XCOM: United Front (OOC / DEAD)

In the year 1947 an unidentified flying object crashed near Roswell, New Mexico. Official reports state that the object was a failed USAF surveillance balloon, but in actuality it was mankind's first contact with lifeforms not of this planet. The UFO and its deceased occupants were transferred to the Groom Lake facility for further research and study. Additional sightings would occur shortly thereafter. In 1962 the Bureau of Strategic Command was signed into action by president John F. Kennedy. Though originally tasked with countering potential Soviet movements on the American continent, the Bureau would instead find itself the first and foremost line of defense during an isolated alien incursion into America's heartland in what would become a serious of publicly unexplained and underreported events. Soon after the then director of the Bureau, Myron Faulke, would seize control of the organization and would establish the precursor to the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit, or XCOM, with significant aid from the United States government. Following the Height 611 incident in Russia's Primorsky Krai provence, and the collapse of the Soviet Union several years later, an international body of nations convened to discuss the possible event of hostile alien contact. This in turn would lead to the signing of the Black Accords in 1993 and the formation of the Council.

Alien sightings would continue throughout the close of the 20th century and afterwards but no further contact would take place until 2011 when a UFO landed in Munich, Germany in what would become an international crisis. German KSK would manage to eliminate the hostile threat but not before losing over half their force, as well as seventy-seven confirmed civilian casualties. This event, while making known the existence of alien life, would lead to XCOM being activated in full force. Two additional incidents would successfully be countered by XCOM operatives that same year. Following a brief hiatus of activity the threat of another incursion is again present and XCOM is on high alert.

The year is 2014 and war is coming.



XCOM: United Front is an RP that loosely follows the events of Enemy Unknown/Within but is by no means a direct relation to either. For all intent and purpose this story is original yet set within an already established universe that has been modified to suit the needs of the RP. That being said, some things may be the same but much more will be different, so do not assume that the plot of the game will 100% match this iteration.

In United Front you will control a highly trained soldier that has been recruited into the XCOM organization. The existence of aliens is now known after the incident in Germany, but the existence of XCOM is not widely publicize, which is to say that this is by all accounts a covert international operation. You will be sent across the world to counter the ever growing threat of the alien menace, and though some structure of a plot exists your actions and failures can very much affect the outcome. There is no set mechanic to how you participate as this RP will be very much story focused. That being said I, the OP, will have a simple method of deciding how effective the enemy is in countering your actions. You may do something similar if so desired, however, this is not required but recommended if one tends to succeed at every twist and turn. Death is a very real possibility and will happen at some point with little remorse. Characterization is key, but enjoyment is the ultimate goal.

Prior knowledge of XCOM is recommended but not required.

• OP/Co-OP reserve the right to deny any application for whatever reason.

• No God-modding or Meta-gaming.

• No directly controlling another player character unless given permission to do so. Minor NPC's, and aliens to a small degree, may freely be controlled within reason. When in doubt, ask.

• Posts are to be a paragraph minimum. One-liners are completely unacceptable.

• Try to use correct grammar and spelling. No walls of text that are not broken into discernible paragraphs.

• Be courteous to one another in the OOC. Be as much of a jerk in the IC as you so desire.

• Be active should you apply. No need to be online 24/7 (as I certainly will not be) but don't join only to become inactive. If you will be gone for any significant amount of time please leave a message stating that you will be gone. Those who do not will simply be killed off at OP's whim.

• No overpowered characters. You can die and every challenge should be just that, a challenge. Actions have consequences, and failure to adhere to those consequences will have the offending character violently (and perhaps humorously) killed with little discussion.

Bio:
John Dalekin was the stereotypical bully growing up in St. Louis, finding fun in mocking the misfortune of others. By the time he reached middle school he had begun channeling this poor personality quirk into his natural competitiveness, playing both football and basketball up to his graduation of high school. The next four years would be spent at a community college to attain a degree in businesses, but failing to find a stable job afterwards Dalekin would instead join the military. It was here that he would find a calling which suited him, and despite his deployments overseas he took joy in taking the fight to someone else.

