Blood in the Pacific
Fly envious Time, till thou run out thy race,
Call on the lazy leaden-stepping hours,
Whose speed is but the heavy Plummets pace;
And glut thy self with what thy womb devours,
Which is no more then what is false and vain,
And meerly mortal dross;
So little is our loss,
So little is thy gain.
For when as each thing bad thou hast entomb'd,
And last of all, thy greedy self consum'd,
Then long Eternity shall greet our bliss
With an individual kiss;
And Joy shall overtake us as a flood,
When every thing that is sincerely good
And perfectly divine,
With Truth, and Peace, and Love shall ever shine
About the supreme Throne
Of him, t' whose happy-making sight alone,
When once our heav'nly-guided soul shall clime,
Then all this Earthy grosnes quit,
Attir'd with Stars, we shall for ever sit,
Triumphing over Death, and Chance, and thee O Time.
- John Milton: 'On Time'
[CONTENT Advisory: This roleplay will depict the horrors of war as accurately as possible within a fictional narrative. Graphic descriptions of violence will be depicted, albeit within the confines and rules of nation states. Discretion is highly advised and respect for the subject matter is to be expected]
"Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan..." Those words, immortalized in time, have brought the United States to war, with Japan, with Italy, and with Nazi Germany. Americans everywhere are furious, every notion of peace is long gone. These words ring in your ears. As an officer in the Department of the Navy, this means the end of your hard-earned shore leave. Whether or not you were new to the business, or if you had begun to make a career out of the Navy, you know that soon, all eyes will be on you; the weight of the world will be placed on your shoulders.
Soon enough, the Navy gives you the letter detailing where you need to be and when. They even call you for good measure. You, and many officers like you, are to report for duty in San Diego in three days time. You have been attached to Task Force Seven, First Fleet, CINCPAC. You will be in command of a team, and that team depends on your leadership to stay alive. Goodbyes are said across the country as a nation goes to war.
When you arrive in San Diego, you report to the man at the front desk. He takes record of your personal information, checks your security clearances, and assigns you to your command. He tells you where the ships are moored, where the, planes have landed, and where to go to get some hot chow. Before he lets you go, he gives you a logbook, stating that the Naval Department believes in having skippers' and captains' personal records filed for "moral, ethical, and regulatory purposes". The young man's last words to you?
"Welcome to the Pacific!"
