Oval Office

1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW
Washington D.C.

"F$!K"

Winston slammed down on the phone.

"Sir, wha-"

"Oppen, it's done. The woman finally agreed."

"Then why th-"

"Because of this mess, of this disaster!"

"We could blame it on Cain, he's perfect..."

"Go. Go."

The man left Winston, poor Winston, banging his head against the desk of the Oval Office. Muttering something incohesive. Muttering something. Perhaps it was nothing. Though before Oppen left, he thought it had been a prayer.

"A broken man..."

Official Statement from the President of the United States

Hello my fellow Americans. I am writing this as I believe it is better for me to be removed from the public eye and conduct a silent transition. That transition being the presidency. Yes, I am officially going to submit my letter of resignation at 6:00 eastern time within the Oval Office in two days. The reasons being is that I believe that my administration conducted actions that resulted in a distrust with the American People and put the reputation of this country at stake as well as its safety. While I am not at liberty to specify details, I assert full responsibility as it is the Winston administration. Therefore, I believe it is right that it is I that leave this place, the seat of our Government.

It is with a heavy heart that I do this but I understand that it is necessary for our country to move past its mistakes as quickly as possible. And I also understand that it is best that the truth is told. That is why, as my last action, I have instructed the Justice Department to appoint a special prosecutor to lead an investigation into my administration's actions from the very first day I took office to the present day. It will include an full look into every department, every Secretary, and every other top-level official.

To find someone that is both fully able to take on this responsibility, I have chosen the Solicitor General of the United States and a declared independent with an impressive legal history, Mr. Kevin DeAngelo. He is an appropriate choice and I believe he is more than prepared to ensure that every piece of my administration comes to light to make it clear that the People know the truth.

As part of this, I have created a Special Council on Reviewing the Administration of the President or SCRAP, through an executrix order, to ensure that this process can continue and be sustainable.

Thank you for letting me serve as your President despite my shortcomings and while I do not ask for forgiveness, I still apologize for these actions. God bless these United States.

Eleanor's bright face appeared and she wiped a piece of hair out of her eyes.

"Hello America."

She breathed in.

"I know that right now, it may seem as if the Democratic Party, and what it stands for, is a thing of the past. That the Progressives are the future. And I am here to tell you that the Democratic Party is not dead. Not at all. Not one bit. Rather, this is a rude awakening. And it is time that our party acknowledge it in it's fullness. That the American People deserve the truth and that the age of insiders and the feared establishment is over. It may have taken a defeated nominee, a broken primary, and one resignation from our 44th President but we are there. And while some refuse to listen, I and many other Democrats will not."

She stared at the screen.

"We cannot, for any longer, not do anything. Rather, we must take the mantle of change for our party and seek to reform it. Not little by little but drastic changes."

She continued.

"And I believe that to have such change, we need someone to lead it. But not just another member of the old guard but someone new, with new ideas and a new way of running things. That is why I am officially declaring my intention to run for the Democratic Party Chair position. I may be new to politics, I may be of a low rank, but I know corruption, I know broken beaucracy. More importantly, I know how to fix it. And I hope that this party recognizes this as well."

She puffs her chest a bit.

"I intend to initiate sweeping changes to this party. First of all, I will make every elected official who takes on the mantle of the Democratic Party to take a pledge, both spoken and signed, of their duty to be honest and to uphold the values of this party. To put forth representation of their people instead of representation of their interests. A basic yet perhaps legal binding way to make sure we run good-hearted candidates. And this is a process that must be renewed...and that means oversight. That means an end to deals in smoke-filled rooms and a new oversight."

"Transparency needs to be brought, it needs to be within the Democratic party. And I intend to do so by forming an oversight committee of non-elected officials, regular Democrats - no politicians, to make sure this party operates with ethics. To ensure that we are serving the people, not ourselves. And these committees will exist at both the state level and the federal level. Accountability and Responsibility will be made staples of the party."

"Unity as well, must be refostered within the Democratic party. What every happened to comradery, to understanding differences. Now, this party's diversity has been turned from a tool to a weakness. The party can survive but only if we all can come together, no matter political spectrum differences. We must remain united and together to overcome. I intend to bring leaders of each bloc, to create mutual understanding, and to put forth real ideas to make this party have a comeback like never before."

"The Progressives, they took the mantle when the Democrats failed the American People. Now I hope that I can help lead this party with others as well, to take up that mantle and prove that this party will not die and be kicked around - that it is in fact STILL kicking to defend the values that bring us together. That this party can turn a new page. And that this party can, well, not be marked by the failures of our past leaders but rather the success of its next leaders. As the old saying goes, it doesn't matter how hard you fall but how strong, well, and fast you can get back up. And I intend to bring this party back up."

She smiled, confidently.

"Let this be a new beginning, a better one. Thank you everyone, don't lose faith. And god bless."

