Might I suggest a faction with a mostly robot army and workforce? I don't think it would quite fit with what I had in mind to have an entirely robot faction.

It's a classic story. To save on money, they used automated colonies administered by one very powerful AI to mine minerals from the edge of the Galaxy. The AI stays there too long and goes a bit... Sentient, and decides destruction is too much fun.
