History (Optional): With a deep economic crisis and acts of terrorism striking fear into the populace, France was highly polarized going into 2017. Both the farther left and right found their support surging with the Left Front and National Front gaining many seats in parliamentary elections at the expense of more centrist parties. In the Presidential election, Socialist Martine Aubry narrowly won against Republican Nicolas Sarkozy on a promise to "reorient" the French economy. A model which bears much similarity to Nordic social corporatism was put into place which has gradually eased economic woes and labour tensions, although this remains highly fragile. Efforts towards deradicalization including social programs, education, and enhanced screening were moderately successful yet small scale attacks continue. Although progress has been made, much of the populace demands more action and so the far right and far left continue to grow.
