New Frontier OOC (Superhero, OPEN)

Postby The first Galactic Republic » Thu Jun 09, 2016 9:10 pm

"The pioneers gave up their safety, their comfort, and sometimes their lives to build our new west. They were determined to make the new world strong and free - an example to the world. Some would say that those struggles are all over. That all the horizons have been explored. That all the battles have been won. That there is no longer an American frontier. And we stand today on the edge of a new frontier. The frontier of unknown opportunities and perils...

...I'm asking each of you to be pioneers towards that New Frontier. My call is to the young in heart, regardless of age. Can we carry through in an age where we will witness not only new breakthroughs in weapons of destruction, but also a race for mastery of the sky and the rain, the ocean and the tides, the far side of space, and the inside of men's minds? All mankind waits upon out decision. A whole world waits to see what we shall do. And we cannot fail that trust, and we cannot fail to try."

- John F. Kennedy

Imagine a world where superheroes are common, mundane in fact. Imagine that they are everywhere, with wondrous and vast abilities, working to keep the people of the world safe. Imagine these heroes are just like you. Your siblings. Your cousins. Your uncles and friends. Your neighbors and co-workers. Your sons an nieces. Imagine they got their powes from an international organization and became government employees. Imagine they are the law. Before them you have no rights. No entitlement. You have traded them your freedom for the ultimate security. If you could imagine this than you have an idea of what the new frontier is like.

This is a character RP that is very story heavy. It is somewhat of a love letter to the superhero genre we all know and love. Looking at many aspects of the genre and analyzing what a superhero really is, the RP also has an engaging and unique overarching story. Hopefully players will enjoy it.

Name:

Physical Appearance:

Powers: Include how many points each power is worth
Operative or Attuned: If Unity
Weakness: Has to be a real weaknesses

App Guidelines

1. Be creative with your powers really. Use your imagination.
2. You don't have to use all your points.

Powers have a tier system. Major powers costs six points. Minor powers cost three points. Weak powers cost one point. You have six points to spend on your character's powers. As a rule of thumb weak powers are things a human could do with training like firearm mastery. Minor powers are things the human body could do if enhanced like super strength. Major powers are completely inhuman like electrokinesis.

There are two types of Unity superheroes. Attuned and operatives. Attuned have one power and develop it over time. Operatives are frequently given new powers, sometimes a different power for each mission.

Rules:

1. OP is law
2. This RP has a power limit. If your character can solo the Balrog from Lord of the Rings without trouble than you are too powerful for the RP.
3. If you are a Unity superhero, try not to do obviously illegal things like kill civilians are disobey direct orders
4. There are no villains at the start of the RP. You can become one though.

Lore and Backstory

Image

In this world heroes first started to appear in the late 1930s and 40s, much like real life comic book superheroes. These early heroes were vigilantes who became minor celebrities in their cities. Many were just normal people in costumes.

In the 50s however superheroes became more and more common and many started to appear with strange powers and abilities. People feared these heroes initially but the heroes earned the nation's trust with their genuinely heroic actions. Possessing great powers and yet using their powers to fight crime and help people, the superheroes became national icons. In the 60s the government began to worry about the accountability of the superheroes, so many of the heroes agreed to form an organization to unite the superheroes and be monitored by the government. In 1962 the Banner Men were created, and the actions of the superheroes really became known. A recognizable dent was put in organized crime and the heroes became not just national but global celebrities. Many heroes campaigned for various civil rights movements, from women's rights to the proper treatment of veterans. The 1960s were a much more peaceful time in this world than they were in ours. The heroes helped guide the United States into a new age. Instead of living in fear from social unrest and the Cold War, the world looked to the United States and its heroes as an inspiration.

Of course in the stories superheroes breed supervillains. This world was no different. As the heroes began to put a real dent in organized crime more dangerous and powerful criminals began to rise. They outright challenged the superheroes, also adopting costumes and identities. However once the Banner Men were formed the combined efforts of the heroes were able to defeat the villains time and time again. In spite of this however the era was largely peaceful. The heroes were outlandish and campy, but the people loved their spandex clad protectors. However if the 60s in this world were more peaceful than ours, the 70s were much worse.

Image

Supervillains never worked together. Their goals were mutually exclusive were always fighting each other. Six villains however, the most unlikely alliance, worked together to enact a grand plan to bring down the Banner Men and the US government. In 1973 the heroes died. It was a nightmare. Nukes detonated. Cities were ravaged. Almost every member of the Banner Men was killed. When it was over there was nothing to stop the six from taking over the country. They set up a puppet government to rule for them, doing as they pleased while the US military tore itself apart in civil war. Tens of thousands died, and the surviving heroes and other supervillains were hunted down.

