SURVIVORS - [OOC; Alien Survival RPG]

SURVIVORS
Part One: Black Swan
It's not the end of the world. Okay, it probably is.

BACKGROUND

The death of civilization began when the Morark landed on Earth. X-Day, they called it, although in hindsight, doomsday would have made more sense. We believed the Morark when they said that they were a wandering race of aliens who were looking for land to relocate their people too, because their homeworld was facing environmental troubles. When they offered us advanced technology that brought our knowledge of energy, weaponry, computing, and other fields forward by decades, we gladly accepted and in return gave them tracts of unused land to colonize. Their cities quickly grew in size and stature, and a symbiotic relationship began. We left them alone in their enclaves, and they sold us technology that improved the lives of millions. For months, the arrival of the Morark was viewed as the best thing to ever happen to humans, and anyone who treated them with suspicion was viewed as paranoid at best and xenophobic at worst.

But then, the August Surprise happened. Some say that a border skirmish between the California National Guard and the Morark colony in the middle of the state was what caused it. Others say that a foreign incident invoked the wrath of the aliens. And some think that it was completely unprovoked, and that the plan the entire time was to get humans to let their guard down before invading the planet. Millions worldwide died on that first day of the war, the Third of August. Los Angeles, London, Beijing, Paris, and Tokyo all became battlegrounds and were all hit by the full force of the Morark, who proved to be more advanced than we thought they were.

We did what we could to protect ourselves, but it was a worthless fight. By the second week of the human-Morark war, all of the major governments had collapsed, and anyone who hadn't been invaded yet was on the brink of collapsing because of the general anarchy that showed up after the war started. Once they'd broken everyone, they stopped.

They didn't enslave the planet, or kill everyone, or even take all of our land. They just stopped. They stopped pounding our cities with attack after attack, they stopped hitting us with air raids from their starships, and they didn't send reinforcements. They left us to our anarchy, with our society collapsed and our largest population centers in ruins. There wasn't a single country unaffected by the invasion, save for some minor islands that were small and insignificant enough to go under the radar.

When we began to pick up the rubble and rebuild in September, we realized that they hadn't left us alone as much as we thought. Morark soldiers still roam the world, as part of some alien operation that none of us know the specifics of. They swarm to certain areas like insects around a hive, and spread outwards from there. When the dust cleared from the war, the Morark began to build massive cities on certain sites, and nobody has ever went into one of those cities and lived. Hell, we don't think anyone has survived going within a ten mile radius of one of the cities. Sometimes, one of our own will attempt to scale the walls outside of one, and then show up butchered at our doorstep a week later, with a message like 'don't come back' written on their body. Other times, we simply never see the person again.

It's November now, and to put it simply, life sucks. Just surviving is a constant grind of finding food and resources, fighting with Morarks, trying to rebuild, and then repeating as alien attacks ruin our work. We originally thought they were leaving us alone, but they seem to be pushing from the coasts to the inland regions, and we're getting pushed further and further towards the midwest every week. Maybe they really did invade us for land, or maybe this is their way of exterminating humans, at least in our part of the world.

But we'll survive. It's what we've done since August, and what we plan to do long into the future. Who are we? Well, like I said, we're survivors. You've got a choice to make. You can succumb to the troubles of the invasion, and give up on life, or you can be one of us, and fight back. We won't blame you if you choose the first path. But if you decide to fight for your home? We'll welcome you with open arms. Maybe you'll even help us figure out the truth behind who the Morark are, and why they decided to ruin everything.

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Survivors, the first chapter in what will hopefully be a series of RPGs set in the months and years after an alien invasion plunges the world into anarchy. Note that I said RPG instead of simply saying RP, because this series will have more themes of a classic role playing game than most threads. The environment will constantly be a threat to you, and there will be many times when I, the DM, prompt you with choices that will affect your chances of survival. There is also a storyline hidden under the chaos and noise of the anarchy going on in the world, and if you dig enough, you can discover it.

To sum up the early story, the world was invaded by the Morark, a formerly benevolent alien race who turned on us in August of 2016. The Morark solved the world's energy problems by giving humans an enhanced version of nuclear power, and they also showed them how to create energy based weapons and hyper-fast computers with record-breaking capabilities. However, this was only a ruse, and the August Betrayal saw them turn on humanity and invade with a fleet of starships and an advanced army.

Now, the world is in chaos and the Morark are building their own cities in the ruins of what we left behind. In the USA, the east and west coast are where the Morark sites are, but they are slowly pushing to the midwest and southwest as Americans begin to flee towards those areas for safety. While this is happening, communities and even nation states are setting up and seizing control over pre-war resources such as factories, oil drills, and power plants, and using these resources to increase their power.

