This is an (alternate) historical rp set at the breakout of the second Schleswig war, a critical point in danish history and the spark that led to Prussias domination and eventual unification of the german states. The war has always fascinated me as it very much echoes what the world would learn 50 years later as the great war broke out.
Background info
For 800 years the King of Denmark ruled the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein on the peninsula of Jutland. As they danish kingdom lost norway in 1814 they were furthermore awarded the Duchy of Lauenburg on the Elbe river.1/3rd of denmarks population at this time was ethnically german and the duchies stood behind half of denmark economic power. In 1848 during the year of revolutions the people of the predominantly german duchy of Holstein rose up against the childless king Frederik VII who had chosen an heir for Denmark and the duchies who did not fit their inheritance laws. Prussia and the German Confederation entered into the war on the side of the rebels and won most battles in the beginning of the war. However with Swedish-Norwegian forces entering the war on the Danish side and Russia, Austria, France and Great Britain pledging their support for Denmark the Danish forces ended up defeating the prussians and rebels and the war ended in 1852 with denmark promising that the duchies would be treated equally.
Democracy was introduced in 1849 and the King died in 1863 leading to the ascension of the ethnically german King Christian IX. This was however very unpopular in Holstein which was a member of the German confederation. They disbanded the Danish constitution which also applied to them and sought to leave denmark. In fear of loosing the ethnically danish duchy of Schleswig the national-liberal danish government passed a new constitution making Schleswig a full part of the Danish Kingdom, even though this violated the peace treaty. Prussia and Austria threatened Denmark to take it back however Denmark refused, in the thought that the great powers would not allow the strengthening of the german nations. On the 1st of February 1864 Prussia and Austria declared war on Denmark.
Enough with the history lesson, whats in it for us?
The point of the RP is to try to see what would have happened if the great powers had intervened in 1864, if sweden had honoured its alliance with Denmark or any other historical scenario you can imagine, if the polish rebellion in Russia had spread or been succesful etc. And of course have some awesome 19th century warfare, politics and international conferences.
If this catches your eye (and i hope it does) i look forward to a wonderfully interesting rp.
Rules
1. You will mostly be locked in picking a nation from the map, a revolt, a foreign nation sending an expeditionary force or generals in an existing nations army. I will not create some giant german empire or communist republic for the Krautboos or soviets. The point of the rp is to have it take basis in real history and then diverge
2. No godmodding. I will not have people controlling other rp'ers armies, ignoring damage or heavily downplaying it, or controlling the reactions of armies you attack. Having a counter for some attacks is fine, but not even the best general will be prepared for everything.
3. Try to stay within period. If there is some uniform you desperately want but which is 30 years in the future i wont mind you using it, but i dont want to see people using machine-guns or dreadnoughts in the battle. If confused with what to use its fine to borrow some ideas from the american civil war.
4. Keep the armies small, at least in the start. The combined Prusso-Austrian army of the war never even reached 100.000 men so when the fighting is small scale i dont want to see 300.000 men steamrolling through Jutland. If more and more nations join the war on Denmarks or the Germans side it will however be fine to go to napoleonic numbers. This may be changed in the future
5. OOC is for OOC, IC is for IC. If you have anything OOC to discuss do it in this thread
6. Be creative. I know this is real life nations and people we are using, but still put your own spin on it. It makes this much more fun.
7. Plan ahead. An rp is not fun if everyone is just numberspamming everything. Plan with people on your side for the campaign, believe me its worth it.
8. The larger an army your nation has the less quality it will have
If you intend to pick a nation from the German Confederation this map will help you distinguish the names.
