Let's be real, though. They were using firearms that did not exceed that of a fifty cal, so RPGs were the only option. That and IIRC the F-4s got it with some AIM-9s. I'm sure 30mm DU rounds can wreck dragon scales if it can wreck tanks.

In an ideal situation. Shoot the wings to prevent if from escaping, though considering the size of fully grown dragons and the fact the anime stated that the military's aa was barely able to bring down young wind dragons(which are weaker and more fragile) One can assume that an adult fire dragon would be rather bullet proof. And by that I mean even with the GAU you'd need to hit some pretty small targets. Just food for thought though. Ordnance might. BE the way the way to go for dragons imho.

Not to mention those three spots had to hit some VERY specific targets.

The plane is just the accessory. If it fires too long, it'll literally stall the aircraft out by sheer force of recoil.

Just like for the AC-130's engines were made to tolerate the 105 as much as it could, which explains the long periods of not firing it as the whole aircraft recovers from being suddenly skidded in the air.

The A-10 actually can't penetrate any modern tank armor from any or most angles. In the show, a JSDF F-4 destroys the dragon with AIM-9s. That said, the A-10 can definitely penetrate dragon scales with a few bursts, an AGM-65D, or a JDAM.

But honestly, we'd probably end up hitting it low with a few JDAM bombs dropped from a B-1B really high up.

I hate to be the guy, and we can argue which special units are better than who's all we want(Since I at least find it fun) but pound for pound, the empire has a massive disadvantage in their basic foot troops and medicine.
