The Doors Between Worlds

Somewhere, is, from a certain perspective, everywhere. A room in a house isn't really separated from another room, merely thought of that way because mankind has built his society in compartments. Air flows between rooms, light, and there are cracks under every door. All one has to do to get from one room to another is open the door. A door may be hidden, or locked, or barred in steel, but at the end of the day all one has to do is open that door, and the other room will beckon the curious.
Something much akin is the nature of the universe. Or, rather, might be the nature of the universe. Ask any fanatic, conspiracy theorist, or literary lunatic, and they will be able to detail to you in great depth a world that exists that is not our own. Perhaps magic is real, as near and dear as science to us. Perhaps the rules of the cosmos are somewhat different, and men can fly like birds because gravity doesn't cling to them as tightly. Perhaps humanity is just one race amongst many that calls a world, any world, home. These worlds are conceived of in the mind of every fiction writer, every child that believes in dragons.
But what if those fancies were true? And all we needed to do to get to here from there, was open a door?

Welcome, traveler, to the Doors Between Worlds. How you got here in the first place is really quite irrelevant to me- far more important is the fact that you are, indeed, here. You took the right door, the door that took you to where my own little world has been formed, a transit point between your world and many, many others. I have walked through a lot of those doors, but I am just one man. There are far more doors than I could ever explore, even if I wanted to spend my entire eternity looking through each one for a mere moment. There is a mystery too, about these Doors, one I would like you to help me unravel. Here, have a spreadsheet. I've taken the liberty of running up a few get-to-know you questionnaires so we really know what you're about, and if I need to kick you back to where you came from or if I should let your sordid self hang around here at the Center.

Mhm. Okay. The doohickey in the corner is reading you as a Class One Multiversal. Well, technically not the corner- up there in the tree. It's the best place I could find for it to get a bead on all of you mainliners without interference from any transits still coming in. What does that mean? Eh, I'll explain later. You're human, or very nearly so. But you made it here, which means something too. The fritzengruber's measurements mean that you, too, have the spark of a Door-Opener in you. Not everybody has it. Probably, oh, one in a hundred that do ever actually make it anywhere. And most of those end up eaten or frozen or blasted or fried as soon as they step through a Door, because honestly, in an infinite universe of infinite universes, almost anywhere someone stops off at random isn't very healthy for your squishy carbon-based bodies. But you made it here, which means you've already survived your most important journey, the first one!
