The Burning Sun wrote:Here we go. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is a bad idea...Name: Miku Akatsuki
Quote/Motto: I didn't ask for any of this. You didn't ask for any of me, either, but did I ever ask you about that?
Affiliation: Very nominally a hero, insofar as she will oppose villains when directly confronted.
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Appearance:(Image)
Dimension/Universe: Em...Earth? If superpowers are common there?
Birthplace and Nationality: Kyoto, Japan. Japanese.
Abilities:
- Barrier Manipulation - She can create, modify, or destroy anything that conceptually counts as a "barrier." However, her ability to modify existing barriers is extremely limited, and barriers she creates are generally stationary and not geometrically complex. On the other hand, they are very sturdy, able to withstand most outside tampering and all but the most focused and destructive attacks. Barriers can come in many forms, ranging from semi-visible force fields in combat situations to enchantments placed on existing barriers that, say, prevent certain people from passing through a door or entering a designated area(such static barriers require some sort of physical anchor, be it a wall or magical beacon).
- Border Manipulation - A subset of the aforementioned power that gives her some control over the conceptual borders of things. Although it's mostly used to define the limits of static barriers, it also allows for long-distance-only teleportation, achieved by distorting the border between 'this' area and the 'that' area so that they are next to each other.
- Seals and Exorcism - This is where most of her offensive power comes from. By channeling her power through certain paper sealing talismans, she can create several different effects, all of which tend to have something to do with barriers, sealing things, or exorcism.
- Red - Freezes a designated target in place, though its strength degrades rapidly.
- Yellow - When placed in the world, it acts as a sort of Taser trap, temporarily stunning and disorienting those struck by its lightning field. When channeled in regards to someone trapped by a Red talisman, it does much the same thing to them, only stronger and at a distance.
- Blue - As long as Miku continuously channels this talisman, it produces a translucent bubble of variable diameter around itself. Those inside the bubble are completely invisible to the outside world and, though immune to its effects, cannot affect it in turn.
- Green - Removes bindings, curses, snares, traps...
- Purple - Her only way to actually incapacitate someone. If she can physically walk up to you and stick this talisman onto your person and keep it there for several seconds while she channels it, you deserve to have all the latent energy in your body forcibly ripped out, twisted and corrupted, and reflected back in. Suffice it to say that anyone who endures that will not be fighting on their own for a long time, though anyone actually hit by that was probably not capable of fighting in the first place.
Weaknesses: Has issues actually dealing damage to things. She also has trouble defending against attacks that can bypass her barriers, such as: Teleportation, Psychic powers, etc. Additionally, she is physically frail and has terrible stamina, having spent a very large portion of her life inside her bedroom.
Bio: Many years ago, during the age of feudal Japan, there lived one of the first superheroes - a shrine maiden, blessed with the power to protect the innocent and banish creatures of evil. She lived a long and illustrious life defending the people against such creatures, but as she grew old and feeble, she looked into the future and and worried. Who would rise against the monsters, the marauding warlords, the villains yet unborn? Haunted by this specter of the future, she prayed to the gods she had devoted her life to, seeking some kind of solution. Because this was back then, when gods still watched over the earth, they listened, remembered her years of service, and granted her prayer.
From now until the end of time, it was proclaimed, your soul will be reborn, just as your blood is passed down through the ages. You will live and live again, for as long as their is darkness there must always be light.
And so it was. Through generation after generation, one of her descendants - always female - would find themselves blessed with the powers of their renowned ancestor(and perhaps a little more) and rise up to fulfill their duty. In this way, balance was upheld for thousands of years, and everything was nice and peachy.
Unfortunately, being a hero is a dangerous occupation, and shrine maidens are traditionally sworn to celibacy. Combine this with the need for direct female descendants, as well as the high mortality rate in pre-industrial civilizations, and one can see why, in time, the Maiden Soul began to stumble, appearing only intermittently and for several long stretches not at all. Eventually, sometime in the 1840's, it stopped appearing altogether - perhaps sensing the arrival of Matthew Perry and the heroes of the west. It might have stayed dormant forever, with the original ancestor's blood spread too far and too wide to host it, if not for a chance encounter in the early 1970's between two distantly related but otherwise normal Japanese students. Twelve years later, a girl named Miku was born, family name Akatsuki. In the beginning, she seemed normal enough, but as she grew older, went off to school, and became more independent, her parents started noticing strange things...
Not that she had any powers yet, dear god no. Rather, she was quickly becoming what Americans would dub a 'nerd,' and what the Japanese called 'outsider.' Everyone's heard of them by now - antisocial, obsessed with video games, cartoons, and other fantasy worlds - anything, really, as long as it wasn't related to reality in any way. Definitely not the kind of person one would imagine receiving the raw power of the Maiden Soul, aged and empowered by thousands of years and the gifts of other superhuman relatives. Indeed, when echoes of it began manifesting itself in her early teens, she rejected it completely, throwing herself ever further into her fantasies in an attempt to escape.
Alas, it was not to be, and at age 15 she found herself bundled off to the mountains, forced to study and train beneath wizened old hermits, mystics, and other such people. She hated it. She hated it so much, as a matter of fact, that one night, a little more than a year after her first arrival, she grew so fed up with the ordeal that she somehow destroyed the entire temple, despite her lack of skill and the defensive nature of her abilities. Sent home at once, the relieved Miku delightfully exiled herself into her room once more, where she remained for nearly another year before her parents worked up the courage to kick her out for the second time, this time all the way to the burgeoning Academy. Obviously, they completely ignored her protests, along with the Academy's that she'd be arriving in the middle of Christmas Break, and so when she did eventually arrive, it was with a burning determination to not make the best of a golden opportunity and escape as soon as possible.
Only the gods can tell whether that will happen or not, and, as previously mentioned, they're no longer quite so willing to speak.
How long they've been at the Academy Newly arrived.
Personality: Miku is highly irascible and slightly antisocial, in that while she doesn't fear social interaction, she doesn't much care about making friends or not hurting others' feelings. She has the curious tendency of interpreting others' words as exactly as possible while still preserving their meaning, and since she also is entirely incapable of employing tact, she will not hesitate to call others out on the slightest mistake of speech or lack of precision, whether intended or not.
Reasons for Joining: Left previous place of training in Japan.
Additional Notes: In typical nerd fashion, Miku detests unnecessary physical exercise. She also isn't all that enthusiastic about breaking out the seals, though she won't hesitate to summon lots of glowing force fields at the slightest provocation. When she isn't locked in her room playing vidya gaems, she can probably be found sitting in the corner of a quiet cafe with a cup of tea, and perhaps a book.
Optional Theme Song: If I find one.
