Quirks do not a good character make. I would say that you just need to explore the character more. Set up his motivations, you've done a good job of showing us inside his head, but we really haven't seen much of what makes him, him.

I would also pull something out like: "guns are not conducive to magic," then pull out some even more BS reasoning, such as, "because they are created by humans and are not connected to nature in any way; they are artificial, cold, and meant only for murder."

This is a modern world RP. I think modern weapons should have some place in it. But you also have to think, why would you need a gun when you normally have magical powers that are much stronger than one. I think most of, if not all, of our characters so far have abilities quite a bit more destructive than small arms.
