Tonight gave us our first and best look at the Vice-Presidential candidates on stage, and while both performed in their own way, the true victor is harder to decide.
Senator Havich took a definitive lead early in the debate. The first question was on whether they felt ready to stand up and take the place of the President in the worst-case scenario, and while Denver suggested his radio experience could help in the transition, Havich spoke on his timeline of leadership, including in the military and NASA, and the critical nature of being able to step up in dangerous times, which he stated he had the ability to do. The debate started on foreign policy, Governor Denver suggesting putting pressure on China to help counter shipments to North Korea, while Havich suggested that North Korea should be faced directly, but highlighted ISIS as the greater threat, promising decisive and quick action to destroy them. Denver countered, saying that ISIS would be eliminated by 2018 by Iraqi and Coalition forces without U.S. effort, and that not focusing on North Korea could lead to disaster, a nuclear attack in San Francisco Bay. Havich grew more heated at this point, and asked how many terrorist attacks Denver was willing to allow to happen in two years, and asking how reducing North Korean coal supplies was supposed to halt their nuclear program.
The debate turned towards domestic policy, Denver's forte. Havich gave a brief statement of opposition to the RLASA, saying it could risk people's retirement funds, which Denver countered with a scathing rebuttal, accusing Havich of only caring about state's rights "when it means telling gays they can't marry and saying women don't have a right to choose." calling his intention to stay the course not a plan, but a "cop out", insisting that healthcare was a right. The verbal jousting continued across the interim, Havich accusing Denver of being "selfish" for his "pet theories". Denver said Havich's "one-size-fits-all" approach was a failure, and criticized him on same-sex marriage-Havich retorted that Denver would sacrifice people's retirement funds for "socialist experiments."
As the pair moved on to a question about no-fly zones, Havich endorsed the concept but criticized President Winston's handling of it, with a side criticism of Denver's policy to "set back and let [ISIS] run free." Governor Denver gave a brief statement of support as well, but used the opportunity to attack Havich on an "inflated" ego, calling his statement false. Havich reasserted that Denver had made that his policy earlier in the debate, and accused him of making personal attacks while Havich offered criticism on the plans' affects on the American people. The Senator praised his work across the aisle, and said his ticket was for all Americans.
When asked to name their greatest accomplishments, Governor Denver cited putting restrictions on special interests, and dodging Democratic roadblocks, and thanked the moderator sarcastically for allowing him to self-indulge, saying Havich had been doing it all evening. Havich countered with a lament that he had hoped for a debate on policy but had to deal with constant character attacks. He stated as his own proudest moments his time soldiering in Afghanistan.
The candidates were then questioned on controversial members of their own parties. Havich rejected Governor Williams' comments on Muslims, saying he'd met "saints and sinners" from everyone, citing his service in the Middle East, and suggesting both a stringent vetting program, but allowing refugees, and suggested fast-tracking translators who had helped U.S. military forces. Denver was asked to defend Governor Jackson, and said that his policy was flawed, but praised his "commitment to his ideals"
In closing, Governor Denver promised that Walton would defend the Constitution, ease the heavy responsibility of parenthood, and defend the right to one's own fate and choices, saying the Progressive Party was formed in a time of division, but promised "new enlightenment" and coexistence. Havich thanked his opponent, the moderator, and the crowd, stressing the importance of informed voters in a democracy, and drawing out a distinction between the choice between a more leftist version and doubling-down of Winston's policies, and a chance to reform government, and offer a way for all Americans.
Receptions on the debate were mixed, with viewership down significantly from the Presidential debate, though that is not uncommon. Polls and expert opinions remained divided on the victory, the match generally inconclusive-some gave the advantage to Havich on policy, others criticized him for veering from the ticket and leaned towards Denver. Regardless of the outcome, the second-in-lines have had their say-now all that awaits before the White House is the final Presidential debate in New Hampshire in just under one week-and then the final stretch.
