Calamity visibly flinched at the name and the Cannister let out a pitched whine. Calamity looked around as the name of the force behind the King in Yellow was uttered. It was as though she was expecting something terrible to take place and the Northern Mage could guess she had had some experience or at least knowledge of what that name entailed.

"Careful with those kinds of words human," NUMB said.

"Yes. To answer your question, there is a vacant laboratory downstairs. It used to belong to Hyerophant, but he has adopted a...unique new role in the organization so that he won't be using it. It should be mostly empty feel free to experiment there. Otherwise, I do believe that NUMB has a very particular site to show you. Something that all of the new recruits get to see."

"Yes, I do. Please Mage, come over and carry my canister for the Ghostwalk."

As the Mage complied and picked up the canister for the teleportation, he would find it surprising light and airy given its rugged frame. As soon as he did so there was, a tugging sensation which radiated through both there beings and the two individuals were spirited away through the Ghostwalk.

The Mages familiarity with the arcane made the experience somewhat informative. As NUMB and the Mage were made transubstantial, the smell of bioelectrical-ectoplasm reached them, and a faint aetheric howling could be heard. The process was strangely spiritual, and the Mage could tell magic was involved in some minuscule part of the process or perhaps it was merely some sort of hyper-advanced science masquerading as such. No sooner had the two entities been turned into ghosts then they had been hurled by some great force towards their destination. Colors blurred and raced past and when they finally slowed down to reach their destination they were material and physical again.

They were standing on a hillock overlooking what was clearly once a forest. Now there was only desolation and ruin. A black trail of soot and ash covered a massive canyon like a wound that stretched towards the horizon. Calling it a canyon though didn't do it justice. It was a gash, a massive chunk of the earth which had been cleanly removed from the face of the planet. The wound was in a half circle shape with the hill the two Knights were on being the halfway point of the flat side. Although give how far the devastation covered it was nearly impossible to tell. The wound descended almost a thousand meters into the ground with completely regular sides that were sloped like a quadrant of a circle.

Most people would have been given quite the sensory shock from teleportation, but then again, Justin didn't have any internal organs or fluids. As such he was saved from the rather crappy situation of vomiting. More so that he had more time to survey the scene. The Canadian born man simply hummed as he gazed upon the destruction. Had this been Earth than no doubt he would've heard of such a destructive event. But as it stood, he had no doubt that said teleportation was a little something... more. Had he still had a face he would've raised his brow in curiousity, "I take it we aren't necessarily in Kansas anymore, are we Toto?"

“I have never been to Kansas,” NUMB said dryly. “We are however in Pennsylvania. This is the area known officially as Sproul State Forest. It is known more commonly by its nickname. Archons Playground.”

NUMB let that hang in the air as the cold ashen wind washed over the pair of them. Nothing moved in what had once been a bustling forest of life and beauty. Now just a black and grey ruin of dust and burned out wood. It was hard to look upon the sight and not think of some sort of acid rain massive enough to rival the Biblical Deluge. But there were also elements of it that looked like still photos of Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

“Once, several years ago, Archon came across a group of C-Cell empowered terrorists. It was a real bloodbath, they had already killed the entire 69th Infantry Regiment and things were only going to get worse. Archon flew them here, a place as deserted as he could find. And then he dealt with them.”

“I show you this because it represents a few important lessons. We will also strive to move the conflict away from the city if possible. If I get the opportunity I will try and teleport our targets here so we can fight them without endangering human lives. It also acts a reminder, Archon, Nevermore and Ultrawoman may not be here, but they should never be out of our thoughts and when they return we would do well to respect them. I am confident a similar fate would await any of us if we didn't respect the Triptychs wishes.”