It took six years before a CIA operation with help from the surviving members of the Banner Men was able to overthrow the puppet government and reinstall the old one. When it happened none of the six villains were anywhere to be found. The United States was restored. People's sense of security and safety were not. People turned on the surviving heroes blaming them for being unable to stop what happened, but people also turned on governments and militaries. They weren't enough to save them. People needed heroes but the old ones weren't good enough. They needed something new.

Image

What would happen next would change humanity forever, arguably as much as the industrial revolution or the agricultural revolution. The world poured resources into the project. The world came together as the old alliances of the earlier part of the 20th century fell apart. It's whole history humanity had been at war with itself, but these supervillains gave people a true "them". An enemy to fear. Something to band everyone, regardless of culture or nationality, together united in terror. Decades went by as the project progressed only slowly, but in working on it the world was brought together. The world was no longer divided between nations. Between races. Between economic systems. The world was now humanity against its certainly impending destruction. Thus when the project was completed it was only fitting that it would become known as The Unity.

The Unity is something that has never happened before. The Banner Men was an organization of existing heroes. The Unity builds them. The Unity has the power to literally give superpowers of all kinds to normal people. Thus the concept of a superhero has changed. Now anyone can aspire to be one. Now anyone can be super.

Image

Superheroes are created by The Unity and serve as law enforcers and peacekeeping troops. No longer vigilantes, superheroes are now government employees. Something of a cross between police officers and UN peacekeeping soldiers these superheroes solve problems across the world. Militaries and civilian governments as we know them have disappeared, replaced by Unity headquarters and the superheroes they create. In our world something like this might be called Orwellian. In this world however, people think they have finally solved the eternal problem of world security.

Superheroes of the Unity can be given any power the Unity has. There are two types of heroes. Attuned are heroes that are given a power and stick with it. They develop their powers further over time. Operatives are constantly being assigned new powers. They often get new powers for each mission. Superheroes are lead by officers, experienced superheroes who have been on many missions.

The Unity is an international organization. It has headquarters across the world with different regions being assigned to different headquarters. Each headquarter has dozens of superheroes. The headquarters are run by directors and the Unity furthermore has representation in national governments.

People with powers who aren't part of the Unity are called Rogues. They are hunted by the superheroes of the Unity as well national police forces. Rogues caught by the Unity have their powers copied. From their they can become superheroes themselves, or return to civilian life under permanent government surveillance. Those who don't cooperate... The Unity ultimately seeks to acquire every possible power.

I think you're misunderstanding the nature of the tier system. Your character can't have so many powers worth six points. Your character can have a total of six points.

Unity or Rogue: Rogue.
Powers:, Eidetic Memory (1 point), Invisibility (3 points), Stealth Mastery (1 point), Unarmed Combat Mastery (1 point).
Operative or Attuned: Attuned.
Weakness: Invisibility powers cannot bend coherent light (lasers) and contact with lasers, while invisible, creates an electric shock to her system. Also, electricity.

Detailed Description of Power:
Eidetic Memory (1): Has total recall of everything she has seen and heard.
Invisibility (3): Cannot be seen/detected by people or devices in the infrared and visible light spectrum. Invisibility can be circumvented by echolocation/sonar, weight detection and conditions/traps that cause footprints.
Stealth Mastery (1): Very difficult to be heard without sound amplifying senses/equipment.
Unarmed Combat Mastery (1): Capable of inflicting better than normal damage and evading/lessening inflicted damage through martial arts techniques.

Bio: Mishima Hana was raised by parents who were very civic minded and taught her to believe that public service and fighting crime were the most honorable things a person could do with their life. She had two older sisters that were not pressured as the parents thought they might still have a son to groom into their civic ideals, but after Hana was born it was decided that they would encourage her as they would have if they had had a boy.

Hana attended schools with programs designed to optimize her chances of qualifying to join Unity. At the age of twelve, she was accepted into the Unity Youth Evaluation and Training program. At thirteen, it was decided that Hana would be groomed as a Unity Internal Affairs Operative. She trained and sharpened her abilities for five years before receiving her officer’s commission.

During her second year as an Internal Affairs Operative [Redacted] Hana was declared a Rogue and has been hunted by Unity.

Name: Dr. Corbin Strauss
Codename: N/A
Sex: Male
Age: 32
Physical Appearance:
Image
Unity or Rogue: Rouge
Powers: Unlimited Shapeshifting (6 points)
Operative or Attuned: N/A
Weakness: Intense Shapeshifting into an illogical state or something almost transcendent will put him into a coma for several months, and possibly kill him.

