Okay. So in 2060, the UN built the Unity, filled it with a load of unstable nutjobs to blast off to Chiron, Alpha Centauri, and leave Earth to rot. Approaching landing, everyone was immediately woken up from cryosleep which made them all pissy while Captain Garland was assassinated. 7 factions (12 if you had Alien Crossfire) formed, with them hopping in the landing pods and descended down to Chiron to start life anew.

Now... what I'm thinking is that a massive war destabilised Planet, which resulted in the colonists revolting and taking over Planet (hopefully without getting all their nerves stapled). Maybe? I'm not sure.

I feel like they could be sort of backwater, or base their technology off of the Alpha Centauri tech tree. What ever system people are comfortable with is fine with me (though Alpha Centauri would be nice... though I feel like there would need to be a pretty damn good reason why Planet wasn't visible for all this time... resonance, anyone?).
