Character State of Origin: Washington
Character Affiliation: Republican
Main Strengths: Confident, well-spoken, persuasive, charming
Main Weaknesses: Can be angered, can be aggressive, unloyal, indecisive
Short Bio: Born in Redmond, Washington to a middle class family of six, he lived with his two parents, two sisters and one brother. Derek was raised by a predominately American-Chinese family, his mother having immigrated from mainland China and his father an accountant living in the States. In school he had always stood out academically due to his motivation and eagerness to pass others by, and in most cases he did throughout his early years. In elementary, middle and high-school he found little difficulty in getting through his exams and other such tests with relative ease, there were classes that he was naturally just bad at like cooking and drama but those could be ignored. When looking back at his past, one could perhaps even say that Derek had never had a motivation towards politics, he hadn't been in the debate club or any such thing yet he had been greatly interested in Modern Studies. Learning about the world and how it worked, how society operated. And this was what steered him into his political career.
He attended the University of Washington and had been surprised to find other people who equalled him in study and academics. It had only motivated him further however to beat them, getting a degree in Politics and English primarily. After his time in university and being in-between jobs, Derek had served 3 years in the Washington National Guard to put more onto his résumé and to gain more experience and skills in practical work. Along with earning his own money on the side, after his time in the Guard he had been jumpstarted into state politics by one of his fathers' friends in the company he worked for. Who had various connections, getting the eager still relatively young man into his first political race only two years after introducing him into the political scene in Washington. The race for Washington's 7th Congressional District, and despite being a Republican deep in Democratic territory, he had somehow won in the first race in around 30 years for a Republican of that district. Beginning his service in Congress, another 10 years later and he was House Majority Leader for the Republicans. Having worked his way up to the top in a mostly respectable manner.
Other Info: Derek in the past has usually recieved donations from a Washington based aerospace defense company named Wellings Defense Solutions that has been the target of controversy in the sights of the media in recent years due to its weapons falling into the hands of shady mercenary groups employed by the government in Iraq and similar areas around the world, causing Mallens to distance himself from the company. Now attempting to find other large sources of income. He currently is married to Alyssa Mallens and has one 14 year old daughter, Lucy Mallens. He currently lives in Washington D.C.

I anticipate a solid win in Nebraska, what with being governor and such. Time to hit Oregon and California hard.

Primarily a result of the semi-closed primary system, in which the voters tend to be longtime Libertarians, and more likely to know someone like Longwood, someone who has been a major party figure, first Libertarian Governor, and letting him score higher than in open-primary states like Missouri.