During a failed push into an enemy camp Dalekin would take command of his unit and would march the soldiers for two days back to friendly lines, all the while withstanding hostile fire. It was this incident that drew the attention of the Council. Following his return back home, Dalekin was approached and offered a new position for a covert operations group. Without question he accepted.

ASSAULT
Specializes in aggressive reconnaissance, flanking, and drawing enemy fire. The first into combat and often the last out, these adrenaline junkies are not afraid to get close and personal and are quite willing to take on the greatest risks. Uses the SHOTGUN and ASSAULT RIFLE.

COMBAT MEDIC
Perhaps the most valued asset of any squad. Can treat and stabilize all but the most lethal of injuries, and as such is best kept from danger when at all possible. Uses the SMG.

HEAVY
Explosives expert with enough firepower to level an entire city block. Can dish out massive amounts of damage in short order at the cost of heavier than average equipment, encumbered movements, and limited effective range. Deadly alone but best utilized as a secondary unit. Uses the LIGHT MACHINE GUN and replaces the sidearm with a potent, multi-purpose ROCKET LAUNCHER.

MARKSMAN
A soldier for any situation. Uses the DESIGNATED MARKSMAN RIFLE.

RECON
Prefers stealth over direct combat and is a master of asymmetrical despite how unfavorable the odds may be. Great at intelligence gathering and often works away from other conventional units. Uses the SMG.

RIFLEMAN
A soldier for any situation. Uses the ASSAULT RIFLE.

SNIPER
An angel with a rifle. Can hit any target with pinpoint accuracy. Uses the SNIPER RIFLE.

SUPPORT
The seldom admired grunt. Carries the extra ammo and is responsible for various roles within a squad, both combat and non-combat related. Uses the ASSAULT RIFLE or SMG, and may often replace the sidearm with a GRENADE LAUNCHER. Two additional non-lethal grenades may be carried.

ASSAULT RIFLE
A highly modified (and modifiable) FN SCAR-H chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO with modular construction, a sturdy composite frame, and a reasonably light weight. Twenty round magazine standard. Selective fire between 3-round burst and full auto. General purpose weapon that is best suited for mid-ranged encounters.

DESIGNATED MARKSMAN RIFLE
Adapted from the M39 Enhanced Marksman Rifle (itself adapted from the M14), the variant utilized by XCOM is both compact yet highly accurate. Chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO and is semi-automatic. Useful addition to any squad.

GRENADE LAUNCHER
The Milkor MGL was chosen for its flexibility in combat, being capable of firing explosive, smoke, and other grenade types. Makes use of the 40x46mm grenade. Is a potential sidearm for the SUPPORT.

HANDGUN
Standard issue. A simple yet powerful sidearm that is useful in a variety of situations. Based on the HK45 Tactical and chambered in .45 ACP. Poor range and limited effectiveness against armored targets.

LIGHT MACHINE GUN
Custom variant of the Belgian M240B. Belt fed, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO, and is capable of shredding most anything caught in its path. Increased rate of fire at the cost of accuracy at longer ranges. Attempts have been made to lighten the frame without compromising the weapon's integrity but the LMG remains quite heavy. Can quickly run dry on ammo and is slow to reload. Best used from an entrenched position.

MACHINE PISTOL
A rapid-fire sidearm, this modified PP-2000 offers great stopping power for uncomfortably close situations.

ROCKET LAUNCHER
The AT4 was chosen for its rugged nature, relatively light weight (for its size), and its ability for rapid deployment in urban environments. XCOM has upgraded the weapon system to make it even more capable, however, the launcher remains a single-shot weapon. The missile is pre-loaded and is inert until armed, thus lowering the risk of accidental detonation. Is a sidearm for the HEAVY.