Andrew Marks

I didn't mean to kill him. Andrew Marks told himself as he left the air port, arriving in the city of New York from his home country of Australia. The big boa constrictor on his back, Rango looked around, acting as his eyes in aid to his blindness as they were guided by DARPA officials to the Knights Headquarters. It was only recently that he got caught in a deadly fight between the knights and a group of villians. He couldn't help but join the fight, taking on one of the villians causing trouble. It was all just for fun; the thrill of the fight and the desire to help the good guys out, but then got caught up too much into it and reacted to a near-lethal attack by biting his opponent with his fangs. The young serpentine man didn't know that his venom was so deadly that the victim didn't make it to the hospital. The Knights told him that he did the right thing, but part of Andrew just felt terrible about it. There had to have been anorher way to take him down. the aussie thought, There could have been another way... but I didn't look for it.

Andrew shook his head, clearing his thoughts as they got close to the HQ. What was done is done and both he and Rango bitterly knew that nothing could change otherwise. Rango looked around, seeing all the tall buildings of Manhattan. "Ssso what's gonna be going on guysss in this new life of mine?" he asked in a hissing, graspy and thick Australian accent, "Am I gonna be givin a home with a roof or am I just gonna be moved from one back alley begging and scrapping for food to another once I'm done at this headquarters of yours?"

Maxwell had been patrolling around China Town when he heard the screams. He'd said it was pointless, walking around there. What would happen there? No metas, he thought, no large crimes. But there they were, screams you heard when someone was dying. His feet slid across the pavement as he sprinted towards the location he'd heard the noise. He didn't exactly expect a meta at all, in fact, he thought it would just be a simple killer or something.

He paused at the edge of the storefront, eyeing up the frozen windows. That was odd, it wasn't anywhere near cold enough for this place to be frozen.. And furthermore, the rest of the street was normal. He walked in, unarmed of course. If he really needed to fight, which he expected, he would transform. He immediately felt the chill, then he spotted her. She was definitely a meta. And one that wouldn't go down easy. "Hey!" He shouted, still looming in the doorway.

Winter Witch left the last family member frozen solid upstairs before descending back down to exit the store. When she hit the last stair she heard the sound of the door open and a voice echo throughout the first floor.

"Hey!"

She looked him over and decided he was very young. Maybe only 18 or 19. By having the chutzpah to walk in here and announce himself like that he was probably some hero in the infant stages of his career looking to prove himself. She summoned a waist high wall off ice while advancing towards the door and slammed it into the mysterious hero to move him from the door frame, "Get out of here, I've already killed enough kids today".

Max's eyes widened as the ice knocked him over. So she was definitely a meta who could do ice magic? A little cold couldn't hurt him, after all, he was from Wisconsin. He got to his feet, deciding he was going to shift right away, hoping she would underestimate him. "I'm not a kid, lady," he said. He ran towards her, shifting into his werewolf form as he dived towards her.

It was a quick transformation, since he'd gotten used to it so long ago. His clothes were normal casual attire, as he didn't expect to fight, so now they were tattered and completely ruined, still wearable in his human form, though. He grabbed onto her once it was complete, throwing her across the room into some racks. She'd definitely be able to recover from it, and she'd definitely be pissed off. Luckily for him, he would become equally as pissed. Max stood, staring at her with a hungry look, ready for any icicle she'd throw at him.

Petra crashed into the store shelves behind her hard enough to send opened cans of herbs and spices flying around the room. The hit was harder than she expected, but not enough to cause any kind of damage. On a whole other level of pissed off now she raised her head up and gritted her teeth. The kid had transformed into some kind of wolf, so she responded by raising an ice spire out of the ground to catch his underside and shoot him into the air, coupled with a cluster shot of razor sharp ice blade slung from above to smash him back into the ground.

Max was caught off guard now, he'd been expecting a more obvious attack. He was flung into the air, but before he could try to do anything, he was flung back down. Luckily for him, he wasn't harmed, only annoyed and slightly disoriented. He got up, fixing her with a murderous glare. He began growling, preparing to lunge at her again. He didn't know her weaknesses and she didn't know his, they were definitely even unless one of them guessed. Heat was the obvious choice for him, he figured it could do something because it was the exact opposite of ice. But he couldn't just make a fire out of thin air, and he didn't have backup. Attacking head on would be the best choice of action. He lowered himself into a pouncing position, then quickly sprang towards her.

