The setting sun bathed the docks in orange. They say that this was the port of exquisite sunsets, and they weren't lying, as Marcus had the fortune of seeing one his first day here. Pidgeys chirped overhead as the ship creaked its way to the dock before coming to a complete stop. Marcus stood at the stern, gripping the rail and watching the sun set over the glistening ocean. It would have been more symbolic if it was a sunrise, to symbolize the beginning of a new adventure, but the sunset was more beautiful. When he felt the boat come to a stop, he calmy made his way to the port. His companions did not contain their enthusiasm, and he almost fell over as Chopper and Cheri rushed past him and called him over to the boardwalk. With a grin, Marcus stepped off of the boat, his first step into the Kanto Region, and his new adventure as a pokemon trainer.

Route 3, Kanto

A short, pale boy wearing a black Fedora and Jacket was moving stealthily along Route 3. Percy Corbyn was the heir to one of the most successful corporations in Kanto, and an avid Pokémon Trainer.

He was there for a very simple reason; he needed to train his Pokémon in order to stand a chance against his Pewter City's Gym Leader. He was hoping to catch another or two in the midst of his level grinding, but the main focus remained on strengthening his current partners.

He gazed around at the vast mountains surrounding the area. This would be the perfect area to find Ground and Rock-type Pokémon, though they would be ineffective in achieving his current objective. Eventually, he walked right next to some particularly tall grass, took a deep breathe, walked in, and waited.

Soon, he thought, I'll make them proud, I'll make my parents the proudest they've ever been of me, He heard a distant rustling sound, I'm going to be the greatest in history! He grabbed one of his two full Poké balls, and watched the movement within the blades, ready to fight.

Olivine City

A small house upon the sunny shores of Olivine a satchel at her side and a Poké Ball in her hand, the ball that had her companion, Smoke tucked away inside. "Come out, Smoke!" she opened it unleashing him he let out his cry and wagged his little tail. "Today's the day! We're setting off together just you and me!" Smoke let out a happy cry ready to be at the side of his trainer. "Here ya, go!" She tossed him a Bluk Berry, his favorite berry. "All right, time to come back" She recalled him to the Poké Ball and she put it into her satchel. From the pillow atop her bed, she picked up her S.S. Aqua Ticket and set down stairs, her mother was at the table, as a Swimmer she was already getting ready to set out herself, to swim along Route 40.

"Ah my Aliza, look at you all grown and setting out a Journey. But you only want to take Smoke with you? I'm more than happy to lend you Tidal (Horsea), he'd serve you well in battle. And my dear, are you sure you want to go all the way to Kanto?"

"I appreciate it, mom but I really am excited to start catching Pokémon on my own. You should train up Tidal so he can be as strong as Gale (Seadra) and Typhoon (Kingdra). And yes, Kanto is a great place to start."

"Ah you're right. Be careful then, and call me when you can."

"Yes, mom I will."

"And if by chance you see your father while out traveling tell him to bring me more apricorns."

"Yes, mom."

The door opened in walked Cici, her older sister and Miltank Farmer. "Little sis, before you go!"

"Cici! What are you doing all the way down here? What about the Miltanks?"

"They're all just fine, feasting away on berries and I'm only here for a short visit. My little sister is setting off on her journey and I wanted to do three things, one was see you off and wish you luck! Second I want you to have this."

She gave her a bottle of world famous Moomoo Milk. "Give that to your Pokemon if you're in a pinch, it's delicious and tasty and freshly squeezed"

"Thanks but what's the third thing?"

Suddenly Cici grew a little solemn. "If you recall last month we lost Kiki to her age and as you are going to Kanto, please travel to Lavender Town and go to the Pokemon Tower Memorial. Set up a place to honor her. She gave a lot of good milk before she returned to Arceus. Everyone who ever had a bottle of famous Moomoo Milk should remember her."

"Right, sis I'll do it."

"Good luck, make us all proud!"

Last round of goodbyes and Aliza set off on her journey to begin.

Vermilion City

The Speedy S.S. Aqua arrived after dark in the grand city by the sea. Her father always told her, Vermilion was the Pearl of Kanto, odd with so many coastal towns and an island town but no doubt it was a lovely city shimmering in the night. "Come out, Smoke" She once again let him out of his ball. "We've made it. We're now in Kanto!"

He let out a happy cry and leapt up on his legs for a moment. "Mmm this town does have a gym but it's probably way out of my league right now. Best you and me do some training. Ah well maybe first thing in the morning. I'm sure we can stay at the Pokémon Center. But oooh I don't know that I can sleep there's so much to do and see here alone! Ooh this is so exciting!"

