HOG CITY
IC THREAD

You open up your commlink to find a message waiting for you. Strange. You don't remember hearing it ring. Opening it, you are presented with the grinning orkish maw of Sunshine, an old friend. Or so she likes to say. You haven't worked with her in a while: last you heard, she was done with running the shadows and had set herself up as a fixer in Toronto. She was the only runner you knew who could simultaneously exist in a state of crippling debt and unworldly wealth. Everyone owed her, and she owed everyone.

When she spoke, it was like ice cracking under the weight of a semi. Her vaguely Yankee accent stopped being charming years ago. "Whoa, don't close the 'link just yet, boss!" She called everyone boss, especially those who weren't. "Boy, have I got an offer for you..."

You listen to her pitch. If it wasn't for her begging, you might've dropped the call. But you didn't, and you're glad you didn't.

She talked at length about her situation in Toronto, or "Hog City," as she liked to call it. How she was making it big as a fixer, and how she was almost entirely out of the running business. But she needed help, for one last job. And so, she was calling in old favors, and trying to pay off whatever debts she could with this offer: help her with this run, and walk away rich enough to sit pretty for the rest of your miserable, SINless life. Or go buy some new cyberware and keep on trucking. She had her heart set on the former, but as long as you didn't get her geeked, she wouldn't care what you did with your share.

And all you had to do was meet her in Toronto and help with one job. In and out, no mess, no fuss.

The job? She couldn't get into too much detail over the comm, but the implication was tasty: interrupt a deal between two power players, take the goods, and deliver them to her client. The details would be explained when you arrived in Toronto. Not a promising lead, but the payday was platinum. "At least half a mil each," she beamed through the commlink, "for work you've done for less. And the gold mine don't stop there, compadre!"

"I need the best of the available, chummer, and that's you." With that, she signed off, and moments later you found a couple hundred Nuyen and a ticket to Toronto had been slipped into your accounts. For a moment, you considered pawning the ticket and running with the money. Sunshine might be mad, for all you know. Or maybe she's trying to off you. Couldn't be too sure when you ran shadows for a living.

But her words lingered in your head. A mountain of Nuyen for everyone who took up the job. A hard offer to resist.

Ah, frag it. You've always wanted to see Toronto anyway.

If it wasn't clear by the header, welcome to Shadowrun: Hog City, a story set in 2070 in the Shadowrun universe, a world of cyborg and mage mercenaries who work off the grid both for and against the interests of megacorporations, who dominate the political and economic landscape of the Awakened world.

If you don't know a whole lot about Shadowrun, I recommend you peruse the timeline before applying or thinking of applying, even though in depth knowledge won't be a requirement for joining this RP. I have a decent enough understanding of the world, so feel free to ask if you have any questions.

You will be playing as a shadowrunner, a criminal mercenary operative who uses magic, cybernetics, guile, hacking or sheer brute strength to make ends meet. Somehow, you know this woman, Sunshine, who just called you after years of no contact to offer you the job of a lifetime: one hit on one target in exchange for the biggest payday of your life. So you take off to Toronto to meet her, where our story will begin as you get wrapped up in a mission that might be beyond your skill - or pay - level.

As for me, I will be your DM throughout this journey, playing the NPCs, major enemies, and the like as you make your way through this adventure. I'll try to remain away from the decision making in your party to give you guys free reign, but I will guide you in your direction by offering you the missions you will be doing. How you complete them is up to you.

As a note, I'm not going to be accepting too many people. I want to make sure that everyone is involved in the story, and that means having fewer than a dozen participating. So if you find that this is closed with eight or nine, wait around, see if we might take another. But I do have a cap in mind.

I'm not going to waste any time here flowering anything up, and I think the best way to give information about this world to those who haven't played in it before is through the application, so here we go. Please read all of it, and delete the portions that are italicized.

