Own goals perhaps since controlling the British isles right now is rather hard given what has just happened to it. The complete, and total breakdown of society tends to do that. I could see them manipulating the outbreak given the tensions between the big three (the U.S, European Federation, and the Soviet Union).

Born in Livingston, Montana. Jamie was a photojournalist, writer, and possibly a conspiracy theorist. (I say possibly, because I'm not really sure how I can convey such a character.) He is an advocate against the current government of the States, war, and nuclear weapons. Jamie isn't part of anything major, rather running his own little network in hopes of making some impact. Although it rarely ever spreads out, Jamie continues to persist, often enlisting the help of larger groups to amplify his ideals. At first he only wrote short articles and excerpts that denounced various personalities, governments and whatnot. Sometime after he got a camera from his mother upon request, Jamie began to investigate more intensively, nosing into official business, unknowingly putting himself in danger.

With his camera, Jamie witnessed many sensitive events which he knew could affect the outlying branches of the government where corruption and treachery was abounding. He propagated what information he knew, and got in trouble with the wrong people. He does not fear for his life and continues his work, but plans to separate himself from family to keep them safe by fleeing to Oslo, where he can hopefully conduct some more research, perhaps even on the European Federation's affairs. The reason Jamie hates war is because he lost someone important to him (his father) in the bombing of New York. He hates the government because he believes they had a part in the mass murder.

The people in his hometown and his parents were ever weary of each other, as suspicions arose over his father's ideological stance. While the other citizens of this small community clung to the traditions and views of the American Dream and the Republic (despite the fall from the Republican tradition that their nation was founded on), his parents raised him in a household wherein he was quietly exposed to the ideas of Marx and other communist revolutionaries because of his father's wish for a Communist America, feeling that the mega corporations of his once beloved home have too long been responsible for this deviation from the path of liberty and all the ill events of the world since the last war, keeping the working class oppressed and in danger of starvation in his eyes. As such, James was a confused and often scorned child for the suspicions cast on his family, but also found it difficult to gain acceptance with his parents when he was seen hanging out with kids whose parents they feuded and passively-aggressively existed with. Throughout his childhood he was quiet and withdrawn because of this, searching for answers and his own identity amidst the confusing world around him.

James came to love books and all forms of literature, reading both recent works that clearly attempted to brainwash him with American Dream propaganda, the communist manifesto thanks to his father (a book that could have gotten him arrested for possessing), and much older works by renowned fiction authors, his favorites being the works of Mark Twain. Ambulon practically runs the Republic of Japan (a republic based around most of the former empire with the north being a soviet puppet). The U.S department of Economics, and Control relies on Mega-corporations to feed the country, but rations them in order to prevent another famine (out of justified fears due to famines happening in the 1980s, and early 1990s).

A lot of German-Americans are resentful because the U.S betrayed the idea of a democratic Germany when they set an atomic bomb on Berlin in 1946 (World War 2 lasted till 1948) thus leaving the French, and the Soviets to split up Germany. The British had just had a revolution, and had to evacuate to deal with that.

The Soviets set up governments within Southern Germany (Peoples Republic of Bavaria), and Austria. Northern Germany was divided into multiple demilitarized, occupied, and harshly reprimanded states whose purpose was to feed, clothe, and produce for France. Berlin is a walled off ruin, and the various governments are deployed against one another to keep them from uniting. Hence the French have a large say in how the European Federation is run.

Essentially the U.S is a presidential dictatorship using the guise of its republican traditions to run the country. People like to accuse the modern day U.S in real life of being an oligarchy, but in this case it actually is. The elections are political circuses filled with accusations of communism, interracial relationships, homosexuality, and any other tool the candidates can use to win.

As you can imagine the U.S is incredibly socially conservative with ideas such as homosexuality, interracial relations, and communism being outright heresy. In fact African-Americans have been forcibly relocated to districts within cities, and towns referred to as "Colored Autonomous Districts", and forced to carry passbooks wherever they go. A lot of the tactics in Apartheid South Africa (which still exists in this universe) have been brought over.