The man who had driven in the limo with him from the airport had been quiet up until this point.

"No, you won't be let back on your own. You can't think of yourself as an individual anymore. You're too unique. This facility, the Knights Fortress, will be your home for the foreseeable future."

The man was a lean figure with an aquiline face and piercing eyes. He treated Andrew in a very casual manner, the way that showed he had been living and working around Metahumans his entire life. Even the Australian's odd appearance and the vaguely reptilian smell didn't seem to phase him in the slightest.

The doors opened as they arrived at the Knights fortress. It was a squat metal warehouse that was covered in pieces of reinforced steel and concrete. With the appearance of a nuclear bunker or military complex right in the middle of Queens, it perfectly encapsulated the mood of the Knights.

The man in the suit got out and motioned Snake Charmer to follow him as they approached the compound. It was surrounded by a wall of concrete nearly a foot thick with a series of brutal looking machine gun turrets peeking up at regular intervals. If it had been in some less advanced part of the world, it could have mistaken for the Korean DMZ or the Israeli Green Line.

The suited man approached the wall casually even as the gun swiveled to lock onto him. However, no sooner had they point their barrels at him they began to turn away and aim at Snake Charmer. They remained quiet but always menacing.

In front of the doors waited for the middle-aged and armored form of Calamity Rose. She extended a way to the suited man with an incredible amount of respect before extending her hand again to Snake Charmer.

“Good to see you again Adam. How have things been.”

“Boring. Clean up crew suited you better than me. This is Snake Charmer your other recruit. I would stay and watch his introduction but I don’t have time, and I really don’t care.”

With that, the man in the suit left quickly disappearing in his car leaving Andrew and Calamity together.

Octavian lunged forward and ravenously bit at Winter Witch who barely kept herself out of his jaws for long enough to land a few bone shattering punches. After four punches which would have knocked out most humans Octavian finally sunk his gleaming sharp teeth into her arm and shook his head back and forth. Winter Witch let out a grunt of pain while summoning a thick coating of ice to her hand and delivering a final blow with all of her strength. At last Octavian let go and quickly regained his footing to pounce again. Petra clamped her fist shut as a slim stream of blue blood leaked onto the floor then jumped forward with murderous rage. She shot a stream of small ice crystals into his eyes to distract him long enough to get close. Using her one opportunity Winter Witch summoned a icicle about the size of a short sword and sprinted past him cramming the blade as far into his rib-cage as it would go. Petra stopped running just short of the car to see if her attacker was going to pursue her. When he didn't appear in the doorway ready to contiune the fight she slammed the door open and shut and cursed at her driver "Home. Now."

Andrew Marks

"Ah... I sssseee." hissed Andrew, tilting his head as his boa constrictor, Rango, turned towards the driver. He understood that he was unique, but the thought of that alone being a reason to rescue him from life as a beggar to be a little odd. "Ssseeeems like a nice change of pace for once. What do you think Rango?"

Rango looked at his owner and hissed to him in a way which Andrew perfectly understood. Andrew chuckled and stroked the boa constrictor's chin. "Yep. No more sssstealing, no more begging and no more digging through trash for food." he spoke coolly to his snake, "Nice warm bed and good food for both of usss."

Andrew chuckled before sighing as he remembered once again what actually got into this position. In regret, the serpentine Australian shook away these thoughts as they arrived at the Knights Fortress. Rango looked at the building curiously as Adam helped Andrew out of the limousine and escorted him into the Knight's Fortress.

Andrew blinked as Rango looked at the turrets ane he gulped a little. "Pretty sssecure I guesss." he spoke calmly, yet nervously, "Ssseems like a bad place to break into..."

Andrew then stopped as they approached the entrance, his glazed green eyes staring at nothingness while his snake Rango sprawled on his shoulders, stared directly at Calamity. The serpentine kid and boa constrictor listened to Adam and woman speak and Rango watched as the former left before returning full attention to Calamity.

