Not so much an obstacle so much as a nuisance, and by nuisance I mean a fire brigade sometimes wanders into nearby nations and raises hell.

Here is some info on my new Zeon.

Economically, they are very protective and have harsh restrictions on imports, but they will export anything (I mean ANYTHING) you order and pay for. They could also function as a secure 'offshore' banking location like Switzerland.

They are also extremely hostile to outsiders entering their territory without permission and will probably attack them outright. They also have a slight disdain for humans that have not been modified in some way.

If they do not accept imports, how do they trade with groups or nations that do not have their currency? If currency is not moving via imports, how do other nations obtain any to buy your goods? Also, your nation's ban on imports and border incursions is directly opposed with the objectives of Vimnon Deep Space Exploration Frigates, which go wherever the can and trade info and blueprints for supplies and information. The Vimnon are non confrontational and leave as soon as possilble if asked, but it sounds like your border patrol have a shoot first, ask questions later policy. Wanna RP one of these ships entering your nation's outer borders and the potential idiomatic incident that could cause?

Also, how do the OP/Co-OP(s?) feel about graviton based technology for artificial gravity on ships and maybe something like Cavorite from H. G. Wells' First men in the moon, only way more low-key? Maybe even some non-lethal graviton weapons that either temporarily increases or decreases the gravitational forces to either slow down your enemies or cause them to float like in Mass Effect.

Also, what currency does your nation use? Vimnon use chits representing hours worked instead of a traditional precious metals or fiat money. I almost think, though, that for large scale intergalactic trade it would be better to barter resources instead of worrying about holding lots of currency valuable in one nation and useless in the next. Vimnon "poker chips" would likely be useless in most systems, and only the largest and most influential systems could hope to spread the value of their currency far beyond their borders. Bringing in one luxury good and leaving with another would be best.

Obviously any tech can be pushed to become overpowered, but I am glad we had a similar idea. Actually, your example of Zarya's gun is even more than I was going to take it... I just wanted use grenades with about half that power, larger munitions, and vehicle-mounted cannons for weapons. As for helping with steering in space though, I think some kind of material that produces 'Graviton Shielding' could really make STL stealth in space much more practical, as making adjustable plates coated with the material would allow ships to make course corrections without firing engines, aka running silent. Add some refrigeration panels on the outside of the ship, large and efficient heat sinks, and radiators that push excess heat out slowly/away from enemy sensors, and ships suddenly can measure their silent run times in days instead of hours, and have the added ability of mid-flight course-corrections without giving away their position. Probably for less realistic nations that capability doesn't sound all that impressive, but from a realism perspective, which I am trying to aim towards without obviously being able to completely reach, it at least sounds plausible with physics as we understand them today (minus Gravitons, which are a theoretical particle, and a material that blocks Gravitions 'like light, heat, magnetism, or electricity' to paraphrase Wells.