Smoke let out another happy cry. "Ah now I wish I had gotten you groomed in Goldenrod City just to make you more spiffy. Ah oh well. What do you say we go find The Center?"

He gave off another cry. "Mmm and you've been in your ball since we left, I'm sure you can follow me around for a while."

Vermillion City: Pokémon Center

Marcus had just begun his first day in Vermillion City, and it was already coming to a close. He wasn't sure if there were any hotels to be found in this city, so he was going to have to stay in the Pokémon Center. As dusk faded into night, he entered the Center with Chopper and Cheri, who were immediately greeted by the resident nurse.

"Hello, and welcome to our pokémon center!" The nurse said cheerfully. "You don't look familiar, and those two sure don't look like any pokémon I've ever seen" She looked at Chopper and Cheri. "Did you just come off of the ship from Canalave City?"

"Yeah, I did" Marcus replied. "And I must say, it sure is warmer her compared to Sinnoh. Good thing I brought lighter clothing" Both of them chuckled. "Are there any rooms where I can stay the night?"

"Yes there are! Just take the door to my left" The nurse said. With a "thanks" and a "have a good night", Marcus and his Buizel and Mime Jr. went to the nearest vacant room.

From his bag, he took out two small circular beds for his pokémon; he wasn't going to make them sleep on the floor! He didn't have anything else to set up, so he decided to go outside while his pokémon kade themselves comfortable in their beds.

When he opened the doors of the center, Marcus was met by the cool ocean breeze. Nonetheless, it was still far warmer than Sinnoh, making him thank himself again for packing lighter clothing. Then, he heard another ship coming into the dock, the S.S. Anne. If he was correct, that one just came from the Johto region. As it unloaded its passengers, he caught sight of another trainer that was heading towards the center. It looked like he wasn't the only one who wanted to start off his journey in Kanto. As the trainer neared the center, Marcus appraoched her and said, "Hey. You're a pokémon trainer too, right? I'm Marcus, from the Sinnoh region"

Upon approaching the Center Aliza found herself greeted by another trainer, a boy trainer who quickly greeted her. Being away from home it was nice to see other friendly faces. Smoke let out an intrigued cry once he introduced himself. "Oh hello!" she dashed the renaming few steps to the doors of the center. "It's nice to meet you, Marcus! I am a trainer and my name is Aliza I'm from the Johto Region. You're all the way from Sinnoh, huh? Wow so far up north! I thought it was a big deal when I crossed the border to Kanto!"

Smoke let out another cry. "Oh I almost forgot, this is Smoke!"

"Whoa!" Marcus leaned down until his face was only a few inches away from the Houndour. "I've never seeen a pokémon like that before! Well, I haven't really seen many pokémon at all..." He stood back up. "Wait, it's a... Houndour!" He'd never seen one in person, but he had read all about the different pokémon of far away regions, as well as the different leagues. According to the books, the resident gym leader is a former soldier by the name of Lieutenant Surge, who uses electric type pokémon. It'd be best if he stayed away from him until he had a ground type on his team, maybe a Ryhorn.

"My pokémon are fast asleep in the center right now after that long voyage. Trust me, Sinnoh isn't that much of a big deal. It's cold, like, very cold. So, where are you heading off to? Are you going to challenge Surge?"

She giggled "So I've heard, from the time my dad has spent up there. Never seen a Houndour eh? Guess it's no surprise there's many I haven't seen outside of books or pictures. Well I was heading for the center to stay the night. I don't think I'm ready to take on the Gym here way too tough and I need some more team members and experience before that. I suppose I should head to Pewter City."

"Really? I was thinking of going there, too!" Marcus said before yawning. "I think I should join my pokémon in sleeping. I'm staying at the center, too. G'night!" With a wave, he returned to his room at the pokémon center before climbing into the bed. Tomorrow. Tomorrow is when his adventure really begins.

Vermillion City, Kijuro Fukunaga

Kijuro had just made it to the Pokémon Center, a stampede of Tauros somehow made their way through the city which slowed him. He walked up to the desk and asked if any rooms were available, luckily for him there was just one more so he went to it and prepared to go to sleep. He decided to open the window as Charmander's tail would probably cook him and Froakie. Nobody in Kanto had actually seen a Froakie before, so using it battle would surely surprise the locals.

The next day...

Marcus woke up to the sounds of his pokémon crying out until he sat up. "Ugh... you two sure are eager, huh?" Chopper and Cheri gave another excited cry in response. "Alright, let's get going"

After getting washed up, he left the room to see that other trainers have stayed the night as well. Yesterday must have been "Start Your Pokémon Adventure in Vermilion City" day, since tired trainers were emerging from every room. The Buizel and Mime Jr. cried out to all of the trainers as they were forced into the hallway by their own pokémon.