"So, I guesss your the bosss here." spoke Andrew in his hissing and graspy voice, gesturing to his boa constrictor, "My name's Andrew Marksss and my seeing-eye snake's name is Rango. What'sss this name Sssanke Charmer? Iss that gonna be my nickname that all heros and villians seem to have? What exactly am I going to be doing here?"

Maxwell got to his feet shakily, shifting back into his human form. The lady was too far away now for him to chase, plus that ice blade would definitely leave a mark. He readjusted his now shredded clothes and paced over to the one piece of equipment he had, a mobile phone. It was one of the older, less expensive kinds. The only number on it was that of the NYMD, whom he would be calling very soon. With a couple more stretches, he leaned against a cluttered counter, dialing the number.

"Hey, this is Max. Just ran into a meta, she had some kind of ice magic and froze a bunch of people. If you get this, just use my uh.. GPS thing that's been stuck under my skin since forever." He closed the flip phone, heaving a sigh. He'd just have to wait there for whoever wanted to show up.

Calamity’s gloved hands had an unnatural feeling associated with them. A kind of sucking pain that radiated ever so slightly from her entire body. To Andrews reptilian senses she reeked not only of death but a cancerous ravenous death that would suck the life from the bones. She was not a healthy and sane sort of human if she even was one.

“Yes, while you’re here you can consider me your de facto boss. I’m the New York Knights field leader, Calamity Rose, and i’m in charge of organizing us in the field and coordinating our operations. You will meet NUMB soon as well; he’s in charge of logistics and all the bureaucratic logistics. Both of us are elder members of the Knight of America, so we know the in’s and out’s of this job quite well.”

Calamity motioned for Andrew to follow her as she walked through the metal gate towards the compound itself. The concrete walls around the building divided the street from the dirt courtyard which circled the warehouse itself. This courtyard was covered in the telltale signs of combat and strange powers.

“Snake Charmer has been assigned to you as your alias. We all have one, NUMB, Calamity, Northern Mage, Burning Eye, Thunderbird. Yours was tested with a focus group of criminals and civilians. We use them not only to mask our identity but also to make us appear more inhumane. It makes the regular folks feel safer to be protected by something vastly stronger than them, and it scares the criminals that much more.”

Calamity opens a door on the side of the warehouse showing the Serpent person inside to the large control center covered in strange looking electronic devices and scientific equipment.

“Here you will be learning how to be an effective meta-vigilante and accompany us on missions to deal with meta-terrorists. You will be responsible for frequent patrols throughout the city to look for criminals and boost civilian morale.”

Andrew Marks

Andrew Mark's forked prehensile tongue flickered out of his reptilian mouth. He frowned deeply as he could clearly smell and taste the stench of death and decay from the elder woman Calamity. No doubt this person was no more human than he was. "Okay Bosss. Ssso you got some sort of decaying powers or something?" he asked as he began following her, "I have heard and 'seen', of all kinds of powers and you seem to have the most... creepy from what I could smell. Anyway, I guess I'm looking forward to meeting this NUMB guy."

Rango looked around as they walked. Seeing through the snake's eyes, the strange battle marks left behind by metahumans like himself sent a shiver up his spine, recalling many battles he have gotten into with metas who lived on the streets of Sydney like him as well.

Andrew then smiled as Calamity explained his alias. "Ah... I get it. Okay makess sense." he spoke coolly, "Snake Eyes sounds like a cooller name, but ether one could do as both represent what can do. Actually never heard of rule of not being allowed to have two nicknames. Both could scare the shit out of numbskull criminals I guess."

Rango looked around curiously as they entered the strange room full of strange computers and electronics. "Looks like some cool sci-fi stuff you got here, boss." Andrew spoke in his laid-back voice, "Bet they can do all kinds of things."

Andrew then tilted his head as Calamity explained what his life is going to be about for now on. He gulped at the idea of having do deal with meta-terrorists, both out fear for himself and the possibility of having to kill again. However, he asumed from what he saw through Rango's eyes, that he would be given enough training for such kind of things. "Patroling the city for numbskull criminals, huh?" he replied, "Sounss cool. Could do that with a whole bunch of snakes slithering around acting as my eyes and ears. How many snakes you think live in this city anyway?"

