With the F-35's smaller magazine and range of only 2,200 kilometers on internal fuel, this problem is all the more obvious.
What about the F-22, F-16, or F-18? Could any reach them?
Virginia? Texas to Virginia is 1,402.8 miles (2,257.58 km). The F-35 has a range of 2,200 kilometers, 57.58 km too short.
The F-22 has a range of 2,960 kilometers, enough to reach Virginia but not enough to return. Assuming that they will also need to fight, the possibility of reaching a friendly airbase before they have to ditch is highly unlikely.
The F/A-18 has a range of 3,330, enough to reach Virginia, fight, and possibly also reach a base in Eberhardts territory. Then again, maybe not. I've got 6th and 9th Air Refueling Squadrons at Travis AFB with KC-10 Extenders, with a range of 7,080 kilometers could provide some help.