Hello all, you might have saw my tweets earlier today and this document will explain them. Today I will be forming a new political party that stands on these basis of returning the modern day life into a life of agriculture, farming, and rural-ism. As we believe this simpler life is the life better suited for man. We all believe here that farming and agriculture is the backbone of our society. No longer shall they be the forgotten man under this party. We will be mainly operating in mid-western states and will be running candidates in almost all local districts and state assemblies within the mid-western districts. Candidates for federal positions will be on a case-by-case basis. I encourage you all that want to change us to a time of agriculture to go run! The party will help support your campaign and we have the steps to running a successful campaign on our website http://www.nau.com I hope you all consider joining and remember our motto "Go Farm!"

Verizon Center
Washington, D.C.

Carter Roberts took a quick flight down to D.C. to take care of some business. It also happened to be the night that the Spurs were in town to play the Wizards. Sure, only a couple guys he played with were still around the league these days, but he had played under Coach Popovich and knew he would get to hang out with the team and meet some fans and stuff before the game, something he sorely missed. So he showed up at early shootaround time while only a few players were out on the court and only VIP fans were there, and sent a text message to President-Elect Calvin Reed

Hey Cal! This is Carter Roberts, the guy who's running for senator in CT. Anyways, I'm in DC right now, at the Verizon Center. I'm hanging out with some fans and shooting around and I have tickets for the Spurs-Wizards game tonight! I figured I'd invite you to come down to the court. I have your courtside ticket paid for already.

He waited a minute and sent another text:
You know, these fans would be in for a big surprise if BOTH an NBA Hall-of-Famer and the incoming POTUS showed up before a game. It would be good press for everyone involved. You should come shoot around with me and then we can watch the game.

He put the phone is his pocket, picked up a basketball, and began to shoot some easy midrange shots while occasionally stopping to sign something for a fan or talk to a sports reporter.

Verizon Center, Washington D.C.

"You left a note."

"I did."

"A note. On a piece of paper. That is now your means of communication?"

"Well, I didn't think going face-to-face would really work after that. Brought you here, didn't it?"

"What were you planning on doing if I did not arrive at the same time as you?"

"Well..."

"How long have you been waiting here, Cal?"

"Only about forty-five minutes."

She rolled her eyes. "You'll put your security detail into apoplexy." She gestured at the doors. "Well?"

Grinning, Cal pulled it open, following his wife inside.

He was somewhat annoyed at the situation, if he were to be honest with himself, he was annoyed with the way this was going down. He'd hoped for something more private than this, surrounded as they were, and couldn't help but feel that it was more of a stunt to get people talking about the Senate candidate and the President-Elect meeting up than anything else. It wasn't bad politics, but he didn't like the taste it left in his mouth.

He wasn't about to let off it, though, troublesome as the situation was. He needed to patch things up with Aubrey-he'd hoped for this to be the chance. Now with others watching, he was beginning to wonder just how good an idea it was, he was getting his stomach tied up in knots about the whole thing-which was ridiculous. He couldn't get a handle on himself, again, which seemed to be becoming all too common. He'd get over it. Eventually. Hopefully this would make that process faster rather than slower.

So, when Carter had contacted him-the man apparently preferred texting, which meant Reed picked up a phone that Keisha had set-up for him: he wasn't going to be giving out the number he'd use once in office, and it didn't seem like too bad of an idea to have a less important line that he'd be more willing to share-he'd made his way over, and now found his way on the court.

Idly deciding to give it a shot, literally, as the couple made there way into the largely-empty arena: That was a bit of a relief, at least, only a handful were there, save the players, he picked up a ball off a cart in the far corner, and decided to put up a shot at the hoop on the far side of the court.

The shot made its way over the distance-it had the power, without problem-and clanked off the rim, unceremoniously bouncing off the ground. Cal shrugged-that was actually rather better than he ought to have expected-and made his way towards midcourt-his target recognizable by his unique mix of height and age.

Roberts had been sitting down talking to the Spurs backup point guard, giving him some pointers on his defense. There were only a few people on the court, with some fans scattered about and a handful of players lazily hoisting up shots.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Reed out of the corner of his eye, walking in through one of the court-level tunnels.

Carter pointed up at him and lightly elbowed the young basketball player who was talking to him. "Look who came to visit us. President-Elect Calvin Reed himself."

In his head, he thought of his plan. He knew if he kept the situation fairly public that even if he didn't earn Reed's endorsement, people would take pictures of them together and ultimately associate the two together in their minds. That, in combination with them both being former pro athletes, would allow Roberts to propel off the Reed momentum through the primary into the general election. Of course he would prefer an endorsement from someone he admired as much as Reed, but just meeting up was enough to serve as insurance to make sure this trip wasn't a total waste.

His mind wandering snapped when the backup point guard sitting near him said "You know, you'd think the incoming president would have more security with him." Carter looked to the right and saw Reed pick up the ball and shoot; it rattled off the rim and rolled right over to Carter. He picked it up and jogged it over to him.

Handing him the ball, he then stuck out his hand to shake it. "It's an honor to finally meet you in person president-elect. I'm Carter Roberts."