The RPG will start with a group of survivors meeting up in Vancouver and planning to travel east before the Morark influence in Washington spreads north, but you do not have to be a part of this group and you can, and are encouraged to, form your own or join another one if you desire. This will largely be a sandbox RPG where you can do what you please, but there will be challenges from both humans and aliens, and the environment. Keep in mind that while we won't be going for Game of Thrones levels of deaths, your characters aren't immortal and you won't be allowed to godmod your way out of it if you put them in a stupid situation. The setting might be a sandbox, but there is an underlying story that will be revealed through the course of the RPG. After all, this is only the first chapter in what I'm planning to be a trilogy.

THE ENEMY

The Morark are one race, but some of them have different abilities than others. There's also humans who have been forcefully converted to the alien side, as well as other threats that you'll learn of soon...

The Morark are a humanlike race, that looks quite similar to us except for their pale, grey skin, and their multiple rows of sharklike teeth. Their internal composition is drastically different than humans, but on the outside, it can be hard to tell the difference between the two races without looking at their skin, their yellow eyes, or their teeth. While they are similar in appearance, the average Morark is much, much stronger than the average human, being able to lift a small car on average.

Grunts
The backbone of the invasion force. These guys can be recognized by their grey powered armor, and the black one way visors on their helmets, that cover their entire face. They aren't any stronger or more powerful than the average Morark, but their armor is very hard to breach with anything less than an automatic rifle. The armor's weak points are at the joints, specifically the elbows, knees, and neck area, but the rest of the armor is rock hard. Trying to engage a Grunt with a knife is practically a death wish, although some have found success in fighting them with long bladed weapons that can target the joints. While all Morark are aggressive, Grunts are utter sadists who will go out of their way to cause harm to humans, and have even been sighted eating humans in some cases. Whether this is a result of the Morark culture, or of training, is unknown.

Psychics
Morark psychics don't have as strong a suit of armor as Grunts, nor are they as physically strong, but they have demonstrated the ability to move things telekinetically. They can also use certain telepathic attacks, which mainly disorient others through scrambling their thoughts. Extended exposure to psychics has been known to cause insanity, and they seem to cause negative affects on the human mind, even if they aren't purposely trying to do so. Extremely dangerous, and running is a good idea after seeing one.

Squids
These are exactly what they sound like. Flying squidlike creatures with tentacles lined with razor sharp teeth. These are the shock troops of the Morark, and few manage to survive without serious harm once a squid latches onto bare skin. Fortunately, they aren't near as durable as any of the other Morark units. Squids almost always accompany a Grunt that acts as a handler.

More information will be added as more aliens are discovered.

Reds
Humans under the control of the Morark are known as Reds because of their distinctive red eyes. It isn't known how humans fall under alien control, but it's believed that this comes from exposure to Psychics. Reds behave like Grunts, and have reduced intelligence. They still retain all of their skills, including their speed, so they're more dangerous than the 'zombies' that they have been compared to, and they can use firearms and other weapons.

Bandit Coalition
A group of raiders and looters who banded together after the invasion, to create a monopoly on looting. With chapters in every major city, they're a constant threat for survivors, and they sometimes demand tribute from groups of survivors for safe passage through cities controlled by them. Very decentralized, but they still have a central leadership structure based in Chicago. Most of their members aren't truly dangerous, but some of them have access to heavy weapons and are the best armed humans in the land.

New Legion
Created out of the ashes of FEMA, the New Legion is the self proclaimed successor to the United States government, and has been battling for control over the Midwest with the Bandits. Their manpower isn't as high as other groups, but they have the best weaponry and technology and have even made gains in the Midwest against the Morark. While their leaders come from the government, their equipment is from the Army, and they expertly train their forces in military tactics. Not necessarily hostile to everyone, but very protective of their turf.

FRIENDLY FACTIONS

Not everyone in this world is an enemy. Here's the factions that are sympathetic to the protagonists.

The protagonists of the story, the Survivors are a Northwest based group who came up with a daring plan to travel to safety in the east. The original members were mostly survivalists who were much more prepared than the average person for the invasion, and their membership surged after the initial Morark landing. After the invasion, many members joined because they wanted to protect themselves and their families, and the Survivors moved into a large villa outside of Vancouver, which they fortified and used as a base until deciding that the Northwest isn't safe. Currently, their plan is to use Navy ships from the east coast to travel to Portugal, which was affected much less by the invasion. Their membership base is somewhat split between survivalists, average people, and looters.

More factions will be added as they appear...

RULES

1: Don't break the site rules and get us locked.
2: My decisions are final, since I'm the OP. The Co-OPs should also be listened to, and they can accept or reject applications and move the story along.
3: Your character can't be in the military at the time of the invasion. I don't want too many veterans either. The game won't be challenging enough if everyone has military training. Police characters are fine, though.
4: TG me if you want to play an alien character.
5: By joining this RPG, you accept that your character may not survive the whole storyline.
6: Posts should be at least a paragraph. There might be exceptions, like for back and forth dialogue, but avoid one liners.
7: No, you can't join the New Legion to get better weapons.

