The Struggle for Antrinea

Antrinea has always been a nation with a troublesome past, 50 years previously a revolution overthrew the royal family and set up a parliamentary republic with the State Duma holding power. All was peaceful and for 30 years a series of progressive left wing governments led Greater Antrinea through a period of prosperity and peace. However, a change in national opinion caused the left wing to fall from favour and the right wing rose. For 20 years right wing governments led the nation and, though spending was cut and the left wing elements in the Duma became more aggressive, the nation saw no general change. That was until the presidency of Ruslan Vitalievich Strelnikov. Strelnikov was a risk taker from Tobria Province and he envisioned mass right wing reforms to the government. These were not welcomed in the Duma and tensions grew and grew throughout Strelnikov presidency.

Tensions came to a head at the fateful Bruskalov protest. A soldier, a lowly recruit, dispatched to keep the peace during the protest, became spooked. A bullet, one single bullet, shattered the peace of 50 years as the protest quickly went from peaceful to violent. The protests spread and spread throughout the country. The fuel to the fire came in the form of a Parliamentary announcement, the Duma, radicalised by left wing politicians, renounced the government and declared it unfit to rule. To Strelnikov this was unacceptable, a Duma corrupted by the left had no rule over him. He rejected the calls to resign and the nation took sides.

Now, a year on, war rages across the nation...

Biography: Théo Dion was born in Baxten as a Baxtonian citizen. He was very much into guns and war, starting to hunt at an early age and enlisting as a soldier at the age of 16 (he lied about his age). However, being in the army at lowly ranks wasn't what he was looking for. He had always been a good military strategist, and he wanted to command a group of his own. So, at the age of 23, he left the army and formed the mercenary group by the name of the Epsilon Corps. He and his Corps travelled to distant lands, fighting for whoever the highest bidder was. However, a small civil war broke out between Baxtonian Imperialist and the Republicans. Dion was able to convince the rebels that his group was right for their cause, and they accepted his offer. Dion brought his group to barricade in a small Swiss town, where the heavily outnumbered Epsilon Corps was attacked by the Imperial Troops. Dion got into a truck with other troops, and troops and civilians beside them followed suit. They left Baxten and crossed the border into Greater Antrinea. There, Dion established a new town by the name of Avalon Prime. Their, he and the other survivors of the attack built up a new town where they could live out there live in peace and harmony. However, some lost hikers found them, and news spread of Avalon Prime's existence. Dion tried to prevent people from learning about the city, so he ordered that walls were built around the town. That was, however, after an influx of people seeking a new start came into the city. This attracted the attention of the regional government, who told the national government about this non-Antrinean city in their land. Troops were sent in to evict the people, but a watchman saw this. He alerted the city, and they prepared for an attack. Dion had recently completed the wall, which allowed Avalonians to go on the top and fire at the Antrinean troops. They had a long firefight, eventually repelling the Antrinean troops away. This established Dion and the rest of Avalon as a part of the struggle for Antrinea.

Backstory: At the age of 23, Dion left the army and formed the mercenary group by the name of the Epsilon Corps. He and his Corps travelled to distant lands, fighting for whoever the highest bidder was. However, a small civil war broke out between Baxtonian Republicans and the Imperialist. The Epsilon Corp the one group hired by the rebels, and they were stationed in a small Swiss town. When the Imperialist attacked their garrison, they were severely outnumber. Dion and his men retreated to Greater Antrinea. They stopped in the middle of nowhere, and decided that they had to build a little village as to not be discovered by natives or rogue Baxtonian Imperialist. A decent amount of time passed, but they were soon discovered by some lost mountain climbers. Word got out about this commune in the middle of nowhere, and a surprising amount of people flocked to the little town. Soon, it became a sort of city-state, being able to support itself. The population stayed at 15,000, with 5000 people joining the military of Avalon Prime. This attracted the attention of the regional government, who told the national government about this non-Antrinean city in their land. The nation sent in a small amount of troops to tell the people of the city to leave. However, they did not realize that the city was armed and would fight back. And fight back they did. The people of Avalon Prime repelled the troops of Antrinea from their city, and sealed their fate as a rebel city.

