It's a turn based tactical game best described as a game of poker with aliens and guns.
To win you need to know the odds and how to turn the odds in your favor.

Sounds like the Hunger Games, that last part does.

What would Google tell me? 'A turn-based strategy game about blah blah blah'? Abserdia explains it better, and in a more entertaining fashion. Why would I want Google?

Because Google would show you what it is instead of tell you... Because, to be truthful, Abserdia's explanation is so barebones that it could also be used to describe any number of sci-fi TBSG.

Those are assaults, and they're so useful when the opportunity arises.

Well, it's as intense as the Hunger Games.

Also, the classes are these:

Support: The Medic.
Assault: The Bloke with the Shotgun (and usually a cool cowboy hat when I'm playing)
Sniper: The... Sniper.
Heavy: Demolitions and Heavy Weapons Expert.

Then there are 2 other classes you can gain later on.

MEC Trooper: The Mech. You gain this much earlier than the next class.
Psionics Soldier: Mind control and all that.

It is really good. I was thinking more along the lines of that Warhammer 40k game, but yeah...

Stellaris is bae.

In XCOM? Yeah, the randomness is kinda dumb.

It's actually really well optimized.

My laptop can play it pretty well with some lag spikes every now and again, and it's like five years old or something.

If you can play CK2, or one of the more modern XCOM games, you can play Stellaris.

Well, that's probably because you can choose the classes.

Well, yeah. I mean, not super intelligent AI similar to Alex, mainly because of the huge cost of having so many for so many people.
But they're usually smart enough for somewhat advanced logic problems and a conversation.

That would be a good one.

I remember a story where a time-traveling girl with a dark and troubled past accidentally got herself drunk... when someone asked what she was doing she said 'I'm drowning my sorrows', and then went on a rant about how she could have been in the forties or fifties or sixties, maybe seventies, all sorts of great times, and how she hated existentialism almost as much as she hated herself, and all that... it was great. It was really great. XD Angst is great for making a nuisance of yourself when you're drunk.

Or how about that one guy who was such a sad drunk that when he saw a burnt-out streetlight he said 'It's so sad that it can't keep the streets lit up anymore, what will it do now?' :p

Nope, not at all.

The usual. Charlotte and Ajax, for example.
I'm just going to throw in anything I'd call interesting.
Laelynn and Stanley Kubrick? Yep. Throw it in.
