2070. The Fusion Age was in full swing. All of the energy production that had wrecked our planet had, for decades, been replaced by clean fusion... but everything has a price. We needed neodymium for the magnetic confinement, and for the lasers, which meant the mining of our planet could not cease.

When a new star drifted into our stellar neighborhood in early 1973, nobody thought anything of it. When it closed within the distance of Alpha-Centauri in 2048, we began taking interest. When it almost seemed to have settled into orbit barely two light years from Earth in 2070, we looked over it. Only one planet in orbit, a couple moons, but it seemed perfect - and it had a vast supply of neodymium.

We sent a probe fueled by a fusion drive to investigate. The area where it landed in 2076 seemed viable enough - and nothing was coming our way - but we needed someone on the ground to take a look.

We had enough neodymium in reserve at the time to send a ship with one person in cryogenic freeze. Arynnia Evans disappeared within just a few minutes of leaving her spacecraft on arrival in May 2083. She hadn't died... she just vanished. One moment, everything was fine, the next, we had no signal from her radios, her life support systems, or her lander. She only had enough time to name the planet Syltara, and relay a few key details about the area in which she had landed.

It's been more than 31 years since Arynnia disappeared. The limited supply of neodymium had become critical in 2089, so we went back in force. Until recently, we'd had no problems with... whatever it was that lived on this planet, but we had no clue what was building. On 25 January 2115, three days before the next three-year crew arrived, the base was attacked. We'd been preparing for a potential attack since we started constructing Phoenix Base in 2097, and thus we fought back the attack. It was what we found afterward that interested us, though. All the bodies we retrieved were clearly insectoid or reptilian in nature. What we found on the cameras was even stranger, though. It almost looked human after we sketched it out. We wondered: was this Arynnia? What had become of her all those years ago? Would we be able to negotiate with what she had become, and what had attacked us? Would we have to fight? It would be up to the next crew to decide...

A new, darker take on the universe of James Cameron's Avatar with elements of the StarCraft universe, almost entirely player-driven... but conquering the mysteries of Syltara will not be so straightforward...

SYLTARA

Syltara is a planet discovered in 2071 around a star at a distance of 1.799 light years from Earth, and is the closest planet capable of sustaining life. It is roughly 1.28 Earth masses, and with a surface gravity of 1.1G, it is within a range of adaptability for humans. The atmosphere has slightly less height and pressure (897 mb at mean sea level, the equivalent of an altitude of 985 m or 3 230 ft), but with a slightly larger partial pressure of oxygen (239 mb, versus 211 on Earth), the remainder of the atmosphere in the form of neon (which is, actually, safe to breathe).

Here, the similarities end. The "oceans" are significantly smaller than Earth's, and Syltara is, in places, highly volcanic, though lava tends to bring neodymium-rich materials to the surface, so it is a good place to mine when the volcanoes are calm. Earth plants can grow in some regions, but they often grow less in Syltara's soil than they do on Earth (fewer nutrients), and life does live on Syltara in certain parts of the environment.

The planet's crust has a high concentration of neodymium, which is what makes it so crucial to human operations, however the local lifeforms are not exactly in agreement, wanting to protect their home after building up their strength against this new threat for more than 30 years.

History

It has been theorized that Syltara and its star system were ejected from their star cluster at a high velocity approximately 35 million years ago, by which point life had been developing on Syltara for roughly 2.85 billion years.

By roughly 500 years ago, the earliest forms of life that would later call themselves the Syltaran Swarm began to evolve, linking themselves in an elaborate hive mind and diversifying into many specialized lifeforms, of which these have been seen by humans, by the time of the Syltara system's arrival near Sol.

A sequence of stellar eruptions combined with the attraction of Sol's stellar group shifted the Syltara system's galactic orbit into a plane and speed nearly parallel to that of our sun's between 2063 and 2070, after which the planet was discovered by a team of scientists in March 2071. A probe was launched to Syltara in 2072, arriving in mid-2075 and conducting orbital studies until landing in 2076. The Arynnia Evans mission was dispatched to Syltara in 2080, only for Arynnia, the lander, and the orbital craft to disappear without trace on 19 May 2083.

As the situation on Earth grew ever more critical in the late 2080s, a larger expedition was sent to Syltara, which landed in 2097 and began to construct Phoenix Base, beginning mining and refinement operations in late 2098. Operations at Phoenix proceeded without incident until 2115, when a Syltaran horde attacked the base on 25 January. Able to repel the attack with relative ease, the discovery was made that Arynnia may not have died in 2083, or that the Syltarans have simply begun producing more humanoid forms after killing Arynnia.

Arynnia Evans (b. 23 August 2045, MIA (presumed KIA) 19 May 2083) was an astronaut with the United Nations Space Agency from 2068 through her disappearance on 19 May 2083. A jovial character when not working on a project or training for a mission, Evans joined the astronaut corps of the UNSA in 2068 to 'satisfy an urge to reach the future'. She served as a science specialist on board Space Station Unity from 2069 through 2071, and then commanded the station in 2073 and 2074, overseeing multiple interplanetary missions to Mars and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn.