Well technically my character could have distant relatives who are welsh as england (which controlled wales at the time) tried to take over ireland by building towns in ireland that were protestant and loyal to the crown. For information look up the Ulster Plantation

You're going to need to work on detail if you want to get accepted, the bio should be at least a couple of paragraphs. You should also have a detailed appearance if you aren't using a picture.

Also, I'm going to have my own apps up soon and when we get some signups there will be a list of characters as the second post.

From time to time he engaged in some Grey-hat hacking though he wasn't to good at it. He tried to keep a healthy diet but he had a cheat day on every other day.
Days before the August betrayal, Cormac arrived at Seattle to visit some friends. During the War he and his friends escaped the city away from the Moraks. Sometime later they were ambushed in a forest. Cormac managed to get away, leaving his friends behind. After roughly 20 minutes of running he stops as he is sure that he is safe. After having a rest he hears something from deeper in the woods. He investigates only to find his friends. As he approaches, his friends look at him and suddenly lash out at him. Forced to run again, he tries go further into the woods. When he is sure he lost them he finds a cabin which seemed to belong to someone in the military. There he finds a map on which Vancouver is circled in red pen. He decides to go to Vancouver as he believes it should be safe. This time he won't trust anyone.
He isn't aware of the Reds being a thing and believes that his friends attacked him because he left them behind.

Yeah. Maybe your character can even know one of my characters who will be a convict for murdering an alien before the war(for reasons that will be revealed later).

Thanks. Also, is it okay if my guy escaped from Cook County Jail in Chicago and made his way to Toronto?

Sure but he'd have to find some way to meet the others, since they're in Vancouver or the Pacific Northwest.

Actually, he could make his way to Vancouver. Also, is it okay if his escape happened during his parole hearing, during which the aliens invaded Chicago?

Fine by me, although please note that Chicago is the heart of the Bandit Coalition and it's not easy to get in and out of.

He got out of Chicago the day the invasion happened. Also, is it okay if he is being pursued by a mysterious individual who calls himself a "bounty hunter"? If it is, could you play as him as an NPC?

Yes, that's fine. I'd probably need some details about this character though.

#Application
Name: Jennifer Ma
Appearance: Grace Park
Gender: Female
Age: 39
Ethnicity: Korean
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Personality:
Definitely a nice and sweet person, probably stemmed off from a very happy childhood with her friends. But also kind of a loner sometimes, always finding different interest. Landing on the job of bartender, for example, is one of those "different interest." Spoiled sweet to a degree, and always kind of relaxed. Sociable, but sometimes reserved in a way. After the invasion, she turned quiet and even more reserved. Perhaps tired.
Strengths:
-Basic military training
-Basic survivalist
-Poison training (Well, actually knows more about mixes alcoholic drinks, but knows the ingredients for the dangerous formula as well)
Weaknesses:
-Not really the most fit person despite the training, it only made her slightly better than untrained civilian, but still knows how to use a gun and fight close-combat. Just slightly better than civilian.
-Paranoia
-A bit too idealistic
Bio:

Filthy rich is perhaps, one thing that can be described from her life. She was born rich but not the richest, her father had invested a lot of his money on stock market, and her mother is basically a somewhat world-renowned chef, you'd think that her life is happy, right? Full of joys?

Wrong.

Her parents instinctively ignored her since they basically were busy with their own businesses, and most of Jen's time was spent either with the so many servants, or just with her gang, whom she met when she was younger in her life. One of the perks she learned was that bartender, something she gained when she was 15. One of her mother's friend is a bartender, and he taught her after she showed some interests. But not just that, as she later gained entry to shooting range where she learned how to use guns. Bartender and guns, not a particularly unknown combination. She moved more independent as she grew older, with the dream of building her very own bar with her as the bartender, with fames, lots of it. And then perhaps...her parents would be happy with it.

Then the invasion happened, and all was lost in the daze. She never able to contacted her parents and she was forced to hid inside her bar, now abandoned. Thankfully a group of soldiers approached the bar and she was rescued. Not long after that, and given few more training and BAM! She joined the fight, with others. Guns on left and right hands, it soon dawned to her that despite of it, the resistance was more or less a failed resistance. She soon escaped after the last of her cells was destroyed, and she soon found herself on the run. Lived by scavenging had made her somewhat trained in survivalist, however, she has the newfound sense of idealism on the topic of human freedom.

Ever since the end, she didn't do much. She lived in Vancouver, basically on the run, and not with many friends nor comrades. Until now.