SAWED-OFF SHOTGUN
A powerful sidearm based on the Kel-Tek KSG, the weapon has been shortened as much as possible to allow ease of handling though at the cost of limited range and ammo capacity. 12 gauge slugs can turn a bad situation into an advantage.

SHOTGUN
Pump-action shotguns were chosen for their reliability in the field. The Mossberg 500 was chosen as the base and, after extensive modifications, is a potent weapon with modular compatibility. 12 gauge slugs can make quick work of anything so long as it's in range.

SNIPER RIFLE
The AX338, chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum, is capable of stopping all but the largest and most armored of targets. Bolt-action, and modified for increased range and accuracy, the weapon is unwieldily and ill-suited for close-ranged engagements, and as such is best utilized at a safe distance.

SUBMACHINE GUN
Though not as popular a weapon as the assault rifle, the SMG is a great choice for close engagements when rapid fire is a must. The UMP45 serves as the base for the XCOM variant and little work has been needed to make it a capable weapon.

COMBAT STIM
A powerful drug cocktail that can temporarily boost a soldier's performance by limiting pain reception, increasing adrenaline output, and improving reaction time. This boost may last upwards of fifteen minutes though exact time varies between individuals of differing body compositions. Severe exhaustion and muscle aches may persist for several days after use. Experimental and potentially addictive.

C4
A useful plastic explosive that can decimate most structures and anyone or anything unfortunate enough to be caught in the blast radius. Enough material is carried in-field for two sizable explosions or, if so desired, one major blast capable of leveling a small building. Wireless remote detonated. Used by the HEAVY.

GRENADE x1
Pull pin, count to three, throw.

GRENADE, FLASHBANG x1
Temporarily blinds and disorients any organic enemy (or ally) caught in the blast.

GRENADE, SMOKE x1
Quickly disperses a thick smoke screen that makes target acquisition nearly impossible by obscuring line-of-sight. Useful for covering squad movements while under hostile fire. Affects both hostile and ally targeting capabilities.

GOGGLES, NIGHT VISION
Night vision goggles that are best used in low-light situations, whether it be at night or in darkened structures. Sudden flashes of bright light can be detrimental to the wearer.

GOGGLES, THERMAL
Thermal imaging goggles that are best used in situations with limited visibility. Enemy heat signatures may vary.

GRAPPLING HOOK
A simple but exceedingly useful tool that can allow for easy vertical movement, especially so in urban environments. A sturdy hook is propelled up to 30 meters straight up using electromagnetic force with a powerful winch allowing quick movement. Battery life is good for three uses at full charge. Used by the RECON and SNIPER.

ENHANCED GRENADE LAUNCHING MODULE (EGLM)
An under-barrel grenade launcher based on the German AG-C/EGLM and used exclusively for the XCOM ASSAULT RIFLE. Grenades are compact and lacking overall effectiveness compared to thrown varieties but can be launched further. Useful addition to any squad. Fires 40x46mm grenades of various types (up to 6 carried).

MEDKIT
Well stocked for almost all situations. Used by the COMBAT MEDIC.

NANO-FIBER VEST
Lightweight and offers additional protection against energy projectiles.

RIOT SHIELD
A specially made shield whose polymer makeup can withstand high levels of heat, however, repeated exposure can and will lead to melting and diminished effectiveness after a brief amount of time. Heavy and not widely seen in the field. Provides mobile cover. Used by the SUPPORT.

S.C.O.P.E.
Advanced fiber-optic scope that aids in target acquisition. Multiple units can allow for sight-lines through obstructions. Delicate internal systems limits effectiveness to a degree.

REAPER ROUNDS
Incendiary rounds that substantially increases a weapon's lethality against unarmored targets at the cost of lower effective range. The ammo can potentially lead to hazardous situations including but not limited to jamming, extreme heating of the barrel, and misfires. Can only be used with conventional ballistics.

