Operation Odessa(Peacekeepers : Oscar)

Postby Altito Asmoro » Sun Aug 07, 2016 1:33 am

As the team began to filter into the briefing room, Jacques stood at the front of the room. A projector screen which displayed a map of Ukraine's Odessa region, was displayed behind him.

He didn't really nervous since he had led operations few times, but considering that now he led a group of new soldiers it will be slightly different, perhaps, even though it is unlikely for them to not be prepared.

"We have a situation in Ukraine," he began. "A pro-Ukrainian political activist in the city of Odessa has been kidnapped last night by supporters of Russia's occupation force." She clicked a button on the remote control in her hand, switching the screen to reveal several photos of well-equipped Ukrainian soldiers and militia alike, posing in front of Russian flags and near few Russian soldiers. Of course, there are also photos of them with Neo-Nazi flags and Nazi salutes, among other things.

"Eyewitness reports from Odessa say the kidnappers are members of the Azov Battalion, which you can see on the screen. The Azov Battalion gained a reputation during the more active stage of the war in eastern Ukraine as having strong associations with Ukraine's far right, and many volunteers from across Europe, and indeed the world, with far right political ideologies are known to have served in this unit. They are well trained and well equipped, and are known to use Israeli weapons produced under license in Ukraine and AR-15 variants alongside the standard Kalashnikovs you expect to find in eastern Europe."

He paused briefly before continuing. "Despite their involvement in the kidnapping, it seems it was done as a more independent action and less with coordinated Russian operations. At the same time, it seems that the ones who did this were a splinter faction within Azov Battalion itself, and thus was not part of Azov Battalion itself. The Ukrainians need our help to find their hostage, and according to our intelligence network, Russians didn't approved of this. When we on the ground, we have the sub-duty for any intelligence we can gather that can prove that the Ukrainians have no involvement, same with the Russians despite what our intel said."

Jacques switched the screen with his remote control, causing the screen to now display a photo of an attractive young woman with long blonde hair. "This is our hostage, Catarina Surkov. 28 years old, graduated with a Master's Degree in Russian history this year, with plans to enter politics and possibly pursue a PhD. Her family has a military and intelligence background, with her father having served in Afghanistan as an KGB agent within the Red Army, and her brother served as an officer in Ukraine's Naval Infantry until Crimea was annexed by Russia, at which point he was transferred to the southern branch. Both men traveled to Donetsk to fight. Her father coordinating with local resistance as intelligence supporter, while her brother transporting logistics. Known to have connections with Azov Battalion, too."

"Meanwhile, Surkov herself has since been critical to Russia's involvement in their annexation and subsequent conflict with Crimea and Ukraine, and advocating for the potential assistance of United Nations for a more pro-active roles. She has also been critical of the rise of Ukraine's far right, believing that pursuing integration with Europe will only cause this problem to grow. It is needless to see why far right paramilitaries would want her gone. Also because of recent death threats and her bravery, she had been regarded as a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, hard to be proven otherwise."

Jacques closed the screen and then turned on the light. "This is a time sensitive operation. The kidnappers seriously believe Surkov to be an agent of the Ukrainian government, and are demanding that the Ukrainian government pay a ransom for her release, or she will be executed in one week. The Ukrainian government is, of course, refusing to do this despite the fact that she is a citizen of Ukraine, citing lacking of money that can be used for more military interventions."

"And this is where we come in. Ukraine's anti-terrorist units have all served in the field, and yet the government does not trust that they would want to rescue a pro-Ukrainian political activist. Of course, perhaps the other reason is because they have been busy and unable to spare more resources, except for a small team of anti-terrorist units for our reinforcement. The local police in Odessa have been working to find her, but so far do not have a confirmed location. However, they currently have one possibility. A week before the kidnapping, a large shipment of ammunition and weaponry was found at the port of Odessa, addressed to a remote castle-turned-military museum at the edge of the city. Some citizens who passed the castle saw a group of armed soldiers with a woman went into the museum. The museum itself is closed at that time, and most staffs and security guards are on holiday at that time, save for 3 staffs and 2 security guards."

