"OK, thank you. Please keep me updated about Bonnie's progress." Paul Clark put down the phone. He just finished a call with the head of the National Weather Service. Hurricane Bonnie just made landfall in New England. It looked like Boston was going to get hammered. Paul knew that the FEMA bill needed to get passed to ensure that disaster relief efforts were equipped properly. He flipped on the TV in his office to watch the news. Paul saw Senator Strong on CNN advocating for the passage of the FEMA bill. Paul assumed that Strong would make the rounds on all the cable networks to talk about the FEMA bill. That meant that Paul had to take care of things behind the scenes.
Paul opened up his laptop and open his email. He found the contacts for every member in the Democratic Senate Caucus and started typing...
Fellow Senate Democrats,
Let me be clear, what I am about to ask you is not a request, it is a demand. Hurricane Bonnie is about to wreck the East Coast, but the FEMA bill is still stuck in the Senate. I am not exaggerating when I say that there are lives at stake. I recognize that the removal of the bill to declare war on ISIS is a prerequisite for any negotiations on the FEMA bill. I am all for having a lively and productive debate on the matter at the appropriate time. However, the FEMA bill needs to be passed now. Every hour that goes by without passing the bill costs millions of dollars in damages. It will be a moral and political failure if my fellow Democrats fail to respond quickly to a natural disaster. I know that some Senators are wrapped up in campaigning right now. If a Senator running for president fails to provide support in passing the FEMA bill, I will not endorse him or her before the New Jersey primary.