Cal accepted the ball with one hand, and shook Carter's hand with the other. "I'd say I'm Calvin Reed, but something tells me that's not exactly a secret." Aubrey stood half a step backwards and to the left, glancing about the area, and looking over its populace.

"No, and I think you surprised everyone here by showing up." Roberts broke eye contact for a second, looking at the Secret Service agent standing courtside. "Honestly, I really do have to tell you how your election inspired my candidacy for Senate. It was proof to me that our political system still has room for normal people who want to make a difference, not just lawyers and businesspeople. And your platform felt so genuine to me, of someone who just wanted their country back. I felt the same way, so it was really inspirational."

"It's good to hear that, that this whole mad crusade is getting people motivated." Reed replied. "Though, looking back on it now, I really had no idea what I was getting into-I wasn't ready. It took the campaign, those experiences, the entirety of it, to really put me together to the point that I was truly ready to hold office."

"Yeah true, I haven't really thought of it that way, but it makes sense that they're more qualified. All I'm saying is that they aren't the only ones whose interests should be represented in our government. The Founders were farmers, inventers, writers, soldiers, and nearly everything else."

A ball rolled over and hit Carter's feet, and he picked it up, squared up to the hoop, and airballed it from half-court. "Hmm, must be a bit of a draft in here." he joked to Reed.

"You know, campaigning is hard. I'm glad I got a break from it to go see a game. It's therapeutic; I'm sure you feel the same way about baseball."

Aubrey continued to stand, ill-fitted on the court, neither part of the conversation, nor of the practice, and plainly uncomfortable about it. Cal glanced over as Carter took his shot, offering his the ball with a gesture-she shook her head nigh-imperceptibly. A bit of emotive goading in her direction, and she begrudgingly acquiesced-Cal tossed it to her. She caught it, not looking particularly happy, but stepped over to line up a shot regardless, not willing to dribble, as Cal turned his attention back to the conversation.

"I've never really been much of a spectator, actually. Maybe it's just the timing-campaign season overlaps baseball season-but I get itchy just standing there and watching, not doing anything about it. Baseball's not really like basketball-it's not a team sport. It is one, of course, but not at all in the same way. Basketball is a constantly flow of alternating responsibilities and responses among the team, you're a unit, and that unit determines how you play. Baseball-you've got fielders around you, but they're pretty much in place. You just wait and respond-you don't control the tempo. The only one who does that is the pitcher-and that, that's the one-on-one game. Third base won't help you dealing with a 3-1 count. Pitching, batting, it's a one-on-one game, it's a duel, mano y mano. When you watch a team sport, you can see them sort of going through what you did, you can see the strategies and ideas of it, you can see your teammates in the same way as on the court. Baseball, though, you're watching someone else have their duel, make their play at it. It's separated, compartmentalized from you. You have your battles, they have theirs, and just watching it-not the same. It's the idea of a challenger that makes it exciting, and that's just not something you can watch."

"I suppose that's true, there's a big difference there. Maybe I'm turning into one of those old guys who watches games all the time to relive their glory days or something. That really is true about working as a unit in basketball. Maybe I'll bring a little bit of that to the Senate. They need a little more of that.

So, facing off like you would with a batter, was that what it felt like debating Walton?"

Carter laughs, realizing this was probably a dumb question and changes the subject. "Oh! Is that your wife over there? Have her come over here, I'd love to meet the future first lady."

"I know that we are going to have to negotiate on this, and I think that is a good way to do it. I would want to make a plan so that we have the main wage, but we also have other categories."

She takes out a book and writes up what she is saying on one of the blank pages.

"We have the main minimum wage here. That will go up in increments, and then by percentage. But then we have these special cases."

"First we have tipped jobs. This one I would want to put on the main minimum wage and end the exemption. But maybe we can compromise. But these other cases are the important ones."

"First is teenagers. People always say that high minimum wages mean teenagers can't get entry-level jobs and experience. We can continue with something like we have now, where teenagers don't have to have the same minimum wage, but a lower one. But what we can do is make it so that after something like two years of full-time work, they have to get minimum wage no matter what, because then its a full-time job, and not just an experience builder. So that's one."

"And then two is for rural jobs, or farm jobs. I think it should be rural, beyond just farm, because we are talking about different communities in small towns and villages. If we have the increase only go to half instead of three-quarters, it will help those communities because they have lower costs of living, and it will be a good concession to Republicans to get them away from opposition."

"Finally is one more, setting up a lower wage for nonprofits. Not all nonprofits have volunteers, and they do good work for the communities. A separate minimum wage so that someone who is volunteering, but still needs some money can do that, is going to be a great way to promote community involvement."

"I think with a phased in wage and going to a percentage, and a multiple tier system with different categories this can be an excellent bill."

"Eh, not exactly..." Reed started on the quetion, before Carter noticed Aubrey, and diverted his attention. The First Lady to-be, having lined up a shot a pace outside the three-point arc, let fly, the ball striking on the far side of the rim, bouncing backwards into the closer edge, and then falling through. Aubrey glanced back, and, noting their glances and stances, stepped over to the pair of men.
Male.