I witnessed Russian troops fighting in Syria. I was close to fighting alongside them, and now this? Akarah decided questioning motives here wasn't the best idea, and came up with a better question. He raised his hand, and after being acknowledged, he said, "Sir? There are a number of us who really don't fit in with an Eastern European setting." He gestured to himself, the Bangladeshi, and the Algerian. "How do you propose we operate?"

Jacques looked up to the soldier who asked, named Akarah. One of the newly-selected soldier within the Peacekeepers, he came from Yemen. Syria and Afghanistan were among his experiences on the field, meaning at least he had met with Russians at one point. And that's a question that's always been asked by those who have almost no relation with the operation, and the same similar answers that been given.

"You have a great question, Akarah. Unfortunately the higher-ups within the Peacekeepers decided to gave the same answer to the same question you just asked, as your question...is actually a very common reasons whenever the first operation was started by fresh selected soldiers. My answer is that we should been split up the troops, the one more common with Eastern Europe in general to be the ones from their areas, and so on. But since it is not my authority to do that, UN itself has gives the order for the full team to operate in one operation."

"Of course, we have other...operations that requires more operatives when needed...I'll look for one, more fit with the other half of the team. In the meantime, we can only do the job that the higher-ups require us to."

"Abu, Col. To Answer your Questions. We should have the team wear balaclavas or some sort of face mask and a uniform that hides national/ethical identities. If we go with dark colored cargo pants, black t-shirts, with black plate carriers, with some sort of dark colored thread gear and with a mask or balaclava then we should be fine. After this mission Col. We need to set down and look over uniform options and try to get a option to suit all as best as possible." Joseph said.

"We have the Ukrainians providing us with their intelligence agency to provide us with the language interpreters. Once we arrive at Odessa, which will be provided by transport from this base to Odessa via CASA/IPTN CN-235. I will be there as well, my old age be damned but that's something so I'll be the mission control," answered Jacques in the end.

"Of course. After this, you all have 45 minutes for preparations and stuffs. For the clothing, you'll have it prepared at Odessa right away. Have it listed here and then it will be prepared," said Jacques.

"No more questions, I believe. All other questions will be answered outside the briefing. Dismissed!" and then Jacques went outside the room and into preparation.

Akarah left the room with a bad feeling. Anyone who talks to me over there is going to hear my accent. No matter. He really didn't want to meet this woman they were rescuing. People who are anti-Russia and anti-Putin have a tendency to try and shove it down your throat. Oh, well, if she starts any shit with me, I can shut her up with a cold AK barrel to the back of the head. He knew that would get him in trouble, but he hoped this person would be grateful that an Arab mercenary who served Assad was putting his life on the line to save her life.

William Weber
Briefing Room

William had entered a smaller building located towards the edge of base. As he stepped inside he noticed the breifing had already begun and quitely took his seat in the back of the room. He now looked toward the front of the room where two men stood reading from a paper as several different pictures flashed across the screen. He noticed the uniforms of the soldiers from several of the pictures where those of "Russians" meaning they were going to Ukraine. William had spent sometime in the Ukraine, training for the KSK and even met a Ukrainian Student in Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr. He now saw a young blonde woman displayed yet again in a photo, meaning they would likely be going for a hostage rescue, something William had been trained in, and executed in the field. A walk down memory lane he thought. After the briefing had finished, William noticed one of the soldiers from earlier approach the leader of team, with concerns about his 'ethnicity' and 'if anyone spoke russian.' William now approached the man, who he noticed to be quite young, and Arab aswell. It surprised him at first, excepting an Arab to be part of the team.

