SURVIVORS
Part One: Black Swan
It's not the end of the world. Okay, it probably is.
BACKGROUND
The death of civilization began when the Morark landed on Earth. X-Day, they called it, although in hindsight, doomsday would have made more sense. We believed the Morark when they said that they were a wandering race of aliens who were looking for land to relocate their people too, because their homeworld was facing environmental troubles. When they offered us advanced technology that brought our knowledge of energy, weaponry, computing, and other fields forward by decades, we gladly accepted and in return gave them tracts of unused land to colonize. Their cities quickly grew in size and stature, and a symbiotic relationship began. We left them alone in their enclaves, and they sold us technology that improved the lives of millions. For months, the arrival of the Morark was viewed as the best thing to ever happen to humans, and anyone who treated them with suspicion was viewed as paranoid at best and xenophobic at worst.
But then, the August Surprise happened. Some say that a border skirmish between the California National Guard and the Morark colony in the middle of the state was what caused it. Others say that a foreign incident invoked the wrath of the aliens. And some think that it was completely unprovoked, and that the plan the entire time was to get humans to let their guard down before invading the planet. Millions worldwide died on that first day of the war, the Third of August. Los Angeles, London, Beijing, Paris, and Tokyo all became battlegrounds and were all hit by the full force of the Morark, who proved to be more advanced than we thought they were.
We did what we could to protect ourselves, but it was a worthless fight. By the second week of the human-Morark war, all of the major governments had collapsed, and anyone who hadn't been invaded yet was on the brink of collapsing because of the general anarchy that showed up after the war started. Once they'd broken everyone, they stopped.
They didn't enslave the planet, or kill everyone, or even take all of our land. They just stopped. They stopped pounding our cities with attack after attack, they stopped hitting us with air raids from their starships, and they didn't send reinforcements. They left us to our anarchy, with our society collapsed and our largest population centers in ruins. There wasn't a single country unaffected by the invasion, save for some minor islands that were small and insignificant enough to go under the radar.
When we began to pick up the rubble and rebuild in September, we realized that they hadn't left us alone as much as we thought. Morark soldiers still roam the world, as part of some alien operation that none of us know the specifics of. They swarm to certain areas like insects around a hive, and spread outwards from there. When the dust cleared from the war, the Morark began to build massive cities on certain sites, and nobody has ever went into one of those cities and lived. Hell, we don't think anyone has survived going within a ten mile radius of one of the cities. Sometimes, one of our own will attempt to scale the walls outside of one, and then show up butchered at our doorstep a week later, with a message like 'don't come back' written on their body. Other times, we simply never see the person again.
It's November now, and to put it simply, life sucks. Just surviving is a constant grind of finding food and resources, fighting with Morarks, trying to rebuild, and then repeating as alien attacks ruin our work. We originally thought they were leaving us alone, but they seem to be pushing from the coasts to the inland regions, and we're getting pushed further and further towards the midwest every week. Maybe they really did invade us for land, or maybe this is their way of exterminating humans, at least in our part of the world.
But we'll survive. It's what we've done since August, and what we plan to do long into the future. Who are we? Well, like I said, we're survivors. You've got a choice to make. You can succumb to the troubles of the invasion, and give up on life, or you can be one of us, and fight back. We won't blame you if you choose the first path. But if you decide to fight for your home? We'll welcome you with open arms. Maybe you'll even help us figure out the truth behind who the Morark are, and why they decided to ruin everything.
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Survivors, the first chapter in what will hopefully be a series of RPGs set in the months and years after an alien invasion plunges the world into anarchy. Note that I said RPG instead of simply saying RP, because this series will have more themes of a classic role playing game than most threads. The environment will constantly be a threat to you, and there will be many times when I, the DM, prompt you with choices that will affect your chances of survival. There is also a storyline hidden under the chaos and noise of the anarchy going on in the world, and if you dig enough, you can discover it.
To sum up the early story, the world was invaded by the Morark, a formerly benevolent alien race who turned on us in August of 2016. The Morark solved the world's energy problems by giving humans an enhanced version of nuclear power, and they also showed them how to create energy based weapons and hyper-fast computers with record-breaking capabilities. However, this was only a ruse, and the August Betrayal saw them turn on humanity and invade with a fleet of starships and an advanced army.
Now, the world is in chaos and the Morark are building their own cities in the ruins of what we left behind. In the USA, the east and west coast are where the Morark sites are, but they are slowly pushing to the midwest and southwest as Americans begin to flee towards those areas for safety. While this is happening, communities and even nation states are setting up and seizing control over pre-war resources such as factories, oil drills, and power plants, and using these resources to increase their power.
The RPG will start with a group of survivors meeting up in Vancouver and planning to travel east before the Morark influence in Washington spreads north, but you do not have to be a part of this group and you can, and are encouraged to, form your own or join another one if you desire. This will largely be a sandbox RPG where you can do what you please, but there will be challenges from both humans and aliens, and the environment. Keep in mind that while we won't be going for Game of Thrones levels of deaths, your characters aren't immortal and you won't be allowed to godmod your way out of it if you put them in a stupid situation. The setting might be a sandbox, but there is an underlying story that will be revealed through the course of the RPG. After all, this is only the first chapter in what I'm planning to be a trilogy.
THE ENEMY
The Morark are one race, but some of them have different abilities than others. There's also humans who have been forcefully converted to the alien side, as well as other threats that you'll learn of soon...
FRIENDLY FACTIONS
Not everyone in this world is an enemy. Here's the factions that are sympathetic to the protagonists.
More factions will be added as they appear...
RULES
1: Don't break the site rules and get us locked.
2: My decisions are final, since I'm the OP. The Co-OPs should also be listened to, and they can accept or reject applications and move the story along.
3: Your character can't be in the military at the time of the invasion. I don't want too many veterans either. The game won't be challenging enough if everyone has military training. Police characters are fine, though.
4: TG me if you want to play an alien character.
5: By joining this RPG, you accept that your character may not survive the whole storyline.
6: Posts should be at least a paragraph. There might be exceptions, like for back and forth dialogue, but avoid one liners.
7: No, you can't join the New Legion to get better weapons.