“I am possessed by one of the most lethal cosmic forces we have discovered so far. A sentient color to leeches life and vitality from anything it can find. In order to keep it stated our government feeds its death row inmates on a regular basis,” she explained. Leading Andrew down a set of metal stairs into large series of hallways and stairs.

It became quickly apparent that beneath the entire structure was a network of basements and sub-basements which appeared to descend ten levels downward. On the second of these lower levels, Calamity brought him to a room that actually looked pleasant compared to the steel and concrete ones elsewhere. It was a sizeable room with a bed, television, bathroom, desk, table, chairs and other amenities. It was well decorated and besides the lack of a window very pleasant, if sterile.

“If you think I'm creepy then you’ll find NUMB downright terrifying. But it’s nothing you need to worry about. We are both here to help you, and in turn, you're going to help us. And when it’s all over you’ll be an American hero. This is your room. You are allowed anywhere in the structure except for the 15th level. None of us are allowed down there.”

“Oh and one more thing. What do you know about the Triptych? Mainly Nevermore?”

Justin would've blinked if he still had eye lids, "I'll admit, I find it a bit odd that I never heard of this. Especially this close to the border." He looked around, it looked as if a bad experiment with alchemy had been displayed in massive amounts... Or someone was banging rods of plutonium together. Neither gave good feelings, a single being was capable of this, and that was a bit terrifying.

So he posed a question, one that likely plagued other Meta-Groups from time to time, "What happens if they lose control? Are there any contingencies to stop them? If they lose their minds, or have their free will wrenched away?"

NUMB was quite for a long time before replying allowing the cold and hard wind to continue battering them.

“I don’t like to think about it,” he said “If they did lose their rationality we would probably just have to submit to them. I don’t think there would be a real way to deal with Archon without destroying the planet. The others could probably be beaten, but I won’t want to be on the same continent when it happened. No has made any contingencies recently, not since the last time. Let’s just say a particular country had to have re-elections of their entire government after the Triptych found out they were considering a contingency plan.”

There was a slight humming as the air around them began to shimmer and a quick Ghostwalk later they were back in the Knights fortress. The cold dark warehouse was occupied by Calamity and the second recruit Andrew.

“It honestly isn’t something to worry too much about. It’s better to be on their side than against them; that’s part of why we made the Knights in the first place. So that people would feel like they’re on the winning side. You do want to be on the winning side don’t you Mage?”

“It’s good to see you too again,” Calamity said as the Mage arrived carrying the canister that was NUMB.

“This is Andrew Mark, Snake Eye. Andrew the armor is the Northern Mage, Justin Stoker and the Canister is NUMB.”

Justin found such levels of defeatism... troubling. These were the people charged with safeguarding the entire population of the US. If they came upon such an adversary that it would be difficult to defeat would they simply give up? They didn't with the incident a few months ago in Colorado, but from what Justin heard they had outside help with that, were they just keeping up appearances at such a point? he replied to NUMB's last question, "If it means the possible death and subversion of millions of innocents, not really."

Justin nodded towards Andrew, "A pleasure to meet you. I'm a bit glad to see I'm not the only new arrival."

The Ex-Ranger sighed, pulled the silenced Vector from it's holster, and plugged the retreating guard in the back of the head with an analgesic wax round, his body promptly and limply dropping like a wet bag of cement. Shaking his head he holstered his sidearm, "People need to beat their fucking kids."

Chrono simply nodded slowly, "Well at least he won't be a problem. Come on, we still have a job to do."

Atlas still didn't really call it a job. Jobs were usually difficult, this involved pointing a gun at a guard and waiting until they either pissed themselves and submitted, or said something vulgar and were given mild brain damage. Until they entered the basement, where all the load bearing beams sat weakest. That's when Atlas clicked in to what was happening. Bodies, all headless, all wearing Reich Industries ID. This was both corporate sabotage and being a whistle blower.

"This was never about blowing shit up. Was it?"