Detailed Description of Power: Corbin has complete and absolute control over his own being, allowing him to manipulate his shape, density, size or to be solid, liquid, gaseous, or pure energy. He can spread his form into smaller segments that keep his ability to transform and recombine as he wishes. He can take any possible form that he can imagine.

Bio: Corbin Strauss was born to a marine biologist and veterinarian in Washington, D.C. His upbringing was a highly educated yet loose one, with his family homeschooling him solely in subjects that interested him, but to an extent far greater than any public education could give him. His proficiency in the Arts and Sciences and the Political World, as well as an insight into people's feelings, set him apart from most, and by the age of 18 he had learned 8 languages, 23 instruments, become Student Body President of his high school, started a nation renowned Model UN, and written a speech for the Secretary of State.
He discovered his power at the age of 20 when his car was struck by an intoxicated driver going 94 miles an hour.
As his car was struck, he felt his body changing in an unnatural way, and soon felt himself floating above the crash site witnessing the death of his boyfriend and two other close friends.
As he abruptly transformed back into a person, he fell 40 feet and broke both legs.
The emergency responders were amazed that he had ended up in a position behind the vehicle, with minimal cuts and slashes from all of the broken glass.
Following this incident, he slowly unlocked his true potential, and routinely began transforming into animals, plants, inanimate objects, gasses, and other people. At 26 after securing a Doctorate in Psychology from Georgetown, he moved to Iceland to start a new life, and quickly added Icelandic and Norwegian to his repertoire of languages. He became married to an Icelandic Citizen, Jorgen Skyëdottir, who works for Unity as a powered individual who can control light.
They have a 2 year old adopted son named John.
As a U.S. Icelandic Citizen, he spends about 6 months of a year in Iceland, and 6 months in the United States.
He has chosen to hide his ability from everyone, as he distrusts certain elements of Unity, and favors personal freedom ever government overreach.
He has successful Psychiatric and Counseling firms in both Reykjavik and New York City.
Note: Languages Spoken English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Portugese, Hindi, Latin, Norwegian, Icelandic, and, embarrassingly, Elvish.

Likes: Helping people, Men, Wine Collecting, Classical and Orchestral Music, Writing and Illustrating, Zoology, Academia, Ice Cream, and Dogs.
Dislikes: Government Overreach and Liars.
Theme Song: N/A... As of yet.

Name: Robin Thick
Codename: Scarlet Avenger, also known as Scarlet Knight and Scarlet Justice
Sex: Female
Age: 40
Physical Appearance: WIP, red hair light skin. Medium height and build.
Unity or Rogue: Rogue
Powers: Firearm Mastery (1), Some close quarters ability
Operative or Attuned: N/A
Weakness: Somewhat aging body, mental issues
Detailed Description of Power: Posesses military training level firearm ability and the money to purchase various weapons. Also has notable close quarters fighting ability but not enough for it to be considered a power.

Bio: The millionaire daughter of an eccentric millionaire family, Robin's parents were themselves the children of eccentric new money millionaires from the 30s. When her parents came to LA they immediately became known for their extravagance and odd behavior. It was to this not entirely stable household that Robin Thick was born.

Grappling with mental instability her whole life, Robin's life was changed when she and her father became the victims of a brutal mugging. Her father was beaten unconscious and she escaped only by hiding. From then on she had a deep obsession with crime.

When her parents died Robin inhereted their fortune, and worked with her family's close associates to turn the vast fortune into a profitable company. Robin herself had little control of the company but she retained access to a vast fund. Publicly she spends this fortunate on an eccentric lifestyle as one of LA's many eccentric millionaires. Secretly however much of it goes to weapons and technology as she waged her personal war on crime.

The truth about Robin Thick is that she has lost her battle against her mental trauma. She suffers from split personality disorder and has four main personalities.

Her Robin Thick identity is her normal lifestyle. An eccentric millionaire who leaves the managing of her company to her business associates. She is not secretly a superhero. She is living a normal life in this personality.

Her first "superhero" personality is Scarlet Justice. Scarlet Justice fights crime across the city. Scarlet Justice only uses a few weapons, such as bola and a nightclub. She carries a pistol she only uses if necessary. Scarlet Justice tries not to kill criminals. She leaves them tied up for the police. She tries to rare red clothing if possible.

Her second identity is Scarlet Knight. This personality is the only one that knows about and acknowledges the others. Of course she thinks she is the superior personality. Scarlet Knight aggressively hunts down crime across the city, targeting organized crime specifically. She wields a number of weapons, including a specially designed armored car that can be remotely driven. She tries not to kill criminals but has no problems doing so. She has a specially designed red outfit.

