The character just doesn't bring anything new or interesting to the table, and it misses the bar set by other players by a country mile.

It's not really that. It's the fact that there's not much particularly interesting about him. Look at the current lineup of characters, will you?

You've got, just to name a few:

• A woman slowly being possesed by an eldritch entity, while trying to find her kidnapped child
• An alcoholic, drugged-up ex-scientist with one hand and a shady past.
• A guy that I wouldn't be shocked to see doing back-alley surgeries and stealing kidneys for profit.
• A trio of girls, each a variation off one another from other dimensions
• A robot cowboy
• A Nazi from another reality
• A crazy guy that was possessed by another eldritch entity
• A trap assassin with sonic powers
• A guy in a mask with a letterman jacket murdering people to stop an ancient cult worshipping an extradimensional god-demon.

At this point, new admits to the story need to bring something unique to the table to really stand out in the story. The fact that he's an intellectual prodigy with god-like firearm powers doesn't help.