APPLICATION
Nationstates Name: The name of your nation on NS. For administrative purposes.
Character's Real Name: In Shadowrun, shadowrunners tend to have a name they were born with, and a street handle, which they use when dealing with clients and coworkers. This is the former. If your character has completely abandoned any trace of their former identity or has never had one, leave this blank.
Character's Street Name: What people call your character when they are 'at work,' dealing with other runners, criminals and those who could make use of your real identity. If your character does not use a street name, please leave this blank.
Character's Metatype: Metatypes are the different 'races' of Shadowrun, namely human, elf, dwarf, ork, and troll. Each has its own benefits and detractors - humans are the baseline, elves are long lived and seen as the 'fortunate species,' dwarves are resistant to most diseases and have good low light vision, orks are generally stronger but have a slower wit and are short lived, while trolls are gargantuan and have tusks and horns and physical resistance at the cost of their mental capacity. Choose one. Half breeds cannot exist.
Appearance: What your character looks like. Please use a detailed description or a picture. If using a picture try to keep roughly in line with the Shadowrun depiction of the metatypes. Otherwise go nuts.
Awakened?: Yes or no. Being 'Awakened' means having an affinity for magic, either as a mage (using spells learned from tomes and such), a shaman (using magic tied to spirits and the natural world) or as a physical adept (using Chi to enhance your physical prowess.) All people have Essence, which is your magical tether to reality, and Essence is lost through the purchase of Cyberware. Once lost, Essence CANNOT be regained, so if you're a mage, choose your cyber-enhancements wisely...
Character's Class: The classes, and what they can do, are as follows. They are not set I'm stone and may be customized or altered as you see fit to make a character, use these as the building blocks.

  • Street Samurai - a warrior who uses guns and sometimes swords to either clean the streets or sells them to the highest bidder;
  • Mage - a student of magic in the classical sense, pouring over tomes and ancient knowledge to better his spellcraft;
  • Shaman - a magic user who is found by a totem and taught by it to use magic and summon spirits;
  • Adept - magic users who channel their chi to gain physical powers;
  • Decker - a hacker who uses the Wireless Matrix to hack;
  • Rigger - the controller of one or more drones who he uses to do combat or for espionage.

If you do not like any listed, feel free to be original or to cross-class.

Strengths: Tell me what your character is good at. This can be something simple like a physical trait, ie has two cybernetic arms that increase his strength, or a more elaborate, hidden strength, ie contacts within several major megacorporations. Remember, you are a run-of-the-mill runner: you can be unique and interesting WITHOUT going crazy.
Weaknesses: Tell me what your character sucks at. It could be something physical, ie being so cybered out that he no longer can cast magic or keep real emotions, or something a bit more nuanced, ie being hunted by cultists from Europe. Once again, make things interesting without going too overboard, but you've got a lot more wiggle room here than with strengths if you want to get wacky.
Relationship with Sunshine: Describe how you and Sunshine know each other. It could be that you two used to run together in the past. Or maybe she fixed you up with your first gig as a runner, even though you two never worked together yourself. Perhaps she screwed you on a deal and left only an "IOU" sticker taped to your apartment door. Make it interesting, and make it characterize both you and Sunshine - I will be using this field to fill out her character and guide the RP, so have fun!
Biography: Finally, tell me your character's story up until this point. What got them into running the shadows? Has this life been kind to them? What do their parents think of this? Ask yourself questions, answer them, and give me your character's life on a silver platter. Ideally look up some things about Shadowrun on their wikia if you want to impress me with specifics on where your character is from and what they've been doing up to this point.

    Current Cast of Characters:

  2. Holy Lykos - Patrick "Squirrel" Branagan, The Best App Ever and Co-OP

RULES OF THE RUN
  • Do not betray your team mates: this is a mostly cooperative roleplay. Try not to kill each other, to the best of your abilities.
  • Don't count your kills before they touch the floor: in other words, no godmodding.
  • Anything could go wrong, so prepare for everything: your characters are vulnerable. If they die or get injured, it happens. Play it out.
  • If you've nothing nice to say, say nothing at all: be respectful to me and your other players, even if your characters hate each others' guts.
  • All rules can be broken: that's not true. They are absolute. Unless I say so. Which I won't. Probably.

A Runner's Guide to the Awakened World - A Dictionary and Encyclopedia

To better help explain this world in which you are embarking, I will endeavor to explain key concepts, characters, corporations and countries, among other things, here. This will hopefully help you get a better grasp of the world and it's people, and will be updated as often as I am able to. If you have any questions or comments, or would like further clarification to a subject here, message me privately. Enjoy!