"If everyone wasn't already awake, I would've made you two go back into your pokéballs" Marcus sighed, taking a quick glare at his pokémon. "I might as well make something out of this..." The pokémon trainer stepped forward and waved his arms until he caught everyone's attention.

"I know it's early in the morning, but it looks like all of you are about to do some training. Who wants to start the day off with a battle?" Upon hearing their trainer announce his challenge, Chopper jumped up onto Marcus' shoulder, while Cheri stood in front of him.

Kijuro woke up with a yawn, Charmander hadn't accidentally melted everybody. After getting changed he opened the door to find a hallway of people and Pokémon, then somebody asked about a battle. "Uh... Sure." He said before looking at the hallway. "Maybe outside though?" Froakie then decided to hop up onto his shoulder.

"Froakie!" The Pokémon cried out.

Marcus rushed outside with his pokémon before taking a battling stance. "Welcome to the Kanto region. Bring it on!"

Vermillion City
Max arrived at the Vermillion Pokemon Center and let out a sigh. It had been a long journey from Route 10. He had to go back through Cerulean and Saffron. On the way, he had defeated many trainers and it made his bond with Electabuzz stronger. He walked up to the front desk and saw the nurse smiling, as usual. "Hello, welcome to the Pokemon Center. How may I help you?"

"I'd like to heal my Electabuzz," Max said as he handed the pokeball to Nurse Joy. The nurse nodded and took the Pokeball to the back. After a few minutes, she came back and told him Electabuzz was back to full strength. He started to walk back outside when he heard a noise outside, it sounded like trainers battling.

He walked outside and noticed two trainers battling. A Froakie and Mime Jr. were being pitted against each other. Max sat on the bleachers and decided to watch the battle. It wouldn't hurt to watch these two trainers battle.

"Sorry Froakie but this fight's going to be for Charmander." Kijuro looked at Froakie, who had gotten quite excited about the battle. "Froakie..." The small Frog Pokémon cried out in sadness. "Don't worry, you might be able to help in some way." To which Froakie cheered up.

"Okay Charmander, come out and use Smokescreen with a followup of Ember!" Kijuro threw out a Pokéball and Charmander came out, the small lizard Pokémon blinded Cheri with a thick blast of smoke and then spat out an extra hot ember.

Battle! Pokémon Trainer Marcus!

Marcus saw the two attacks heading right towards Cheri. he had to think fast, running threw all of the different moves that he knew that the Mime Jr. could use.

"Uh, quick! Use barrier!"

In response, Cheri raised her arms in front of her, and pushed, creating an iridescent glass square in front of her. When the attacks came close, however, they just passed right through, leaving Cheri coughing in the smoldering smoke.

Marcus, you idiot! He scolded himself. Barrier raises defense, not special defense! Still, I doubt that Charmander knows any other special attacks, so that might just help in the long run.

"Give them a taste of their own medacine! Use copycat, then follow up with confusion!" Cheri closed her eyes, and she became enveloped in a wavy white aura. As she opened her eyes, one of them twinkled, and she released a black cloud of smoke at the opposing Charmander. The next moment, from within the cloud of smoke that now covered both pokémon, two glowing white eyes pierced through the darkness. A thin blue outline surrounded the Charmander, and it was lifted high into the air, only to be thrown back down to the hard ground.

"Char!" Charmander cried as it was blinded and then thrown into the ground. "What is this?" Kijuro though as he took out the Pokédex that Professor Sycamore gave him, he pointed it at Cheri and it beeped. "MIME JR, THE MIME POKÉMON. IT IS A PSYCHIC AND FAIRY TYPE." The Pokédex said.

"Charmander, use Smokescreen followed by five consecutive scratches and an ember to the face!" Kijuro shouted, causing Charmander to hop back up and spit heavier smoke at Cheri, he then rushed at the Mime Jr and scratched it five times before firing an ember at it's face. In the heat of the battle, Kijuro remembered what Marcus had said earlier. "I moved up to Kalos fairly recently, I'm actually from this region, Kanto."

Vermillion City

A particularly fancy-looking car had pulled up by the Pokémon Center. The doors swung upon, and out came Percy Corbyn, still wearing his Fedora and black jacket, followed by Michael Corbyn, a short man with a bushy Mustache and a Bowler hat, and Kelly Corbyn, a tall, blond, beautiful lady.

They were here to take a brief vacation, after a highly successful business venture. There was hope that they could make some friends who would be invaluable in the future. Percy in particular was interested in meeting other Trainers, a major reason for parking where they did.

