RP Description:
The teachings of the prophesised Messiah, Jesus Christ, spread ever quickly through the known world. The death of a certain figure, who would have shaken the foundations of the Christian faith and homeland, has allowed it to expand into lands unknown. Four main strands now exist, the Chalcedonian doctrine, split between the Latin rites of the west and Greek rites of the East, Messalo-Coptism of the south, teaching that Christ was of conjoined nature, and that one can reach God through a state of perfection, and of Nestorianism of the far east, teaching that there is a distinction between Christ’s divine and human natures.
In the west, the former lands ruled by Rome have become divided between many kingdoms, each claiming the flame for themselves. The Pope struggles to exercises his divinely ordained power, as fellow Christians kill each other for material wealth and fleeting glory. In France, the various Frankish courts remain independent and bickering, while England has unified and set upon building itself an empire. To the north, Christianity has been embraced by the savage northmen.
To the east, the vast Kievan Rus’ expands further eastwards, and spreads its newly adopted Christian faith. The Byzantine Empire has collapsed into civil war, with four rival claimants eyeing the Imperial throne, while the Exarch of Africa and the Strategos of Cilicia remain neutral. Another claimant to Rome, Egypt, finds itself in a strong position, but checked by powerful opponents at every corner. The mighty Persian Empire struggles internally with Nestorians challenging its Zoroastrian leadership, and externally with the mighty Seljuq horde threatening it in the north, all the while it pushes into the fabled land of India.
All around nations war, for land, wealth or faith, arguing over the true teachings of the Messiah, or warring against his followers in their attempt to spread his message. The Millennium is upon us, the apocalypse comes, and the saviour will bring his wroth upon those who have sinned.
Events which happened
• Muhammad, founder of Islam, dies in childbirth, and without him the Arabs never surge out of the Arabian Peninsula. They remain divided in both religion and politics.
• The Euchites, a sect of Eastern Christianity, begin to coalesce in Alexandria, far from their origin in Syria. They reform their beliefs and acquire others from the Copts. Slowly they begin to convert officials in Byzantine Aegyptus. The death of St. Bessarion, a man responsible for a large scale conversion campaign in northern Aegyptus, saw the Messalian movement shift from a small heretical movement into a genuine competitor with the Chalcedonians.
• Charlemagne died in battle against a revolt, and was never able to conquer the Lombards or Saxons, or create the Holy Roman Empire.
• The Byzantine Empire has recently fractured, in 999, with the death of Basil during his wars against the Bulgars. The Emperor in Constantinople is challenged by three other contenders, one in Nicaea, in Athens, and in Trebizond. The Strategos of Cilicia and the Exarch of Africa remain neutral for now, not having pledged to any side.
• Without Islam, the Visigothic Kingdom of Hispania survived, though it has lost the western Suebic portions. Iberia is starting to show signs of change, into the more recognisable peoples today.
• The legendary sons of Seljuq converted to Zoroastrianism and have rallied the many tribes, Turkish, Tartar, and Altaic, into a mighty confederation which has conquered many Persian cities to the south.
• The province of Egypt broke away from the Byzantine Empire shortly after a disastrous set of wars between Byzantium and the Persians saw it become occupied by the Persians in 795. A rising Messalian elite, and the emergence of a new Coptic identity, saw it win independence from shaky Persian suzerainty in 798, and crown a new emperor, proclaiming Alexandria to be the ‘Third Rome’. Wars with Byzantium have generally ended in victory for Egypt, with most of the Levant coming under their control.
• A Danish invasion of England was defeated, and recent Anglo-Saxon kings have been energetic, taking the Lothian from a weakened Scotland, recently conquered by Norwegian and Danish nobles, and gaining suzerainty over southern welsh princes. It has very recently completed a conquest of Denmark, and the King of England was also heralded as the King of the Danes, and rules over both in a personal union.