RESPIRATOR
A modified respirator unit that can filter out most airborne toxins and can help to prevent strangulation as an unintentional benefit. Limits head movement.

FLOATER
An abomination of flesh and machine, the Floater is a frenzied creature that attacks recklessly with little care of its surroundings. Having had its lower body removed in favor of a sizable jetpack, the Floater can quickly maneuver around the battlefield. Is difficult to engage while airborne. Not very intelligent. Uses the LIGHT PLASMA RIFLE, although the long-range accuracy of the weapon is negated by the alien's carelessness.

Not much is known about the Outsider. Appearing as an armored humanoid, the alien's body appears to be composed of corporeal light with a central core of an unknown crystalline structure, and so long as this core remains intact the Outsider can regenerate indefinitely. Is thought to be the UFO captain. Uses a variant of the LIGHT PLASMA RIFLE.

SECTOID
A somewhat weak alien that is reminiscent to Hollywood's take on little green men. Often found in groups of three or more and possesses limited psychic ability that most often entails one Sectoid increasing another's strengths at the cost of connecting their nervous systems, which at times can be more so a hinderance than a help. Low intelligence and with a pack mentality of sorts when left without a competent leader. Uses the PLASMA PISTOL.

SEEKER
A squid-like machine that is capable of limited flight and sustained active camouflage. Generally suited for reconnaissance and engaging lone soldiers. Uses its four tentacles to strangle its victims but also possesses a internal plasma weapon that is comparable to the PLASMA PISTOL used by Sectoids. Uncertain of the bounds of the Seeker's artificial intelligence though no higher thought processes have been displayed thus far. Found in pairs.

STRIDER
A scout unit that excels at long-range targeting and elimination. Reptilian with a triangular head, four eyes, sharp teeth, and Loreal pits that allow for infrared detection. Tall and well suited for climbing. Uses a ballistic BOLT RIFLE as opposed to the plasma weaponry commonly employed by other extraterrestrials, though has been known to use a LIGHT PLASMA RIFLE for close-ranged encounters. Often found leading lesser aliens. Considered a priority target upon location.

the COUNCIL
A group of sixteen countries that created and fund the XCOM organization. Little else is known about the powerful individuals behind this venture as their identities and source of capital remains unknown. Represented by an unknown spokesman that periodically checks in.

the BUREAU of STRATEGIC EMERGENCY COMMAND
The precursor to the current XCOM organization. Created in 1962, the Bureau was an American anti-Soviet task force that saw considerable deployment during a small alien incursion during the later 1960's and early 1970's. After the signing of the Black Accords in 1993, the Bureau would break away from the control of the United States government to become a founding part of a new international entity on the behest of the Council.

EXALT
A radical group that appeared shortly after the Munich incident espousing transhumanist ideals. This organization is currently under investigation by several governments for terrorist activities.

EXTRATERRESTRIAL COMBAT UNIT (XCOM)
A covert organization that is the premiere anti-alien task force. Given the most advanced equipment, superior funding, and consisting of the most elite of soldiers drafted worldwide, XCOM is a potent force to be reckoned with and stands as the only bastion against this new extraterrestrial threat.

GROOM LAKE
Groom Lake has been a hotbed of conspiracy since its opening during the Second World War. A secret installation for the development and testing of advanced aircraft, Groom Lake would become the primary base for the Bureau of Strategic Command following its restructure in the 1970's. Today it serves as the main HQ of XCOM and houses some of the most advanced research and production facilities in the world. Additional auxiliary bases can be found in numerous Council countries.

RAVEN
An advanced interceptor designed to engaged and destroy enemy UFO's. Utilizing a pulse-engine, the Raven is capable of reaching extremely high altitudes and reaching speeds unheard of in commercial aviation. Carries Avalanche missiles that have so far proven effective against alien armor.

SKYRANGER
A supersonic VTOL that serves as the workhouse of XCOM. Is capable of deploying troops anywhere in the world in only a matter of hours.

