Actually, all of that land is very valuable x3 I think you need to read up on each of the nations, and their natural resources ^_^ African nations only struggle because they don't take advantage of their resources. Even Mauritania, which is in Sub-Saharan Africa, has nice resources... including a ridiculous amount of fish O_o. Like, if fish were to take over the world, it'd be there.

Resources that you are not able to get to yet, because you don't have the technology to even get those resources out of the soil. And the resources you do have access to are not going to be cost-effective to mine. Sweden has cheap iron, Britain has cheap coal, gold can still be found in the Americas and so can silver. The US has cheap cotton, Ireland produces tonnes of wool. Africa is not cost-effective at this point in time. And that leaves out the angry natives and the malaria, against which there is still no remedy. Oh, and Tsetse-disease. God, Africa is an awful continent for colonisation.

For example: South Africa is rich in gold. However, the gold reserves are inpure, and they require dynamite to get to. Once reached, it requires a cyanide compound to purify, and industrial machinery to further sift out the remains. All of which is still impossible in 1836.

I have some issues with Portugal's latest post.

How is the economy doing so well? You dnt say how...it just...is. Making more merchant ships doesn't magically increase trade. And your colonial economy would be taking a major hit, due to the fact that now slaves must be paid. There would be less product foe your new merchant ships, which would create a double deficit.

Saudi Arabia isn't a country yet.

How can the Portuguese state afford to pay to refurbish ships, expand the military, create a massive merchant fleet, and launch colonial expansions into places rife with disease and angry natives without creating a major deficit?

Austria would gain the brute force needed to gain control over Germany, Sweden would have a secure eastern border, and wouldn't have to worry about Finland.
