While I think such a project a sound decision, I believe it largely impossible or impractical without the support of either Washington, Oregon, or Canada. The latter is impossible-the former, though, is worth an attempt-unless you have another idea on how to connect such a pipeline to the Republic without crossing through possibly hostile territory?

Garestaer's Bedroom, Juneau, Alaska

A very tall soldier quietly opened the bedroom door, holding a sheet of paper. "Sir?" He approached the sleeping figure, and gently shook him. "Sir, wake up."

Garestaer wakes up with a start. "Wha--? What happened? Somebody chained themselves to a tree again?"

"No, sir. We cut the tree down anyway. Eberhardt responded to your proposal for a pipeline."

Garestaer sits up, turning on a light. He reads the response, and sighs. "He's right, there's no way we'd get that baby to Freedonia by land." He runs his fingers through his messy light-brown hair, thinking hard.

"What do you think Gaddafi would do?" the soldier asked, at random.

"Gaddafi would actually know what to do; I don't." Garestaer gets out of bed, folding his arms over his toned chest. "Get me a map."

The soldier opened Garestaer's desk and handed him a rolled-up map.

"Freedonia is smack-dab in the middle of the former America, but we'd have a hard-ass time getting that liberal retard, Trudeau, to let us throw the pipeline through his country." Garestaer stood up, pacing the room, staring at the map. "We can't afford to declare war on Canada, though, even though our military is better trained and slightly better armed, with more morale."

"What will you do about environmentalists, sir?"

"What I do with pacifists and terrorists; I'll lock them up, or just eliminate them completely. I can't control what Eberhardt does with his loonies, though, but if some Greenpeace shithead forces him to end the deal, he's screwed, and I'm screwed." Garestaer sat on the bed again. "I got it; we'll send the pipeline through the ocean. The only nation in the way is California if we go down, and around. I'll see if I can negotiate with Allen about letting the pipeline go through his country, maybe I'll sell him oil as well."

"Do you want me to pass this on to Eberhardt?"

"Yes, I do, and, next time, please let me know in the morning."

Such a deal is acceptable to us. We will begin preparing for missile shipments-though, given that your tank production capacity is currently actively at risk, some sort of collateral in the case of its inability to produce payment is necessary.

Strikes from civilians had pushed back advance units sent into the city, and the focus remained on the defensive fortifications being set up outside the city. The soldiers were trained for this-quick in, dig hard, hold the ground. The seizure of the airport had proved critical-with forces coming from all about them, West Virginian forces were added to their own heavy equipment being shipped in. Intentional detonations in the area surrounding the airport churned up the ground for any seeking to attack in that direction. Their numbers were too small to hold the city as a whole, yet letting the enemy into the city itself would be problematic. The decision was ultimately made to focus their forces south on the incoming forces there, and hold the airport-there would be the majority of their mechanized forces. Artillery, and infantry, however, were primarily transferred to the Grosse Ile Municipal, where they dug in as best they could in their limited time.

The F/A-18s sent in were primarily there for air defense, but rolled in another role. The arrival of the XB-70 had both terrified and enlivened the soldiers-the fighters were completely unable to catch the craft, but with its altitude, speed, and target, the majority of the bombs fell on the city itself, a cruel irony. While the AV-8Bs prepped at the secondary runway, and the elite defenders-four craft from Langley, flights of the craft launched swift, high-altitude bombing attacks at Bishop International and Capital City's runways, before returning.

The AU counterattack was largely successful. With the city itself largely given up, the soldiers there pushed through effectively, and the artillery placement in the north was effective-until spotters allowed the heavier and more numerous batteries on the Grosse Ile Municipal to engage.

The critical choice lay before them. Forces were approaching from the south and north. If they played their cards wrong, they would be surrounded and overrun-if they played them right, defeat in detail. They took the risk. The 103rd Regiment coming from the south was set upon by some fourteen thousand battle-hardened soldiers, with full cavalry and artillery support-but it was not that which would give them the victory. Once again, the power of the skies proved crucial. AV-8Bs, performing their infamous "hop" were devastatingly effective against NARU tanks, who lacked any such air support. Green infantry was facing against troops nearly twice their number, and mechanized-and the 29th was only minutes away. The pincer would close, and the combined forces would then seek to rush north to engage, while the Grosse Ile remained their emergency fallback.

It was working perfectly

The enemy had rushed to defend Detroit. Of course they had. Stull had seen it. It was the core of their industry, and with Chicago burning, the nation's heart. Stull had been gallivanting about behind their lines, up and down the roads, hitting small cities-no one saw him as a threat. Why should they? Nothing critical was in his reach, while the 82nd was poised to devastate a city of millions.

Stull, however, was after a city of forty thousand.

Lima Ohio-left open and vulnerable. Reports were sketchy, but just as expected. They knew the road on which he was heading, they did not know the significance.

Lima Ohio. Sleepy little town-and site of the only M1 Abrams production facility in the world.

It was going to be his.

On this rested everything. This was his goal, ultimately. Sure, he had other plans, but none survived contact with the enemy, and he could penetrate no further. He had bitten, it was time to hold.

Well, he had not really bitten. Not yet.

Napoleon had lost at Borodino because he refused to send in his Old Guard, refused to risk them.

He would not make the same mistake.

The core of his Air Force, the core of his ground force, flew above. The F-22s from Langley-blasted near all of them, and escorting transports for a HALO jump.

Performing the jump were his handpicked best-MARSOC.

They would jump, fall, hit terminal velocity, feel the wind rip back at their chute, scream towards the ground, land with a jolt, safe on earth.

Then they would go about their business with the discipline of a master, heedless of the terror they had just faced.

They would take the Lima Army Tank Plant, and Stull would take the city. The plant was closed for the day-no workers, no one to stop them. A security guard, perhaps, or two-collateral damage. Could not be helped. With a HALO jump they would be on them before they realized they were dropping.

While thousands would fight and die at Detroit, the war would be won here.

Southern Virginia

The Third continued its murderous press. Its opponents attempted to fight, but were outgunned, outnumbered, outtrained, and underequipped. The outcome was inevitable.

I strongly recommend against California. Beyond your relations with them, I think they would be a great deal more expensive to convince than another state-Oregon, in particular, seems fairly lax, and I believe would bite at this opportunity.

When Eberhardt's response is received, the soldier goes into Garestaer's complex, and slides the paper under the bathroom door. "It's from Eberhardt, sir."

Looking up from the newspaper, Garestaer sighs. "It couldn't wait till I'm done taking a bloody dump?!"

"If your dump is bloody, you should see a doctor."

"That's not what I meant, smart one." Garestaer carefully leaned over to grab the paper. After reading it, he turns it over and writes a response.

Eberhardt,

I guess I should trust you about Oregon. I will order crews to start gathering supplies for the pipeline as soon as a deal with Oregon is reached.