Bio:
Coming from a military family it was expected of Mason Reid to enlist once he was old enough, and that is exactly what he did after graduating high school. Joining the United States Army shortly before the Gulf War, Reid was deployed overseas to Saudi Arabia and took part in limited fighting once hostilities commenced, his unit being one of the first to enter Kuwait during the country's liberation. Reid was promoted for his actions. A few years later he would see combat in Somalia when assisting a Delta Force unit several days before the more notable Battle of Mogadishu. Reid would join Delta Force shortly thereafter. In 1994, now a part of Delta Force, Reid would be deployed in a clandestine operation in Bosnia to secure a VIP. A routine mission that was accomplished with little difficulty. By this point Reid had grown accustomed to the military lifestyle, more than willing to risk his life to serve his country, and despite several close calls would show no signs of going back stateside. The remainder of the 1990's would be spent undertaking various military operations. Reid's father would die of a heart attack in 1999 while Reid was deployed in Kosovo.

After 9/11, Reid would, like so many others, be deployed to the Middle East. In December of that year Reid would participate in the Battle of Tora Bora where a coalition of forces failed to capture Osama Bin Laden. SOG operatives took note and, but 2004, Reid had been transferred to the CIA Special Activities Division. Partaking in even more covert operations than he had while in Delta Force, Reid would practically live in the war-torn corners of the world. He was good at what he did so Reid didn't mind. The CIA had its perks, from seeing the world to meeting, and sometimes bedding the locals. Some friends would be made, but given the dangers of the job Reid took to staying distant from those around him so that when he or they inevitably fell there wouldn't be too much to grieve over. Reid would serve under the CIA until 2010 when he was injured by an explosive device in Yemen. He would survive but his military career was over. A spinal injury keeps him from being as active as he once was, and the tendons of his right arm never gained full functionality. Despite his complaints that he could still shoot straight Reid was honorably discharged. Stateside for the first time in a long while, Reid would live close to his mother for several months before being approached by XCOM and, without hesitation, would agree to join.

As a part of XCOM Reid serves at Groom Lake as the base's military commander. Though not a frontline job like Reid would have hoped he nonetheless takes his position seriously if not with a pinch of salt. Though granted access to CLASSIFIED intel, and even having seen the Roswell specimens, it wasn't until the Munich incident that Reid would understand the gravity of the situation. No longer fighting for his country he was now fighting for his species. He aims to win this war no matter the cost.

During his time in England Ashon would gain the attention of the Council who, during this time, were looking for young and gifted individuals. Little else is known about his whereabouts from this point into as recently as 2013 as all information relating to Ashon is CLASSIFIED. It is speculated, however, that he worked with researching various alien specimens across the world.

With the complete activation of XCOM, Ashon was transferred to the Groom Lake facility and given free reign as Head Scientist. It is his duty to better understand the alien threat, a duty that he takes great pleasure in.

During this time Sunday was grow considerably with her skills and abstract thinking. However, shortly after the Munich incident the proposed Lead Engineer of Groom Lake died suddenly. Before his death he had made it clear that he wished for Sunday to take over his place should anything happen to him, and despite some reservations the Council ultimately agreed. Sunday was made Lead Engineer of Groom Lake, and one of the youngest individuals to attain such a status within the organization. The girl begrudgingly accepted this post but continues to feel inadequate.

Bio:

Born in Toronto, Elsa had always expressed interest on music but despite that, her parents never really approved of her interest, and always tried to directed her to be businesswoman or a scientist. Nevertheless, she always wanted to be a musician, even started a band with her as the vocalist. Not quite success, though, as there are many, many indie bands in Canada. But even when her parents are not approving, she won scholarship for the Faculty of Music in University of Toronto, and did jobs as singer at local pub for her living conditions.

