with its primary purpose being to defend the nation's coasts.
Military size: 500,000 Active; 650,000 Reserve; 800,000 paramilitary/militia
Military equipment: Kr98k, MG 34, MP 34, Panzer II, BF109. Essentially same as OTL 1936 Germany minus almost all capital ship development.

History (if different):
In the aftermath of the First World War, Germany was harshly divided by the right and left with the relatively centrist "Weimar" government trying to hold these competing factions in check. Many on the German far-left advocated open rebellion against the government immediately after the war, but they were eventually convinced that acting too soon would be disastrous by leaders such as Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. Consequently the failed Spartacist Uprising never took place and the Communist Party of Germany (KDP) continued to gain strength during the 1920s.

The country was once again plunged into economic chaos following the 1929 crash. Both the KDP and the far-right Deutschnationale Volkspartei (DNVP) led by Alfred Hugenberg experienced a surge in membership and were often engaged in street combat through their respective paramilitary wings. As the tenor of violence increased, the KDP tried its best to convert the disillusioned working class and reluctantly cooperated with the Social Democratic Party to forestall a DNVP seizure of power. Together the SDP and KDP formed a parliamentary majority by 1930 and the conservative President Hindenburg became fearful of a communist takeover. When it became apparent that he would appoint Hugenberg as chancellor, the SDP and KDP called for a general strike and mobilized their massive paramilitaries. This brought Germany to its knees and soon the country was in a state of near civil war. Troops and paramilitaries loyal to the left occupied Hamburg, Stuttgart, and the Ruhr while right-wing forces dominated Bavaria, Konigsberg, and much of the rural east. The SDP-KDP parliamentary majority declared the rule of Hindenburg illegitimate and that Otto Wels should serve as president with Karl Liebknecht as his chancellor. Hindenburg was arrested by KDP members of the Berlin police and held in the outskirts of Berlin. An attempt to arrest Hugenberg was botched and he escaped to Munich. The Army was paralyzed, but resistance from the DNVP and Freikorps resulted in fierce fighting in Berlin and Central Germany. What some dubbed the "German Civil War" involved some five months of conventional fighting, political assassinations, and street brawls. Finally the disparate anti-right forces united and drove on Munich, breaking the back of the opposition after brutal urban combat. Scattered skirmishes and violence lasted for several more weeks, but right-wing power was all but broken in Germany. Hugenberg was allegedly killed during the fighting in Munich with rumors abounding of a summary execution.

In the subsequent period known as the "German Revolution," the country undertook wide-ranging reforms which restructured the banking system, expanded workers rights, and enacted a widespread national economic recovery effort (basically the New Deal in OTL). Gradually the left wing of the coalition government came to dominate and, in circumstances still controversial to this day, several of Wels closest advisors were alleged to have collaborate with the DNVP in the late 1920s, forcing his resignation. With the SDP disorganized, Liebknecht was elected President and appointed Paul Levi his chancellor. The KDP government began to enact more far-left socialist and communist laws culminating in the enforcement of social ownership of all medium and large commercial enterprises after compensation to their owners. By 1935 a new constitution was enacted which, among other things, changed the country from a semi-presidential system to a council republic, abolished all private economic property, and defined the country as one adhering to socialist principles. Under this new system, Liebknecht became chairman of national government with Karl Kautsky holding an "elder statesmen" role as a ceremonial president.

Nation Name: Second Polish Republic
Head of state/government: President Edward Rydz-Śmigły (Head of the National Junta)
Capital: Warsaw
Population: 20,161,700
Religion in your nation: Christianity, with the vast majority of Poles Roman Catholics
Ideology: Polish nationalism
Territory: The territory of the Second Polish Republic, minus the Wilno, Nowogrodek, Polesie, Volhynian, Tarnopol and Stanislawow voivodeships.

Economic description: Poland has rebuilt itself after the devastation of the First World War as well as with the Polish-Russian War in 1921. Most Polish industry is located in the west and southwest of the country in areas that were formerly part of the German Empire. The Polish economy saw substantial growth in the 1920's, with the average economic growth rate of 5.24% per anum. Economic growth throughout the Great Depression was slower. Nevertheless, the introduction of the national currency, the złoty in 1924 was given Poland an economic advantage, as it is one of the most stable currencies in Europe. The Great Depression has had less of an effect on Poland that other countries, largely thanks to the implementation of Four Year Plans for economic development conceived by Marshal Józef Piłsudski as well as the stability of the złoty allowed the country to recover quicker. Hyperinflation was brought under control without the need for foreign loans, the only country in Europe to achieve this.

Current obstacles to Polish economic growth include cold to openly hostile relations with its neighboring countries, although development of the port at Gdynia will allow for easier access to the Baltic Sea and to trade with France and Great Britain. Internal unease and natural disasters have hampered efforts to economic recovery.
Exports/Imports: Poland currently exports mostly raw materials such as coal and steel, as well as agricultural products. Poland imports a lot of its food due to uneven development of its agriculture prior to independence.
Trading partners: Germany, Czechoslovakia, Latvia, Romania, Russia

Military description: The Polish Army is quite large with a standing army of 283,000 men and a further 700,000 in the reserves. It is a very well trained military force with an officer's cadre that maintains constant refreshment and renewal of ideas. However technologically the Polish Army lacks in size compared with its neighbours, although the government is beginning to rectify the imbalance by 1936. The Air Force can field around 400 reasonably modern aircraft. The Navy is small and equipped with a few destroyers, three submarines and a number of smaller craft.
Military size: 283,000 standing, 700,000 reserves
Military equipment:
Rifles:
Gewehr 98 7.92mm rifle
Kb wz. 98a 7.92mm rifle
Karabinek wz. 1929 7.5mm rifle
Karabinek wz. 91/98/23 7.92mm carbine

Machine Guns
Ckm wz. 30 8mm heavy machine gun
Ckm wz. 25 Hotchkiss 7.92mm heavy machine gun
Browning wz. 1928 7.92mm automatic rifle

Just getting Poland before someone else does.

History (if different): TBA, something about a Polish-Russian war in 1921, Poland loses most of its eastern territories and Marshal Józef Piłsudski becomes dictator 4 lyfe (or until 1935).

Sanabel wrote:I change my reservation to Russia, with Manchuria, the Caucuses, Belarus, Ukraine, the Baltics, and the Stans.

So...does Poland still have its territories that are now part of Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine?