But it was an international team, and he knew from experince in operation Anaconda, it could create some problems. But the young man seemed fine and was no doubt a good soldier if he had been selected for the team. William now approached the two men and extended his hand out to the man who lead the briefing Ja-qees? JacqU? read the man's name tag. He shook the hand of the man and spoke "2nd Lieutenant William Weber, KSK. I over heard your concerns about the Ethnicity of certian members of the team, and I feel that dark clothes could help, but we still need to be able to distigush friends from foes by sight." He spoke good english, yet his heavy German accent still pushed through. He paused for a moment now turning more toward the Arab man "As for the Russian, I speak Russian, as for my Ethinity, I am German so I think I can pass in Ukraine, besides what has history taught us about Germans and the far right?" He gave a slight chuckle at the end letting both of the men know he was joking about the German Sterotype. He now waited for a response from the two men, as he noticed several soldiers now leaving, no doubt to prepare for the mission.

Well, dang. Doesn't seem like a pilot will be needed for this. Hope I don't have to sit out the first operation just because of my bloody MOS. I did not leave the Reserves for more sitting around! he thought to himself.

Leaving the briefing and going into preparation, Cyril approached the Jacques.

"Excuse me, colonel sir? What will I be doing in this operation? Because I can go as infantry sir. I trained for it in BCT and with my Reserve unit. Even scored expert on the range, sir."
Cyril hoped this had impressed Jacques enough so even if a pilot wasn't needed, he still might be allowed to go in with the ground team. He anxiously shifted his helmed as he waited for the colonel's response.

Akarah shook the German's hand, offering a smirk. "Pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant Weber. My name is Abu al-Akarah, originally from Yemen, served in Syria and Afghanistan in sabotage operations against ISIS and the Taliban." That was all he wanted to say, as he was still uncomfortable disclosing his real service in Syria. "I am not the most fluent in Russian, but it's enough to pass in a country that predominantly speaks the language. My English is better than my Russian, and I speak one or two words in German. Naughty words."

Corporal Moustafa Bouzagiti
Oscar Team
The Peacekeepers

Moustafa entered the briefing room just as the briefing began, and sat down as he listened to Colonel Moreau’s analysis of the situation. Unlike some of the special forces guys, Moustafa was not accustomed to the life of hostage rescues and hit and run missions. Of course, serving in places like Mali and the Central African Republic had meant he was often roped in on more impromptu operations of a similar nature, but they were not executed with the same degree of precision. For a period, Moustafa had served with a detachment to the French Navy, responsible for ship-to-ship boarding actions, which had involved a greater level of tactical awareness and training.

But the mission sounded relatively simple. Of course, post-training, this was a relatively safe mission that would give the team some experience of working together. But Ukraine had greater worries than this hostage rescue, and the locals may not be forthcoming with their support. Al-Akarah raised the question of what would happen to those that were not experienced with Eastern Europe. Moustafa’s main, and really only, operational experience of Eastern Europe was serving with NATO’s Kosovo Force. This had not meant combat experience per se, though, as the role was mostly ‘peacekeeping’, and backing up security forces where necessary. It did involve some counter-insurgency and anti-smuggling work though, and it had given a good grounding for the process of ‘winning hearts and minds’ that was so vital in modern warfare.

With the briefing over, Moustafa had to return to his dorm and prepare his equipment for the mission. Clothing was to be listed and prepared in Odessa. Besides that, Moustafa prepared his weapon – a regular FAMAS rifle, the service rifle of the French Army. He had worked with it for ten years or so, knew it inside out. He trusted it enough, and was not prepared to take on a newer, fancier weapon system, for fear it could go wrong at the crucial moment. Moustafa had a small black rucksack, and put in it a silencer and flashlight attachment for the FAMAS. He also holstered his preferred sidearm, the Sig-Sauer P225. He had used that in his brief period as an officer with the Armed Forces of Malta, and had trained with it frequently on the ranges and in exercises.

