According to the map, there is an area south of that mountain range that has no mountains, and I could go around it and enter right into the Sultanate's territory. I could also go through a mountain pass or invade by sea.

Then you would know that the defender has an almost insurmountable advantage. Your only hope is to hit him bu following a coastal route. Otherwise all he has to do is sit on the oasis's and let you thirst and starve.

The priest doesn't represent the Followers as a whole but is willing to assist for his own purposes. His skill with necromancy would likely give the Ethians an edge on intelligence gathering, and though not truly offensive his communion with the dead could be utilized to weaken the morale of the enemy soldiers.

If they want to learn about Aetherium and the use of steam, that's off the table for any Ethian city-state
