Purgatory: The City at The Edge of No Where.Name:Geoff Breckart
Age: 36
Years in Purgatory: 62
Occupation: A Private Detective, he tries to help people reconstruct their memories like Crime Scenes more than anything.
Prior Occupation: New Jersey Police Department, Detective.AppearanceCharacter Bio:
Born in Minnesota to a small Family of three. This was about as much as he knew about his childhood, not if it was good or bad or anything at all. The small details were foggy, but from what he heard from other people, he knew alot more about himself than some others did. He wasn't thankful, what he did know he could live without.
Geoff moved to New Jersey a short time after the Second World War after his time in the Military serving in Europe. He was spared the fighting in the Pacific against the Japanese but by the time they had even looked at him for it, the Bombs were dropped and the war was over. He made it back home in the United States and using the benefits of the U.S Military he went to School for Law. Instead of becoming a Lawyer he instead moved to New Jersey and joined the Police Force as a lowly Patrol Officer. He quickly rose through the Ranks, but one day he made a connection most people where he worked would never understand or catch.
An Arsonist was on the loose and while Guarding a Crime Scene of a burned down House he noticed something shimmering in the Moon light. Picking it up out of the ash, he noticed it was a Dog Tag, belonging to someone he knew, but the name was again lost to him currently in Purgatory. There was a break in the case, and one of his former Sergeants were burning down houses belonging to former Commanding Officers who sent him into impossible situations time and time again. Geoff was promoted to Detective and served for years before his untimely fate.
What would do him in was a Serial Killer, the evil and rare of society itself. Their Victims were Woman missing their Ring fingers, all Married, all happy with Family. He held no sympathy for the dead most of the time during his career to avoid sadness, but this somehow made him feel. He couldn't remember why. The profile for the case seemed full proof; White Male, Strong, Introverted and scared of Women, possibly low income. They were wrong, and it costed him his life when all he could remember when returning to a Crime Scene was a Woman, a Gun and three holes through his chest that are still there in his clothing. He didn't expect it. Now he walks Purgatory.
Now in this place, this land of supreme darkness, he tries his best to do what he was doing when he was alive. He tries to help souls piece together their memories, help them understand who they were when they were alive. He had the privilege to know his life before death, some weren't as lucky. Sometimes he does work for Purgatory City and Amber Foust when someone ends up dead or missing even though most of the time they stumbled into Limbo willingly or unwillingly. But for most of the time he's searching for his own Killer, not for revenge, but for knowledge. He needed to know what happened to him for sure, was he buried? Who missed him? Or even he hoped he would find a witness to his murder, hoping they would remember something. But so far, he has had no leads in his time he was in Purgatory.
Personality: Geoff is a calm, quiet, relatively uncaring person, some might even view him as cold. But really he's just always thinking about something. He hasn't stopped doing this since he's entered Purgatory, so he can only assume this was how he was. He remembers being more relaxed around people he knew well and even cracking, what even he calls bad, jokes. But because Detectives are usually hailed as incredibly smart and in other cliches, he acts like a Comic Book hero from some "True Crime" book to mess with people sometimes.
However, on his bad side, he hates people with high expectations of him. He doesn't treat the death of people the same as someone normally would, he's seen dead bodies all his life in all sorts of ways. It's become relatively normal, but he remembers being surprised sometimes at the brutality of some people.
How much do you Remember?: Geoff knows he had a Family, was Born in Minnesota and that he Served in World War 2. The war was foggy and fragmented, he thinks he got wounded at some point. It gets fragmented and foggy, but then he remembers for sure how he got his job, his schooling and training and for sure with detail how he was killed.
He mostly remembers the big things, but not the small things, which is ironic for his job title, that of which has not been lost on him.
Likes and Dislikes:
Likes: His Job, his Friends and Family he doesn't remember, solving puzzles, the quiet, his new found relationship with money, the color Yellow.
Dislikes: High expectations, Modern Technology from what he's heard of it, Horses, not remembering his Friends and Family, not knowing what's happened to his body and Criminals with no motivation for their actions.
Alignment: Neutral Good
Theme: Negative.
Accept the Rules?: [ ] Yes [X] No
If no, reason: the Orders tho.
RP Sample: Errr.
short summary: A War Hero Detective for hire in Purgatory City from the 50s helping people figure out their past with the goal of finding his killer and figuring out for sure what happened to him. Occasionally takes jobs from the local "Government", so he has a Professional relationship with Amber Faust and other dissidents of the City.

How do secret societies take traps? Well, I am fine with it, just know conreacting with a devil means you do not go to purgatory, you become shish kebab for a demon.Nea Videssos wrote:Saleon wrote:I hope it don't, I don't want to lose you people. and how is the vigilante cop going, sin?
Yes, he is fun, and the app is going reasonably well. That said, I had one character idea before, and now I've inadvertently given myself some more ideas, creating indecision and chaos where before... there wasn't quite so much. My first idea was essentially a Victorian noble trap who already had some occult leanings during life, courtesy of some family ties to groups like the Theosophical Society and the Golden Dawn (not the Greek far-right political party of the same name, that adores the Nazis and wants to remove kebab) in the late 1800s, when investigation into paranormal/spiritual stuff, and various secret societies/mystical groups were popping up in great numbers, with the likes of Crowley, Blavatsky, Gurdjieff and various others around. Of course, that's not the only idea I have.

Also, donner, et. al. I will get to your chars in ~4 hrs, at work, but will return. This also includes updating the dramatis personae. If I do have time, maybe on break, the best I could do is check on apps. No updating the dramatis either way.
contracts mean they eat your soul, so yes. You don't need a contract for magic in purgatory. There is less distance between purgatory and hell, so their powers can be more overt. As long as a human prepares the ingredients, chants, circles, they can call on magic from demons. Angels prefer to guide rather than force their hand in purgatory, so no angel magic.Nea Videssos wrote:Saleon wrote:How do secret societies take traps? It would depend on the secret society in question, I suppose.
From what I'm getting, does the way contracts work mean that someone who used them to get magic in life can't end up in this purgatory place (i.e. the setting locale for the RP), whilst those who begin first using magic via contract in purgatory are fine?
no knowledge of the concept, I will just say trapping is ill-advised. A mirror will not hold them for long, and stronger demons will just not be affected.Republic of the Cristo wrote:Question, is the way you trap a demon in real life ( according to the occult ) the same as it is here in Purgatory? there... wow, that is some mistake I made. There are none. Maybe some form of exorcism type power based off of religious faiths, Buddhist, Christian or otherwise. Outside of that, no. It is contracts on earth. black magic in purgatory.Nea Videssos wrote:Saleon wrote:contracts mean they eat your soul, so yes. You don't need a contract for magic in purgatory. I think you also mentioned some other forms of using magic, too. In the OP, you said contracts are just one of the ways (albeit few ways) in which magic can be obtained in the real world. I assume there are others, then?

If it's just wake up some where (like a dark alley) were I can have him get into a fight in the first post with NPC's?

hmm, I will allow it. *waves magic hands and poofs it into existence.

it could be an unsuccessful cult that tried to, instead of contract a demon, fully summon one... I would advise, though, against having your character be a villain trying to summon a demon in purgatory... you could... but I would rather people try and be a part of the group, and demon summoning might be on the no go list.Nea Videssos wrote:Hmm... I'm thinking now that that occultist character idea is probably not going to work out, considering he can't be in the RP if he'd used magic whilst alive.
