A Mass Effect Character RP
Context
In the year 2183, the galactic community almost fell prey to an attack by an army of synthetics known as the Geth. Lead by the rogue Spectre Saren, the Geth attempted to seize control of the Citadel in order to herald the violent return of the Reapers; enormous machines that eradicate all organic civilization every fifty thousand years. In the months that followed, the Citadel Council has been trying to quell the disorder that was caused by Saren's failed bid to bring back the ancient beings.
For the galaxy at large, the threat was defeated.
For the few trusted with the truth, the danger is still out there.
The world of Mass Effect is a future in which the sentient races of the galaxy have, for the most part, being able to coexist. For many it is presented as a utopia, a symbol of a better future. For others, the truth is a much harder pill to swallow. The wars are as violent as any in human history, the tyrants as infamous.
Through the use of element zero, spacecraft are capable of FTL flight, guns are able to hurl rounds downrange faster than ever conceived, body armour effectively shields against modern weaponry and certain individuals are capable of harnessing near magical powers.
Lieutenant Commander Shepard, Alliance marine and Council Spectre, revealed the existence of the Reapers and was instrumental in the defeat of Saren and the Geth. Now tasked with investigating ways in which to truly defeat the threat posed by the Reapers, Shepard and the crew of the Normandy are going to travel beyond the boundaries of Council space, beyond the authority of an Alliance marine or a Spectre. In search of the hidden treasures of the Protheans and the races who preceded them, Shepard and his crew will come face-to-face with dark secrets even their foe cannot possibly contemplate.
However, Shepard is not the one searching for answers. Nor is he the only human.
Setting
This is a "reimagining" of the Mass Effect universe (and more specifically of the story of Commander Shepard) which follows on from the ending of the first game. The Reapers, despite being trapped in deep space by Prothean science and stranded due to the destruction of Sovereign, still remain a threat to galactic civilisation. The victory over Saren was temporary, whether that is a few years or a few centuries. However now the galaxy has a chance to learn of the danger, to uncover ways of achieving victory, before the Reapers arrive.
The Geth, a race of synthetics infamous for the near genocide of the quarians and more recently for their attack into Council space, remain an ever-present threat to the organic civilisations of the galaxy. In an act unforeseen by many observers, they have begun fortifying the worlds they control, enacting great feats of engineering as they regroup in the face of their defeat. While the eyes of the Council remains fixated on the war-torn edges of Alliance space, the synthetics have sent out fleets into the uncharted systems of the galaxy, frantically searching for something. Whether it is the same knowledge that the Normandy seeks, no one yet knows. And ignorance is something that brought victory to the Reapers for thousands of years.
Having control of a network of informants has always been a lucrative business. Great power is bestowed into secrets, and yet left for anyone to steal. To be a broker of such knowledge is to be both almighty and vulnerable at the same time. However, sometimes even paranoia can generate successful strategies.
Understanding that a small investment could successfully provide dividends in the future, the Shadow Broker has put together a crew of his own to delve into the unknown in search of whatever knowledge can be gleamed from the ancient troves of the Protheans. Assembled from across the breadth of the galaxy, the Broker's team is intended to comprise entirely of specialists, capable of adapting to any enviroment or situation. Given the dangers possed by the Geth, success or failure of the galaxy could depend on the Broker's mercenaries, if Shepard were to die alone and forgotten in the darkness of space.
Gameplay
Players will control crewmembers onboard the Azure Pride, a retrofitted civilian ship filled with stolen technologies from the Citadel races. The GM will have only limited involvement in the actions of the PCs, and only when correcting god-modding or progressing the plot. The result of certain actions, based on difficulty or potential alternative outcomes (did the shot hit a fuel line, for example) will be decided via a roll, representing the chaos and unpredictable nature of the universe.
The actions, choices and decisions made by the PCs, whether indirectly or directly, will have consequences in both the immediate plot, but also latter arcs. Some NPCs will become hostile where at first they would be friendly, areas will unlock and entire story threads will be drastically altered depending on the decisions made by the characters.
Application
The character species can include: humans, asari, turians, salarians, drell, krogan, quarians, and batarians.
For the character's class, the ME3 multiplayer classes should be considered the options. This is for simplicity in working out powers. As such, this is a useful site: http://narida.chypsylon.eu/#Soldier/Hum ... AL2AO2////