Chrono shook her head as her helmet started flashing... pictures most likely. "No, I expected shady things from here after I read some reports of the smell of dead bodies by some of the people who transit through the area. The most damning of which was a Holocaust survivor recognizing the smell."

Atlas nodded, "Sometimes they are the best generation." He looked around, how the hell they'd manage to hide so many bodies was beyond him. A flash was directed at him, he turned towards Chrono.

She responded with nigh telepathic speed, "Getting you in the shot cements their credibility. Let's get out of here, getting caught would be a tragedy." she started out of the facilities basement, as did Atlas. The giant noticed that she was snapping shots of other identifier markings like the logos on the shipping containers, the uniforms of the guards, the RI sign on the warehouse. And then they stopped once they got back in the car.

As they drove away Atlas paused, "So what's next on the agenda?"

Chrono replied, "We visit the Knights, ask them if they were the ones who attacked my employer some time ago."

Atlas sighed, what was this, the third time he visited the Knight's Brooklyn fortress? "Guess I could say hi. Ask how some of them are doing."

Andrew Marks

Andrew gulped and shivered when he heard Calamity's explanation of her frightening powers. The idea of such a creature like the one that the older woman was possessed by sent a chill down his spine and he didn't like it one bit. So it's actually worse than I though. Andrew thought to himself, not really beginning to like his new boss very much, or the American Government. He stroked his snake who's feelings he could telepathically tell were mutual towards Calamity. What on earth have we gotten ourselves into?

Andrew nonetheless followed Calamity through the seemingly endless halls and staircases, throughout the fortress, deciding to keep his thoughts to himself. When they arrived at the room that would be his living quarters for now on, Andrew/Rango looked around and smiled broadly, slightly baring his fangs. "Wow. Thankssss, Bosss." hissed the Australian cheerfully, finding the the room to be much nicer than what he has seen throughout the fortress so far, "Me and Rango will get use to this quite nicely."

Andrew then frowned slighty when Calamity spoke of NUMB. Due to how terrifying Calamity described her own powers, the young snake man shivered at the thought of how NUMB could be any worse. "Okay, I guesss, boss." hissed Andrew calmly, shaking his thoughts away and putting them to rest for the time being as he decided to trust Calamity's words that she really wanted to help him, "Think I could be considered an Aussstralian Hero, too? Always got to keep the good old Down Under that was my home in mind, too."

Andrew then tilted his head at Calamity's question. "Triptych? Nevermore?" he asked curiously, the tone of his voice showing how obviously unknown it was to him, "Never heard of sssuch a thing in my life. What is Triptych? Another super or something?"

Andrew's snake Rango then turned towards the exit of his room upon hearing two new presences, a suit of armor and a strange canister. The blind serpentine Australian gasped slightly upon hearing Calamity introduce them and nodded as Rango looked directly at the two newcomers. "H-hello, Mage and NUMB." he greeted coolly, trying not to get creeped out by the canister, "I'm Andrew as you already know. This is Rango, my ssseeing-eye snake. I guess I'll be working along side you guys to fight crime. ...Ssso what are your stories exactly?"

“Sorry Andrew,” Calamity said “I have nothing against Australia's they’re fine people, but it looks better for everyone if our team appears American. We will put on a fast track for dual citizenship so you can expect to be getting a new passport soon.”

“The Triptych is a name given to three of the founding members of the Knights. Widely and rightly consider our most powerful members. Archon, Ultrawoman, and Nevermore. Each of them were some of the most powerful Meta-humans the world has seen easily able to achieve impossible feats. Now this next fact is a carefully guarded secret and does not leave this room; you are not allowed to reveal it to anyone or even speak about it too loudly.”

Calamity inhaled before explaining. “We have no idea where any of the Triptych are. Each of them vanished mysteriously and hasn’t been heard from since April 30, 2015. Archon mentioned something about an entity in space he needed to deal with; Ultrawoman went on a science trip in the Pacific and Nevermore just plain dropped off the face of the earth. This is a serious issue; it is the equivalent of the US losing all of its nukes with no idea where they went. You can imagine what such information could do if revealed to the wrong people. As it stands we have created an illusion that they are each fighting a secret enemy somewhere else and that at any moment we could contact them and bring them back. In truth, we cannot.”