Her last identity is Scarlet Avenger. Scarlet Avenger is a brutal murderer who wages a personal war on all crime. She is as likely to target gang bangers as she is organized crime. She kills freely and in the the most efficient ways possible. She also uses any weapon she can acquire, often tipping into "Robin's" bank account. She is especially hated by the LAPD, and is known to operate in other west coast cities. None of her other personalities ever leave LA. She wears whatever is practical.

Born too late to experience the golden age of superheroes, she none the less despises the Unity and prefers her own war on crime. Her actions have labeled her a Rogue.

Likes: Fighting crime, crime (seeing that she is technically a criminal)
Dislikes: Crime, taxes
Theme Song: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XBuXfcFKAlo

An example app. Personally I think it shows how to be creative with a character past the constraints of the power system.

Likes: Fighting crime, crime (seeing that she is technically a criminal), taxes
Dislikes: Crime
Theme Song: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XBuXfcFKAlo

An example app. Personally I think it shows how to be creative with a character past the constraints of the power system.

Looks like Batman with a multiple personality disorder.

I kind of based it off that kind of hero (lots of heroes comparable to Batman) but decided to really take a deeper and more unique look at the multiple lives those types of heroes lead and their personalities.

Whereas Batman and many other heroes are well heroes in their stories, I'm not going to tell you that Scarlet Avenger isn't a brutal psycho.

Other heroes often have their regular lives and their superhero lives conflict each other. Here though Scarlet Avenger is straight up at war with her civilian personality. Robin once hired accountants to find out where her funds were going, and Scarlet Avenger proceeded to kill them.

She's also got elements of the Punisher in there.

Name: Henry Franklyn
Codename: Solarmancer
Sex: Male
Age: 26
Physical Appearance: Young looking, with a clean-shaven face, blue eyes and short black hair. Midling height, a little below average. Not particularly good looking, but with a charming smile that makes him very photogenic. Very conscientous about his appearance, keeping up the appearance of being well-groomed but slightly windswept, according to what he believes people expect a hero to look like.
Unity or Rogue: Unity
Powers: EM Spectrum Manipulation (6)
Operative or Attuned: Attuned
Weakness: Solarmancer can only manipulate available energy, not generate or store it. If his power source is depleted or damaged, his powers will be significantly reduced (or lost entirely if he is in a low energy environment)
Detailed Description of Power: Solarmancer has the ability to harness and manipulate energy across the electromagnetic spectrum. He is capable, not only of absorbing and redirecting it, but also changing its frequency. For example, he could absorb light and turn it into heat, or draw radio waves from the air and release them as electricity. He cannot generate or store energy, however, so Unity designed special battery packs which he can draw on for power when there is insufficient electromagnetic radiation in the environment.

Bio: Henry Franklyn is the grandson of one of the original Banner Men, also called Solarmancer. Henry never met his grandfather, who was killed by the villains, but only idolized him the more for it. Determined to live up to his family legacy, Henry enlisted with Unity the first chance he got. Henry's original intention was to become and operative, however fate changed his plans when Unity scientists discovered that he possessed the latent genes necessary to recreate Solarmancer's power (they had previously been unable to replicate it). Not only did they recreate Solarmancer's power, they enhanced it, giving Henry the ability to manipulate the entire electromagnetic spectrum (his grandfather had only been able to control those frequencies found in sunlight -- hence his name). Wishing to capitalize on the fact that they had finally recreated the powers of an admired Banner Man, Unity encouraged Henry to become an Attuned hero, adopting his ancestor's pseudonym as well as his abilities.
Due to the versatility of his powers, Solarmancer was placed in Unity's Special Operations Division. He is not based anywhere in particular, but rather deployed in trouble spots around the world, wherever the local heroes need a little extra muscle. Unity is also grooming him to act as a spokesman, due to his famous name, natural charm, and absolute faith in the organization.

Likes: History, science, science fiction novels, superheroes (he's basically a fanboy in a fanboy's dream universe)
Dislikes: Cold, the dark, rogues, anybody else who question's unity.
Theme Song: None at the moment. I'll add one if I think of it.

Accepted. Pretty cool weaving his backstory into the history of the Banner Men.

Hopefully a few more people will join, maybe from the interest thread.

Until then are there any questions anyone needs answered for the IC?

Well, I am currently working on my IC prologue. Thought I would have her slip out of Japan and sneak onto a flight going to Los Angeles. Maybe look at the gang situation.

How many do you think there should be before the IC goes up?

If you have dedicated writers, 4 should be enough.

If you think it might help, put a big "ALWAYS OPEN" into the title of the OOC.
