It can do some weird things to canon, there are some exceptions, though: JauneXPyrrha (she likes him, but him being a total idiot doesn't notice), ShuyaXNoriko (get on rather well, only get together during and after a game set up by the Japanese government gets schoolkids to kill each other), CaseXMolly (she's hired to be the muscle of an operation he's the hacker for, their relationship comes out of nowhere- literally- I was really surprised when they had sex about a third of the way through), DavidXAngela (friends for years, finally get together), there are LOADS of examples for and against.

The ships given for them hating each other: white collar worker (him) gets invited on-board a mercenary ship by a violent sociopath (her), she constantly threatens to kill him- he confronts her about her attitude and she starts to grudgingly get feelings for him (she still threatens to kill him though); he (a human and a criminal mastermind) kidnaps her (an elf and a police officer) to get her to divulge the secrets of the fairy race so he can get more money (sounds weird, I know, but I explained it rather badly); Germany scolds Italy constantly (because he's a failure), but they become friends anyway (whether you think there's something more is up to you); him and her fight constantly, but they play off against each other well (doesn't matter that I hate them both very much, I still ship it).

I explained those terribly, but I thought I might as well.
