I'm assuming we're going by the 12nm UN rule for territorial waters, so even with 12 nautical miles the island would still be visible and vice versa.

Plus unless you have sea-scanning radar set up on the island you wouldn't notice the destroyer without visible confirmation + us trying to contact you anyways.