Rebellious, even more then when she was teenager, she got almost no opportunities after graduation. Desperate for job and to proved to her family that she could be independent without her family, she went into military. She proved herself to be highly independent, but at the same time being reckless over decision-making. She eventually reformed (sort of) as she grew older and with service in Afghanistan, both in the base, on the field, and when she was part of embassy security. Of course, the potential on her skills and development had gave her the position in JTF 2.

After 2 years of involvement with training in Iraq, she was offered a higher chance to be inside the new and international group of extra-terrestrial threats, something that had been informed inside the Canadian internal military affairs, and she heard of it. She accepted it, if it means it can protect the world.

She has a large intellect and is quite good at learning, adapting, and memorizing in most circumstances. She also has an eidetic memory, better known as a photographic memory, meaning that she remembers any image that she takes in after even a few moments of exposure.

Solid under pressure: Having seen live action before, Amelie is experienced with being under fire and operating and administering emergency medical attention while being in a live firefight, primarily with insurgents in the Northern Mali Conflict, and is able to operate fairly effectively despite a lot of pressure being put on her; in fact, she believes that she works better under pressure.
Weakness:
  1. Mediocre shot: Amelie never became extraordinarily proficient in marksmanship, and struggles most of the time to reliably hit most targets that she sees, especially if they're moving. She prefers to use her weapons defensively only, prioritizing her role as a medic over her role as a soldier, and as such only uses her weapons when absolutely necessary.
  2. Solitary and elitist: Amelie, due to her intelligence and proficiencies, has quite the ego, to a nearly narcissistic extent. She looks down on those that she thinks do a poorer job than her, especially combat medics, and believes that she is innately better than most other people due to her degree and her past experiences. Because of this, she finds it hard to work as a team, and constantly questions the authority of her direct superiors.

Personality: In two words, snobby and elitist. To further that, however, Amelie is a woman who is innately flawed; she is subconsciously extraordinarily self-conscious, and constantly wants to overachieve to gain the admiration and attention of those around her. However, she also cares immensely for those that are in her care, almost maternally, and while not making the best of friends, does take care of those around her despite her supercilious attitude. She has been an overachiever her entire life and ambitiously looks to further both her reputation and her skills.

Skills: Samir is a natural problem solver and 'on the fly' thinker, rarely planning anything out in advance he can rely on his razor sharp wits and tactical awareness to plan out a course of action, often in mere seconds. Being an Ex-Army Ranger means he also has a plethora of military related skills including operation and maintenance of various weaponry, navigation and orienteering, usage of explosives and pyrotechnics, first aid among many others. Samir is also specially trained for Mountain, Urban and Guerrilla warfare, knowing how to manipulate and navigate the terrain for asymmetrical warfare.

Weakness: A little 'twitchy', meaning he can be spooked or unnerved before or during intense engagements or even out of a firefight, and even though he is a quick thinker, his habit of not forming a concrete plan or telling others what he's doing can lead him into more than a sticky situation.

Always generally up to talk and to share stories or to generally chat about anything, rarely lets the worst of a bad situation get him down. Coming from a Muslim family, Samir has shed most of his religions beliefs and adopted a wider outlook on life after travelling around the world, seeking new opportunistic has always been a goal and wouldn't miss out on new experiences for the world. Unfortunately his line of work does generally revolve around taking lives, human or not, but he tries to mentally block the negative and strives for positive thinking.

Bio:

Samir was born at the tail end of a brutal civil war that had rocked the country for years. Born to a low income family consisting of his father, mother and older sister, they were refugees from the prior war which had forced them from their home in Sidon, Samir was born in Tripoli and lived in an apartment block, his mother worked as a nurse and his father sold electronics for various companies, what they earned was little, but enough to support their small family.

Samir was educated enough, many teachers had left the country during the war as refugees and never returned, however educated and literate volunteers helped school children in various parts of the city and Samir was lucky enough to learn to read, write and speak English and Arabic, as well as perform basic maths and history.