Looking around, Percy noticed that there was a battle in progress just outside of the Center. He could recognize one of the fighters as a Charmander, a common Pokémon to start with, he could not recognize the other Pokémon, however.

"Ah, a Mime Jr," said his father next to him, "I had seen one of them while traveling to the Sinnoh Region, once," he smiled, thinking of the memory. Percy had no idea what a Mime Jr. was, but he was determined to find out. Out of interested, he began to monitor the confrontation from the sidelines.

A few seconds later, he realized that this could be a valuable learning experience for not just him, but for his Pokémon as well. Taking two Poké Balls out of his satchel, he released Ellie, his Rattata, along with his Sandshrew, who was named Naegi.

The two Pokémon immediately cheered upon their release. Percy laughed a little, before gently pointing towards the current action, "Pay attention, you two. This could be very important for strategy," Ellie and Naegi turned their heads towards the direction their Trainer wanted them to look. While Ellie merely yawned, after seeing so many Trainer battles in Pewter, Naegi let out a cry of joy upon realize that this was no ordinary wild battle, but a battle of wits and cunning that he had never seen before.

Battle! Pokémon Trainer Marcus!

It knows scratch! Just as I suspected! Now, he was able to take full advantage of barrier. Even as the area was clouded with even more smoke, to the point that Marcus was having trouble seeing, he was able to maintain his confidence.

"Cheri, use barrier!" Trusting her trainer, the Mime Jr. placed another glass square in front of itself. This time, it was a success, as the Charmander's scratches did nothing to even scratch the glass, giving Cheri the opportunity to leap into the air to avoid the ember.

"Now use tickle, and follow up with copycat!" Cheri fell back into the cloud of smoke, landing behind Charmander to quickly tickle it before jumping back into the air. With the tickle lowering its attack and defense, and barrier sharply increasing Cheri's defense, physical attacks won't be doing much harm. Back in the air, Cheri became enveloped in a wavy aura once more as it copied scratch, falling back down to deliver a series of quick scratches at the Charmander.

Battle! Pokémon Trainer Marcus!

Both Marcus and Cheri shared the exact same expression; comeplete shock. Astonished at how fast and how numerous the embers were, he made the same mistake he made before, using Barrier against a special attack. Just like before, the fireballs blasted through the glass, pelting Cheri by the dozen. When the smoke of the attack vanished, the Mime Jr. was out of commission.

"It's okay, Cheri! You did great!" Marcus called out to his fainted pokémon as she returned to her pokéball.

"Alright, Chopper! Show them what you've got!" Pointing forward, the Buizel ran forward as Marcus's second and final pokémon. Chopper doesn't know and water type attacks yet, but that doesn't mean that I don't have the advantage.

"Let's start things off with Water Sport!" Chopper opened his mouth and sprayed a fountain of water into the air which fell across the street in small, harmless droplets.

"All fire attacks are now weakened. Combine that with their lowered attack and defense and your Charmamnder has almost no offense and defense! Chopper, use Quick Attack!" The Buizel dashed forward at an alarming speed, leaving a white trail behind him as he tackled the Charmander.

Charmander flew back and hit the ground, fainted. "Good job Charmander." Kijuro said, looking at the fainted Pokémon. Charmander sparkled for a bit, showing that it had leveled up. He returned Charmander to his Pokéball. "Froakie, jump up high and stop them in their tracks with your Frubbles!" And Froakie did so, he leaped into the air and threw his Frubbles at Chopper's feet, rendering them immobile. "Now use pound!" Froakie slammed down on the Buizel.

Battle! Pokémon Trainer Marcus!

"Frubbles?" Marcus asked to himself, both he and Chopper tilting their heads in confusion. The Froakie just reached into the scarf around its neck and threw the bubbles it pulled out to be used as some sort of sticky trap. "Oh. Froakie bubbles. Frubbles"

Marcus chuckled, but Chopper growled after being hit by the Froakie as he struggled to get out of the bubbly mess that was more sticky than a Wurmple's string shot. "Try to fly out of there, Chopper!" Marcus called out, and the Buizel turned and nodded. It leaned forward, and his twin tails began to spin. They gained slid until they looked like helicopter blades, and not long after, they worked just like helicopter blades. Chopper began to rise into the air, his feet still glued to the pavement.

Come on, just a little bit more... Marcus thought, and to his fortune, Chopper's feet freed themselves from the Frubbles a few seconds afterwards. Now, the Buizel was flying high above the others, grinning and barking in excitement.

"Awesome! Now, use Sonic Boom!" Marcus called out to his airborne pokémon. Chopper nodded and turned around, launching blasts of wind from his rapidly spinning tails.