Ares Macrotechnology - Owners of Apple, General Motors, and the Knights Errant, as well as hundreds of other subsidiaries and divisions, Ares Macrotechnology is the largest corporation in the United Canadian and American States and the leader in weapons manufacturing and defense contracting. The big, scary, patriotic corp that arms half the world, it is known for involving itself with clandestine operations quite frequently through the use of its private army, the corpsec poster children, the Knights Errant.

Aztechnology - Former cartel union turned corporate backers to the superpower that is Aztlan, Aztechnology dominate North America as the second largest megacorp in the world. Specializing in the magical industry and consumer goods, Aztech gear can be seen across the world, and their goods fill metahuman cupboards more than any other company. They are known in the shadows for their horrific, gruesome magical and genetics experiences, where many runners have disappeared to after crossing the megacorp.

Aztlan - Aztlan is a country covering all of Central America, between Rio Bravo and Nueces River and the Andes. The dominant power in North America, Aztlan is a corporate state like any other, ruled by Aztechnology through a puppet government. It frequently wars with the Native American Nations, which it was once a part of, the Confederate American States, and Amazonia.

Chummer - A word meaning friend in common runner lingo.

Corpsec - Corpsec, or corporate security, is a slang term for the various armed, militarized companies and private armies that exist to enforce the will of the megacorps. Ranging from the police contractors Lone Star, to the highly militarized Knights Errant, to the infamous and deadly Renraku Red Samurai, corpsec is the normal adversary to any experienced runner who has moved past fighting security guards and gangsters.

Evo Corporation - Largest Russian corporation and the leading figure in bio- and nanotechnology, Evo has transformed their home of Vladivostok into a technological Mecca.

Hoi - A common greeting in the shadows, rooted in Dutch.

Horizon Group - Horizon is a media and public relations conglomerate based out of Los Angeles, in the Pueblo Corporate Council. Only a recent company that came to the surface after Crash 2.0, Horizon has fought its way to the limelight as a media giant, but hides a sinister streak just beneath the surface.

NeoNET - Founded by the merger of three companies shortly after the Crash 2.0, NeoNET is responsible for the Wireless Matrix, the computer grid network that supports modern civilization. Many blame their predecessors for Crash 2.0 in the first place, which unleashed a rogue AI on the web, but they have bounced back and now represent a controlling interest in software development, among other fields.

Matrix - The Matrix is the virtual reality wireless network that connects the Sixth World. Working with symbols and graphics, the wireless Matrix ensures that anyone with a comm or deck can connect through NeoNETs grid.

Mitsuhama Computer Technologies - Mitsuhama, or MCT, is primarily a computers and robotics developer, but also deals in magical goods and multimedia as part of their diverse holdings. Leading in the Simsense market and following S-K in industry and Aztechnology in magic, MCT is a giant in Asia, perhaps because of its close Yakuza connections.

Nuyen - Nuyen, often abbreviated as nu, is the official currency of the Imperial State of Japan, and the leading global currency in the Awakened world. Officially adopted and managed by the world's largest bank and taken on officially by several countries, including the Native American Nations that surround the UCAS, it has become the standard for international trade over the past half century, accepted anywhere with a Matrix link.

Omae - A common word meaning "best friend" among runners. Can often be used sarcastically to refer to someone you dislike.

Renraku Computer Systems - The fifth largest corporation in the world and among the largest in Japan, Renraku has weathered a thousand storms and retained its status as a leading megacorp in computer technologies. The home of the dangerous and fanatical Red Samurai, they are a force in the shadows, known to outsource their espionage efforts to runners for a decent wage. They have recently survived the Arcology Shutdown, in which their massive worker city was locked down by a rogue AI, torturing its residents for two years before being defeated.

Saeder-Krupp - Owner of BMW and largest corporation in the world, it functions as the personal hoard of the Great Dragon Lofwyr, who is the company's sole owner and CEO. With divisions responsible for everything from firearms to aerospace, S-K has their hands in everything, and through their wealth and power Lofwyr is able to play the strings of fate to his will.