Angela Ziegler entered the briefing room and sat down at the back. This was to be her first mission with the Peacekeepers, and she wanted to never best. As the briefing started, she listened to the information. The group was heading to Ukraine to rescue a woman named Catrina Surkov, who was kidnapped by members of the Azov Battalion. The area where they were going to was dangerous, since it was embroiled in the Ukrainian Civil War.

As Angela sat and listened to the briefing, she decided to think about what equipment she needed to bring. As it was a hostage situation most likely, she needed her primary weapon suppressed. She was contemplating on bringing explosives, but was having trouble on thinking of a benefit.

As the briefing ended, Angela silently got up and headed back to her room, where she would silently prepare herself. Clothing was to be prepared in Odessa, so she didn't worry about that. Angela picked up her SG 550, attaching a suppressor to the barrel of the gun. If she needed to, she could take t off but for now she left it on. She holstered her P250, and then looked at her Panzerfaust 3. She nodded, grabbing it and holding it close to her. She decided to bring the launcher with her, as it could be of some use. Holding both the SG 550 and Panzerfaust 3 she left her room and entered the hallway.

Jacques shifted to Cyril. There may be a use for a pilot in this mission. "Well, this is still an option by the Ukrainian authorities, but they managed to know the exact, or similar, description regarding whatever helicopters Azov has, and they have one in case it is needed. So we may need you to fly the helicopter to the castle and then observe the situation. Acting as in you are in Azov, they are not strange to the concept of foreign volunteers to Azov."

"Just...bring the helicopter safe, okay? Peacekeepers can replaces it in case it got destroyed, but we would like to keep our budget in check. Bureaucracy stuffs."

Evander Dalton sat silently through the meeting, then rose out of his seat upon the call of "dismissed", looking at his watch and taking a note of the time; Evander didn't know any of his fellow operatives, and it might be a bad idea to rush into combat with people he didn't know. Evander didn't like the idea of relying on anyone he didn't know for a fact he could trust, but he knew no one in the armed forces would ever give a damn what he liked unless they were addressing hm as "sir".

Evander grabbed his gear, a M39 Enhanced Marksman Rifle with a scope for taking out his enemies from extreme distances, and a flash suppressor, since the muzzle flash would be a dead giveaway of his location, especially if he had to fight in the dark. Evander also brought his trusty revolver, a Smith and Wesson Model 686, and a few tracer rounds in case he got separated from the rest of the group.

Evander returned to the area just outside the meeting room, sitting down and mentally going over what he would do if various things went wrong, glancing at his watch on occasion, waiting for the operation to commence.

"Understood sir." He turned away, unable to suppress a smile. Cyril went outside, going over to the hangar where the Black Hawk was parked, and grabbed a green canvas Army bag from the cockpit, which contained everything he had brought with him onto the base. He pulled out his NV goggles, survival knife, M4 Carbine, M9 pistol, and a book. He placed the rest of his things in an empty locker he found in the barracks. Then, reading in the pilot's seat of the Black Hawk, Cyril waited for the operation to start. At the same time, he was trying to formulate a story to tell the Azov for if and when they contacted him.

Satory Base.
Fareed had been silent during the briefing. In truth he would plan the operation out in his mind and never really speak on it. However, he did feel the idea of the C295 deployment would make it easier for the Battalion to spot them out - they are susceptible to AA fire. He said nothing ok the matter, and walked to the barracks with Akarah. He suited up, outfitting his SCAR with an ACOG sight, as well as a laser and silencer. He had used the SCAR and trained with it in his last few days with the SWADS and preferred it over the M4 and BD-08.

He outfitted his CZ with a silencer and nothing else. By now, he was fully outfitted and the thoughts of using the C295 worried him further. He went to Joseph, in hopes of asking him to change his mind. "Sir. I do not think the C295 airdrop is a good idea."

Joseph grabbed his M39 with 4x ACOG Scope, his pistol, and his 3 melee weapons, as well as his plate carrier, his half-face mask, and a couple spares, all mask had a smiling lower skull face on it.