Samir worked many various jobs between trying to get an education in his teenage years, such as delivering baked goods, a butchers assistant and an electricians apprentice, he collected scraps of money here and there and was enough to support himself and take the strain of his aging parents, the country was undergoing massive changes still. Waves of patriotism swept across the country, mainly critical of the Syrian military presence resulting from the civil war and again in 2006 the country would be swept into a war with Israel, bombings occured across the nation including several in Tripoli which destroyed several city blocks and imposed yet another struggle for its citizens.

Samir was an athletic and healthy individual which made him a primary candidate for Lebanese Army recruitment drives, in an effort to bolster their armed forces against superior opponents and to ensure security within the nation. Samir resisted at first and refused to enlist, but pressure from his friends ultimately led to him joining, at aged 18 he was officially part of the Lebanese Army and was instantly called to action when the 2008 conflicts unfurled, the Army was called upon to quell the unrest. After this he was selected for the Maghaweer which was essentially the Army Rangers, an elite section of the Lebanese military and passed all the initial tests with flying colours and even through grueling training wasn't dettered. He was also shipped off to france to train with special French Army forces in Mountain Warfare.

Returning to Lebanon, Samir was deployed along the border with Syria, mainly countering the conflict spilling in from the unfolding Civil war, his combat skill has been relatively untested up until thus far, however his next enemy would sure put him through his paces.

A few things for everyone: A) The XCOM rank does not have to match your previous rank. A sergeant could still end up as a Squaddie in XCOM only because he's the new guy on the block. B) We need maybe one higher ranking character (a sergeant) to be the squad leader. Position is open to anyone who wishes. C) I've been sick all weekend and can't focus right now. Will get up my primary App and those for Head Scientist/Engineer tomorrow sometime.

Skills: Very physically strong and imposing, Barbs doesn't seem to lose his stride even with a heavy combat load.
Cool under fire, he's pretty much accepted he'll die bleeding in some field more than a decade ago.
Experience, killing is his business and business is good.
Weakness: Virtually no impulse control, head wounds can do that to you.

Personality: Barbs is gruff, no-nonsense, sarcastic, and too the point. He swears like a fifteen year special operations veteran and is a mean mother fucker. Barbs is also fair, loyal, brave, and willing to put his life in the line for humanity.

Bio: John Barb joined the US Army because he wanted to get the hell out of Ohio but quickly discovered he was actually pretty good at soldering. He applied for Ranger School on a dare from another PFC and was shocked and surprised when he was accepted. It may be Stockholm Syndrome but he views those 61 days of Ranger training to be right up there with his marriage, the birth of his daughter, and his divorce as some of the best days of his life. His 17 year career as a Ranger saw him deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other more classified locations and he was decorated with a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts on his way to the rank of Master Sergeant. A few years ago in Colombia John's section was part of an "advisory" group from the USA tasked with helping train and prepare Colombian soldiers and police to deal with the various cartels and militia groups that threatened the stability of the nation. John and his platoon where "advising" during a government raid on a cocaine plantation during what seemed like a pretty typical operation when they stepped into an ambush. One of the government officials who knew of the raid was more crooked than usual and tipped off the cartel which gave them plenty of time to prepare. Once it looked like mission accomplished the cartel struck back and ambushed the raiding party, killing or wounding nearly everyone involved. Though they were rescued John ended up catching shrapnel from a grenade in his head and spent the next 48 hours comatose.
After a full workup of brain exams and head shrinking it was determined that John had retained full motor function but had lost much of his impulse control leaving him with a bad attitude. He was cleared for duty but less than a month later he punched a Lieutenant in the face after a friendly discussion on which Final Fantasy game was the best turned ugly. Considering his service record and his injuries the powers that be decided not to court marshal him and instead drummed him out into a new international unit that many in the Army's top brass thought was a total joke and now Barbs fights Xenos. Despite three years in X-Com he has only encountered aliens once and most of his time has been spent drilling in weapons and tactics designed for fighting the alien threat.