Shiawase - A family owned business from Japan and eighth largest megacorp in the world, Shiawase has eked out a profitable existence by remaining under family control. It was only recently forced into internal conflict when the Empress married an Otaku member of the family and started off the Shadow Wars, with her allies and the directors board fought for control of the company.

Simsense - Entertainment media that allows the user to experience the senses and feelings of another person within a prerecorded setting. While used legitimately to showcase detailed shows or experiences that can be felt "first hand," an illegal market exists for so called Better Than Life or BTL, which lack the inhibitors placed on legal simsense. They can range from illegal porn to thrilling gunplay to gruesome murder.

SIN - A SIN, or System Identification Number, is the virtual footprint of an individual who is the citizen of a Global SIN Registrant country. Part birth cert, part passport, part social security number, SINs are how the government keeps a track of its population in the Awakened, wired world. Almost all legitimate citizens have them, and those that don't are usually operating under fakes.

SINless - Being "SINless" is the state of not having a SIN, either because you were not registered at birth, or your destroyed anything that might connect you to that old identity. Most SINless are the poor, immigrants, or otherwise outcasts from society who are prevented from participating in society by denying them a SIN. Others, namely runners, "burn" their SINs to prevent the government from tracking them or their crimes.

Soy - Genetically engineered soy is used as a replacement product for many meats, as well as other products on the food market. Soybeef is now the main protein component in many establishments for use in items from burgers to burritos, while soykaf has dominated the beverage market for decades.

Wuxing, Inc - The largest Chinese corporation and based out of the corporate city state of Hong Kong, Wuxing is focused primarily on shipping and consumer goods, but since achieving worldwide AAA status, has expanded rapidly into other fields. It has a unique interest in spirits and their connection to magic, and is among the strongest new megacorps to take the field following Crash 2.0.

Thanks! I'm not requiring any forehand knowledge of Shadowrun to participate, but looking at the timeline I linked in the OP will probably help you somewhat. Feel free to ask if you have any questions about the setting or the application.

I didn't even know you were still around, Ceann. I'll certainly give this a look.
For really, I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he. And therefore truly, Sir, I think it's clear that every man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that Government. And I do think that the poorest man in England is not at all bound in a strict sense to that Government that he hath not had a voice to put himself under.

Only recently returned. I've been in and out for a while. According to my account this stint was 150-odd days.

Wip, Need to post what I have before I head out for dinner

New to Shadowrun too, but I do like what I've seen.

Nationstates Name: Holy Lykos

Character's Real Name: Pádraig Ó Branagáin, Patrick Branagan

Character's Street Name: Iora, Squirrel. Its a leftover nickname from back in his home of Ireland, when he was smaller and more of a skittery and scattered fighter. It later was his codename during a failure of an operation that left him exiled.

Character's Metatype: Dwarf

Appearance: slightly redder hair

Awakened?: No

Character's Class: A mix of a brawler and Decker. Someone who can hack his way through the matrix with the best of them, but isn't shy of a fistfight. Prefers up close and personal to any sort of ranged combat, usually with his fists over any sort of weapon.

Strengths: Strength, literally. He can slug someone hard enough put them on their ass or out cold. This is largely natural and trained strength, but he's gotten a few augmentations to let him go all out, reinforced limbs and a more durable dermis to protect him a bit more. Nothing crazy, just mild enhancements to increase physical performance and durability. They aren't replacements though, but rather improvements to his own natural form. His smaller frame lets him get into smaller spaces and hide more effectively than a full sized human or elf. Being as much of a fighter as he is, he's got good pain tolerance simply from enduring so much punishment in fights, win or loss. He's not the fastest, but being a small target he's harder to hit too.

He's quite adept at his hacking skill, having picked it up in his youth. He's not a master, but certainly quite adept at it. His specialty is breaking into corporate systems and siphoning away various resources and money. Padraig's first choice of approach is a subtle one involving hacking, and his second is always to fight his way out with his fists. His method tends to be rather brute force too, find the biggest weakness in security and blast through, usually using the chaos to do what he wants before leaving the system.

He has his connections to the Irish, and Irish-American, underground still, along with the few (about five) members of his broken gang. Those are a bit weak after a good few years being in hiding, but the more allies you have the better.