“But we are praying and desperately searching for them to come back. Which is why I brought up Nevermore specifically, because if he does return Andrew he will probably try and kill you. You see Nevermore had a particular vendetta against a group known as the Annunaki. Am I pronouncing that right?”

“Well enough,” NUMB replied. “You don’t have the forked tongue to do it justice. The Annunaki are a race of shapeshifting reptilian humanoids. One of the reasons we recruited you, Andrew, because of your similarity to them. You bear a remarkable likeness to the one we have seen before but are clearly of a different species altogether which won’t be noticeable unless a though genetic test is done. This is wonderful because we believe that the New York City Mayor has been replaced by or has always been an Annunaki. If so we want you to trick them into thinking you are a mole in our organization so you can instead become a mole in there’s.”

New York City
NYC City Hall
The Scarlet Baroness

Entering the City Hall was fairly easy. With her wings hidden and a spell cast around her to make people kind of overlook her she got in without any real trouble. And even if someone noticed her, then it would´ve been because of her pretty...unusual clothing. And with things like cosplayers becoming more popular in the world, even this was nothing to really question her for anything. Besides, she was free to wear whatever she wanted as long as it was morally decent. In the entrance hall she took a quick look at a map of the building`s layout before taking the way to the Bureau of Land Management.

While wandering the corridors and staircases of the City Hall, Antonia remembered the war for Independence. A dissatisfied look came on her face. Like most old vampires she had supported the British and had sent hessian mercenaries as well as fed the british troops with information about the rebels. And yet, it all didn`t help. And here she was now in the City Hall of one of the most important cities of that dreaded state born from the revolution. She had taken a look at some of the older files of the SS Abteilung für Paranormales to see what they were doing at that time and was...surprised to say the least. Apparently her Hessian Mercenaries weren`t all as hessian as she had thought they were. How could she have known that the Teutonic Order had infiltrated those units to defend the german lives from supernatural entities deployed by the rebels in the war?

Finally she stopped in front of a wooden door with a small placard on it, saying "New York City Bureau of Land Management". Opening the door reveiled a room filled with a few offices to her as well as some pretty boring government officials. With an innocent smile she stepped up to one of the office workers and asked him:

"Guter Herr, I would like to buy city property."

The civil servant, a middle aged man who had probably never done anything exciting in his whole life, looked up and, once he saw that there was nothing but thin air where he looked at, looked down at her. A little bit irritated he said:

"Uhm...sorry...uh...young lady but I don`t think that you`re allowed to...uh...buy property. Please return with your fa-, no, your parents next time."

Antonia kept her smile but her eyes, now locked on his, grew cold and unforgiving. It sure was a pain how nobody ever took her serious. Then again, it also had it`s advantages.

"I said, that I want to buy city property. Please hand me the appropriate documents for this purchase and state your prize."

The civil servant struggled a little more but simply couldn`t break away from her eyes. His face which had shown signs of terror was now becoming more emotionless and empty. A smile without any real feeling for it appeared on his face and he said absent mindedly:

"Yes, I`ll prepare all necessary documents. Please state what property you would like to acquire."

"That`s my boy. I`d love to buy the North and South Brother Islands for Reich Industries please. It is time that we get a good foothold in the US."

A wrinkle appeared on the civil servant's forehead. Before leaving to get the documents, he picked up a recorder and put it on the desk before her:

"I have been told to hand this over to anyone who wants to purchase the Islands. A memo is saved on it. Do with it as you please. I will need some time to prepare."

Then he left and Antonia was alone at his desk with the recorder. After eyeing it suspiciously for a few minutes, she decided to listen to the memo to see what this was all about.

As evening fell and Alice's shift ended she hurried to the location she had been given on her note - 60 Court St #2. Brooklyn, NY. She didn't change - she was somewhat suspicious of the way she had received the instructions she had been given so she stayed in police uniform, relying on the authority and (often dubious) protection that gave her.

