The machine gunners in the bridge ruins suppressing the boarding party proved themselves a problem-but turning the grenade launchers to lob in the explosives solved it handily.

The sudden appearance of an aircraft caused problems-the Zephyr locked on Stingers, and hailed the aircraft, warning it to clear the area, and then identify itself, or be fired upon.

Still, they were too slow to stop the paratroopers from coming in-the ten men landed near the bow, with the Freedonians unable to intercept, being near the stern. The ones landing in the water would find the ships, traveling at over thirty knots, rapidly pulling away from them. The Zephyr's Captain ordered two life rafts dropped, one armed crewan aboard each with PFDs, to pick up the men.

Noting the threat of boarding after the three-boat assault, despite the success of the Bushmasters in averting it, men not manning critical stations rushed to the armory to arm the crews-the Freedonian mantra of "Every Man a Rifleman" would hopefully serve them well.

Despite the cover of smoke, the rapidity of their advance, their going to ground and the lack of a clear field of fire for the enemy, one of the men had been killed instantly-bullet through the brain, and two more were wounded.

The severing of relations was accepted. As diplomatic relations had been severed, the Erieans had no right to arrest the Blue Boys-they were either released, or-if the Erieans attempted to continue to detain them in violation of the law, killed their captors to join the exodus.

All Freedonian citizens were told to leave, and most accepted the offer, taking everything of value, and burning and salting their fields behind them-nothing could be bought from Freedonia, after all. The lynch mobs found themselves at the mercy of a people with perhaps the strongest gun culture the world has ever seen-some Freedonians were killed, any member of a lynch mob who was not supremely lucky enough to escape did. Some of the farmers refused to leave, and dug in on their land, weapons in hand, ready to defend what was theirs against the Erieans to the death. All Freedonian property was being moved out-the fortifications they had built were disassembled or destroyed, the food they had given was taken back, the airfields were stripped bare, and then destroyed entirely, as every Freedonian soldier, and most of the Freedonian citizenry left.

Within Freedonia, any Eriean citizen or known collaborators were rounded up and freely given the means to return to their own country-they were peaceably deported to their homeland.

The border with Erie was locked down. No one in, or out. The United Provinces were on their own.