In 2076, Arynnia was selected for the cryo-freeze mission to Syltara to launch in 2080. She began four years of training for her mission alongside several other astronauts, as many believed her mission would be quickly followed by others (high concentrations of critically-needed neodymium were detected by the 2075 probe). Upon launch in January 2080, she entered her cryo-freeze pod for the next three years of travel.

Awakening on 22 April 2083 in Low Syltara Orbit, she made final preparations for the landing phase of the mission, which was expected to last ten days starting on 17 May 2083. The landing was delayed 2 days to 19 May due to storms over the landing site, and she landed successfully roughly 25 kilometers north of what would later become Phoenix Base on 19 May at 16:37 shipboard time. Experimental superluminal communications technology proved to be surprisingly effective over the distance, allowing less than seven minutes' time lag between Arynnia sending a message to Earth and its reception by the planet. Undertaking an EVA at 22:20:00 shipboard time (signals arriving 22:26:55.30 Earth time), she began to scout her landing site, however, all signals from Arynnia and the lander were abruptly lost at 22:43:07.65 shipboard time. Transmissions from the 2076 probe and its orbiter were still active, but could find no trace of Arynnia or her ship, and the search was called off in November 2083, with Arynnia's listing as missing, presumed dead.

31 years later, reviewing the footage from the attack on Phoenix Base, an unusually humanoid Syltaran was discovered participating in the attack on the base, which reopened interest into the search for Arynnia. This lifeform was known to have extraordinary powers, including teleportation, telekinesis, regeneration, and energy manipulation. Many suspect it may be a Syltaran-evolved Arynnia, though none are certain. If this is the case, however, many theorize that they may be able to negotiate with her, though luring her out for negotiations is far from a certain proposition.

Arynnia's disappearance remains one of the many mysteries of Syltara, however, with the sudden appearance of native Syltaran life, including this unknown lifeform, that mystery may soon be drawing to an end. Will it bring an end to humanity's work on Syltara as well?

She moved around a lot as her father was in the military and they had a tendency to move around wherever he was stationed. However, he didn't want his daughter to follow in his footsteps and she didn't initially wish to. That changed after her girlfriend was murdered. Elke felt lost and eventually joined the military after stumbling through her last semester of college. She eventually climbed up the ranks and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She was selected for the mission to Syltara because of her military expertise, and her abilities to think on the fly. She's set to land on Syltara three days after the attack. Will she be able to figure out what happened with Arynnia Evans? Or will she fall to the swarm?

Takeshi Hajime, or known as DOC 8, is the eight entry in the series of humanoid designed to provide medical aid, basic or advanced, to the humans. Beside being designed for medical aid, it also designed with strong exterior and system, and the basic combat training, if only for protection of the patients and themselves.

The DOC 8 is the latest entry and thus the most advanced as well as the most expensive ones, which United Nations need to since the previous entries of DOC had been either too weak to survive in the temperature of the strange world, or too exhaustible in battery system. Takeshi Hajime was designed with the mind of a serious professor with a degree in medicine and personality of a Star Trek fan but without the abnormal geekiness, preferred to be on normal level geekiness.

Was deployed to Syltara as part of the three-year crew, and then he started aiding the medical assistance to the base alongside the human staffs and previous DOCs.

Additional information: Armed with a pistol for protection, and know all kinds of medical symptoms and illnesses known on Earth and on Syltara.

A short biography (1-3 paragraphs): Surin Alyan was the only son to a prominent British general. His schoolmates found him to be a loner who'd never get a date, or even friends, for that matter, and he constantly picked on his younger sisters by hiding their dolls, and later their phones, until they cried. Upon graduating high school, he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps, and joined the military.
Alyan's military career had its ups and downs. He proved himself to be loyal, but had "trust issues" with others. His adaptability to various environments, kill without a second thought in a combat zone, and relay orders in the field earned him recognition from superior officers, and transfer to security on Phoenix Base was considered for his record. Alyan heard very little about the attack on the base and the missing frozen woman, and has his personal suspicions about the base and its occupants. Once he was transferred, his suspicions deepened, and doesn't think the government should be trusted with finding the woman.

A short biography (1-3 paragraphs): Born in Moscow at an undisclosed date, he was picked a t young age for military duty due to multiple civil and criminal offenses. Picked up in his teen by Russian intelligence, he spent the next 10 years training and fighting his way through most of the hell holes on earth. Having a licking to large caliber rifles and hunting, he was quickly molded in to a lethal assassin who's calling card was the fashion in which he hunted his prey. Often letting them get a few steps away, only to show up when least expected, he gained a reputation among those in the world. He prefered wooded, especially jungle areas due to their cover and the multitudes of materials he could use to hunt his prey. After a particular long and bloody mission against south American cartels , the locals gave him the nickname the "Jungle demon" although he prefered just "Demon", the name stuck. Eventually though, he left the game and only agreed to dawn his rifle and bush wookie suit to assist the new expedition in navigating the alien world.
