Romance of the Three Kingdoms seems a lot more convoluted, but at least the battles and strategies were quite refreshing. Also, I knew who was who thanks to an illustrated version done by a Malaysian painter.

I could probably sustain a short conversation with a cashier, at my current level. It'll be a while before I can read Wikipedia articles in Japanese.

I tried learning German and Russian, but I gave up on the latter. I do get to speak a bit of Chinese dialect here and there, as well as Peranakan Malay with my grandmother, but I'm far from being a polyglot.

PS: I've never heard of that anime. I only know the mainstream Shōnen Jump stuff