Weaknesses: His small size means he can't cover ground as fast as others can, and his skills do have a few shortfalls in certain areas. Mostly that when he gets frustrated he has a hard time focusing and is always tempted to jump right to the punch first ask questions never solution to a problem. He tends to get pissed off and angry often, leading to many less than rational decisions. When he's calm he seems rather emotionless, preferring to keep to himself. This leads him pretty to seem rather unlikable and cold, not that his personality is what really makes him attractive to potential employers.

His past has made him plenty of corporate enemies and the government of Tir na nOg, due to his faith and ties to terrorist and gang groups in Ireland. He was recently forcibly exiled from his homeland to flee charges of terrorism, and is effectively in hiding, given that him being caught would likely lead to life imprisonment at the least. He's made many enemies to put it simply, and plenty want his head.

Relationship with Sunshine: Sunshine? Right, that was "her" codename wasn't it? Gods, its been so long since that colossal fuckup....

Anyway, that Lass is more trouble than she seems. She may seem like she has a few screws loose, and she has more than that. Her whole damned brain seems to be loose! Her crazy schemes cost me more than anyone else. Hell, I have no idea what she even was doing in Tir na nOg that year. Showed up outa bloody nowhere, found her way to my gang's hideout, and managed to convince us that it was about time to make our fight something bigger than simple gang warfare and minor strikes. She's a motivator that one.... Silver tongued like a temptress and the skills to make her a threat to just about anyone she wants to cross.

Hell... After the prison break I'd been itching to get some sort of revenge in the name of our slighted gods, and we were larger than ever. We thought we could take on Bund na hÉireann easily. Not even an A rank corp, just a minor affiliate of Saeder-Krupp with barely any real defenses or security. Just old school guards, maybe a turret or two. No real threat. Oh were we going to be proven wrong. Since a lot of SK money goes through there with agreements between them and the Tir government, it had much more security than most corporations its size. Hell, taking on a subsidiary of the largest corporation ever was probably the stupidest thing we could have done at that time. Despite all I'd already been through, I was too naive and prone to flights of grandeur...

Sunny always loved the flashy jobs though. And hell, the news were talking about us for weeks! The crew that robbed millions from Saeder-Krupp before failing spectacularly. The news seemed to assume that all of us were captured and sentenced. Damned dragon running that company must have covered up the money he never recovered, and the crew that managed to evade capture and make it out of the country.

.....

No, I'm not giving you any more details than that. The heist's public knowledge, go read a damn book.

.....

Wha? Were Sunshine and I anything more? Fuck no. Never been into her type. Yes I mean females by that, what the fuck else do you think I mean. She was crazy too, fucking hell was she gloriously mad. I'd say we were pretty good friends. Idealistic criminals who'd learn how badly you can fuck up. Lost contact with her after, haven't heard jack shit in nearly a decade it seems like.

Anyway, I'm done talking, go find her if you want more about that fuckup of a heist, bloody gits. I left my tea on too long anyway.

Darknet interview of a former revolutionary and current Metroplex Gangster
Identity obscured to prevent his capture, codename "Squirrel" or "Iora"

Biography: Padraig was born in the new Tir na nOg, shortly after its inception, in 2037. His parents were both dwarves, highly magical ones, and he was their youngest child. But he was born without magic, much to his later chagrin. He had a fairly normal childhood, but grew fascinated with the Irish paganism. Revivalist religious movements had become popular among certain parts of the world with the appearance of metahumans, and Ireland was no exception. Many of these groups were looked down on by the new religious state, given the official state religion's power in the government. Padraig would grow to despise this oversight and repression of other faiths in Tir na nOg.

The dwarf would end up falling into foul crowds, his lack of belief in the new church of Ireland driving a split between him and the rest of his family. He instead turned to the old Gods of Ireland, the Sidhe or Tuath Dé. He disliked the Elven hierarchy had taken one of the terms for the old gods and used it for themselves while lacking any respect for them and worshiping a god not part of their people's history. As he grew up these resentments and hatred for the leaders of his homeland grew, and the young dwarf started trying to hack into various systems to find ways to work against the systems he hated.

