Her parents both lack magical ability but her grandmother Suyin is a witch and was delighted when her granddaughter showed signs of her ability. She was trained in the magic arts almost as soon as she was old enough to understand, along with her siblings who were all magical as well. Like all her siblings she was also taught to fly a broom before she could walk, but went to a Norm school before she turned the age where they needed to find a magic school for her.

Her grandmother wanted to send her to Kunlun, the Wizarding school in Beijing but her parents wanted her to go to another school, that way she'd be more well rounded. They finally decided to let Tianyi pick and she chose Iunctus. Of course with it being so far away they protested but she heard it was the best and wanted to learn from the best. She was sent there when she was of age, she had family in San Francisco that she'd be staying with during term. When she first arrived she was home sick and nervous, and her English-speaking still needed work. However she adjusted quite well and even made the flying team and dueling club.