As she approached she cast a furtive eye about, looking for anyone, or anything, that might seek to attack her when her guard was down, "Hello?" she called, unbuttoning the strap that secured her pistol in it's holster, letting one hand drift down to rest on the reassuring cool weight at her hip.

Above Alice, Octavian stood pacing along the rooftop. He had been scouting the area out for the past few hours, having been tipped off there may be some sort of crime going down there. The jewelry store was going to close within the hour, the time that any criminal would enjoy to rob a place. Octavian walked towards the edge of the building's roof, leaning over it. The streets were, for the most part, empty aside from Alice and the occasional passing car.

Octavian gave a short whistle, definitely audible to Alice. "Wasn't expecting you to stay in your uniform, Watcher." He called down, "Wanna fly up here, or would you rather just stand there?" He asked. He was guilty of having looked at some of the records and news reports there were about Alice. She certainly didn't try to keep a low profile before becoming a cop.

Alice jumped, she hadn't spotted Octavian, though her composure returned almost immediately. She flashed him a cheeky smile, "And I thought men liked a girl in uniform... Sorry to disappoint but I save the evening dresses for venues with a Michelin star."

"You mean you're not going to swoop down and pick me up?" she asked, with a raised eyebrow, "Hadn't you heard I retired?"

She glanced around, not seeing any obvious way to get up to where he was and, momentarily, her resolve not to use her powers cracked. It had been a long time and it had bee a lot of fun... she rose from the ground, hovering about it for half a second or so before shooting up to Octavian's level before setting down gently in front of him. It was a lot easier than she had expected, just like riding a bike, "I gather you're not trying to kill me and I don't get the impression this is a seduction attempt. So... why are we on the roof of a jewelry store?"

Octavian waited patiently while she did her thing. Judging by the last burst of speed, she wouldn't be someone he would enjoy being chased by. When she asked why they were there, he answered it right away. "I got a tip that some people were planning to rob the place." This was true, of course. Octavian had been sitting around in a bar earlier that week, and overheard the culprits planning it. "Being the kind person I am, I thought the cops could use a break. Well, other than you anyway." He chuckled lightly, looking back onto the now nearly abandoned road.

"The arrow was gone when I checked the alley. Got a DNA sample of me?" He asked her. His gloves definitely took care of that, he was confident that she couldn't find out who he was. "Y'know, if you're onboard with taking the robbers out with me, I could settle with telling the story that you took them all out. I don't necessarily care about fame." Soon after he said this, a couple of vans rolled up onto the street. Five men jumped out of each, six of them were armed with a pistol or knife, the biggest gun any of them had was an SMG. "What were they expecting, some kind of a fight? That's odd." He looked over at Alice, "So, what's it gonna be? Fight with me, or call for backup?"

"The arrow's in my desk. I haven't really had a chance to examine it yet... but I'm sure you'll tell me who you are in due course. Until then, why spoil the fun?"

She shook her head, raising an eyebrow at the comment about fame, "You don't 'necessarily' care about fame? What do you mean by 'necessarily'? Because I definitely do not want it."

She sighed as the van rolled up, disgorging the band of robbers, "The last thing I need is for Officer Dartwood to get in the news for a great act of valor. I'll be recognized and even if someone doesn't immediately connect the dots to 'Watcher', it only takes one intrepid reporter to look into my history and find the name change... but I do have a duty as a police officer to intervene here."

Alice held up a finger, "This is what I am going to do. In accordance with standard police procedure I am going to call for backup. Then I am going to walk through the front door and demand that they all surrender. I don't anticipate that they will, but people should always be given a choice. While I have them distracted you come in from the back. If thing's don't go according to plan then the police should be able to clean up whatever's left. I'll attribute everything to you and a second mystery, invisible meta-human." she paused before adding, "I don't kill and I don't work with people who do unless it is in self-defense. It is not our place to act as judge, jury or executioner."

She drew herself up onto the low wall around the rooftop, standing with her heels to the edge without any apparent fear of heights. It wasn't all that surprising for someone who could fly, "So, do you think you can work with me? If so, lets get started."