The gang he was part of, the Laochra na Déithe Sean (Warriors of the Old Gods), was largely made of those of a similar mindset as Padraig. In fact, he'd even helped form it, becoming the Tánaiste for the Taoiseach of their little band. The second in command and to be leader should their first be arrested or otherwise incapacitated. They started as a relatively minor local nuisance, causing property damage to local churches of Ireland and and government land, it escalating ever so much over time. Eventually, Padraig was arrested for vandalism and put in jail for a month's time. It was then the dwarf started learning how to properly fight from the more hardened criminals, even managing to get a few of the ones inside to convert and join his cause.

He wasn't released on time, for various reasons. He had heard news that his fellows were in bad straits on the outside so the dwarf hatched a plan. The prison he was in was a low security one, meant for non-magical prisoners. What they wouldn't expect was an organized riot, and that was just what Padraig instigated. Knocking out and stealing a guard's weapon, then breaking into the guard station and armory to arm his friends and let the rest of the prison run wild to cover their escape, the crafty dwarf's skill at hacking into systems let him easily bypass the prison's electronic locks. The general prison riot that ensued led to his escape and fugitive status, but the irish dwarf wasn't about to abandon his cause yet. He returned with his new followers and helped reestablish The LnDS. Now properly armed, the group disappeared into the Irish countryside, mimicking the earlier IRA.

It was this time that Padraig and his group met Sunshine, who pushed them to do something a bit more radical and revolutionary. A strike at the a government owned Corporate HQ( the corporation in question being a local affiliate of Saeder-Krupp) in Galway. This ended up going poorly for them, with almost all the group ending up imprisoned for life for terrorism and revolution against Tir na nOg. Padraig, more than a bit bitter about this turn of events, was forced to flee the country of his birth to North America. He managed to lose the manhunt for him and the remnants of his gang (the former leader had stepped down following his first imprisonment, leaving Padraig as Taoiseach of the Laochra na Déithe Sean) by traveling across the UCAS and Native nations, the few remains of the gang taking up residence in a small town on the outskirts of the Seattle Metroplex.

They had managed to siphon a good amount of money out of the corporation's accounts, through a variety of proxies and laundering applications, to set them up for a good while. Padraig and the group ended up getting a 'club' house and rooming together. They continued running various sorts of hacking and heists in the area, making sure to not return to their clubhouse until for sure the heat was off of them. Now, years after their big attempt at some sort of revolution, Padraig continues to stew about their failure and the one who prompted it, only to receive a strange message on a line that few people knew how to access, and fewer still who weren't imprisoned...

Of course Pádraig Ó Branagáin couldn't refuse to help and old friend, even if she cost him his dreams. Hey, maybe something would even happen to her in the process of this job! And, by all the gods of his pantheon, he had one hell of a debt to collect from her.

  • His gang's clubhouse and practically everything in it. a two story and basement house in the suburbs/outskirts of the Seattle Metroplex.

E.
  • Mementos. Unlikely anyone will get him to show, thus a surprise.

Edit: Finished, tell me if I got all I need, and if it makes sense!

...Jesus Christ. Of course you're accepted. That was a hell of a read.

Are you sure you haven't played Shadowrun before? Because this is a grade A character if I've ever seen one.

Yupo. I've played DnD before, and I felt some inspiration for the character. I'm familiar with the feel and theme of Cyberpunk though, so I kind of applied that to this too.

Ah, okay, I figured you might've played something before. That's the one I haven't played yet, although I'm starting a campaign soon!

Well, welcome to the team! If you have any questions or ideas feel free to bring them up, sometime tomorrow, assuming a few more apps come through, I'll start talking about equipment and the start of the RP so we can get the ball rolling.

Shadowrun doesn't really have a class system. You can do whatever really.

So I'd say yes?

Yes, the classes I listed are just pre existing examples to help you. I'm not binding you to them.

Is it okay if the connection between him and Sunshine involves her bailing him out of getting killed by the Horizon Corporation?

Hey, the connection between Padraig and Sunshine were that she practically enlisted his gang to go hit a major corporate HQ, I think its up to us as long as we keep her characterization fairly consistent.