He got back to briefing room and then Fareed walked up to him and said something about a airdrop.

"Fareed, we are not going to be doing a air drop, but flying into a Air Port. We could do a Air drop but some of use like Abu are not certified for that yet. Any thing else you have any other questions."

"No sir." Fareed said. He felt stupid. Not an airdrop. He thought. "Sir, please do notify me when we se off." He said, as he set off for the barracks.

He forgot his knife.

Former Kapteeni, Erika Ilomäki had a rather nasty headache. Her trip into Satory Base had been a long one. Long sleepless trips are always problematic, but are even more so when that trip ends in a lot of paperwork and martial dick waving, before finally being allowed into base and assigned a bunk. As a result Erika was not exactly feeling her best when she walked into the briefing room moments before the briefing. When it was revealed that the operation would be done in the Ukraine, Ilomäki, who had before then been awake enough only to appear professional, the mention of the Ukraine had earned her attention. Ukraine had been the latest victim of Russian Imperialism, first losing the Crimean peninsula, and now fighting for control of the Don-bass Region. She felt deeply for the cause of the Ukrainians, they had been victims of the Russians, far longer than the peoples of her own homeland, and now the Great Bear was coming once again for the Ukrainian State. When seeing reports from the Don-bass war, she couldn't help but think of Kitee in the same straits, ruined by war, occupied by Russians. She remained silent through the briefing, preferring to keep her interior to herself, such musings wouldn't be becoming of a soldier to reveal anyway. After the briefing she quietly got up, hoping nobody would notice.

Jacques was inside his room, mixing his glass of water, as he observed the upcoming operation. While the aircraft is ready, the operators may or may not been ready for the operation and perhaps some still preparing.

The operation is not the hardest but still must be cautious considering the splinter faction comes from Azov Battalion, and the intel provided him that the enemy won't be as many as he though, probably 30 at most. It just came, of course. He went to the armory after drank the water, where he picked up his own gears. He is too old for field operation, of course, but that doesn't mean he won't be there. More as a mission control.

He took his HK UMP and Mac Mle 1950, he went along to the airfield, where the CASA/IPTN CN-235 while the operators already on the airfield as well.

"Alright, operators. We will soon be arriving as Odessa. There will be few new information. First, the splinter faction is a very small one, in fact there are reports that it is between 20 to 30 people, but that is an unconfirmed report, but we must not let down our guard. Second, Chief Master Sergeant Joseph Bridges, will lead the team on the field while I act alongside Ukrainian intelligence as mission control."

"Now," as he glanced to the aircraft and then to the operators, "before we go inside the plane and to Odessa, is there any question?"

Angela cleared her throat, and looked up at Jacques as he spoke of the plan. In one hand, she held her SG 550, and in the other was her Panzerfaust 3. As he finished speaking, Angela asked a question.

"Will there be a use for a Panzerfaust?"

Akarah gave Angela a surprised look when she said "Panzerfaust". "Inshallah," he said to her, which means "God willing", in Arabic. "I really hope not. I've seen Russian tanks. Hell, I've rode them. Some of them are close to indestructible. No RPG can penetrate their armor, at least not American-made ones." He figured she'd be confused by him--either by him himself or what he was saying--so he gave her an innocent smile.

"Akarah that Rocket launcher she carries was made in 1992, it'll give the T-70s trouble, and it is a pain. In the ass for the T-90s."

"This is the first Panzerfaust I've seen in my whole life," Akarah said, "The only RPGs I've seen are Russian ones and those American ones that ISIS and the FSA use. Where I come from, we still use Soviet-era weapons, and they wreaked havoc on ISIS, FSA, and the Taliban." He held up his AK-47. "This baby is almost thirty years old and it took out an FSA man with an M4." He smiled again. "I'd like to see what that Panzerfaust can do."