A few months later, shortly after gaining the rank of Captain, Ioseph retired from the military to become a political official. However, he was very unpopular, due to his Fascist views.

Biography: Born to the Spenovich political dynasty of Antrinea, Ultear was raised since birth to become a major figure in the nation's government. The Spenovich family, originally close advisers of reform prior to the Revolution that dethroned the monarchy, continued its track of political power by taking high levels of leadership in the left wing Altrinean government. As such, the Spenovich's were a wealthy and very well heard of dynasty. Ultear, born into the family, was raised to take command of the nation's armed forces while her older brothers were slated for political positions in the Republican government. Her early childhood marked with private schooling, military tutoring, and living in the shadow of her siblings in the eyes of her parents. She was slated for military life as her parents already had the older brothers to continue the legacy, and didn't wish to waste time building her up to compete with her own family in the political arena. Thus, she felt neglected and deeply alienated by her family from an early age.

As the right wing took over the government, the Spenovich's became one of the leading groups of the Duma to oppose the new policies. Her childhood continued on, as her parent's hoped that the state of affairs would go back to what they were prior, and so as soon as she was able she was given a high ranking officer rank in the Antrinean Army. Ultear, through both her family's ties and her capabilities as a military reformer and strategist, made her the youngest to achieve the rank of general in the nation's history at 29. As the Spenovich's continued their political campaign against the now President Nartuzcky, Ultear distanced herself from them to protect her career, and her brother, now high profile politician of the Duma Vlaidmir Spenovich, became a leading figure in protests and conflict with the right wing President. Widely accepted and praised by the left base across the nation, tensions flared when in after the Duma disavowed the President, Vladimir was killed in a violent protest that was put down by the President.

Infuriated by the actions taken by the President and disheartened by the lack of coordination taken by the Duma in the time of crisis, left her position in the military and declared the formation of the New Democratic Front, dedicated to overthrowing the tyrannical President and reforming the Duma. The NDF laid the blame of the current state of affairs on the Antrinean government as a whole, blaming both the Duma and the President alike. Ultear pulled support from those disenfranchised by the government, socialists, supporters of her brother, and allies from her former military career and established the new faction in the southern province of Astrakayna, controlling the major city of Tuvanya and making it the temporary capital of the new faction.

Backstory: Formed by disenfranchised military leaders and political dissenters from both the Duma and the President's administration, the NDF is set up to bring down the tyranny of the President and his right wing regime, while also reforming the Duma that allowed the chaos to happen. The NDF was brought together under Ultear Spenovich, a former high ranking military official and member of the Spenovich political family. The New Democratic Front pulls heavily from disenfranchised military and political officials, democratic reformers, and socialists across the nation with the final goal of the movement to restore Antrinea to a socialist nation.

Political/Governmental Structure: The NDF is run currently by the People's Council, a small body of officials that oversee the operations of government from several positions known as 'spheres', which encompass several policies and departments similar to how ministries operate. Among the most used spheres are the Sphere of National Liberation, Espionage, Public Relations, Internal, and Technology. As per the state of affairs, the Council is headed by the leader of the Sphere of National Liberation, General Ultear Spenovich, who serves as acting head of state and government as well as commander of the official People's Army. While the current government of the NDF is considered to be undemocratic, the People's Council assures that upon the liberation of the nation democracy will be returned to the people.

Backstory: A remote southern province of Antrinea, Ayatragrad is a more recent addition to Antrinea, having been annexed in 1986. From the start, there has been resentment against the leadership of Antrinea, as though the two nations are culturally similar, their divergent history has caused marked differences between the two, resulting in the rise of Ayatragradian nationalism. Upon the outbreak of the Antrinean Civil War, this nationalism was harnessed by Karl Orlov, the governor of the province. Though Orlov is actually half-Jaslandian through his mother’s side, the people of Ayatragrad embraced him as their hero, and he was declared President of the Republic of Ayatragrad.

Political/Governmental Structure[If applicable]: The government of Ayatragrad is best described as a plutocratic, limited democracy. Upon becoming president, Karl Orlov promulgated a liberal constitution that secured universal suffrage, free elections, and free press, among other liberties. Though Orlov himself is indifferent to democracy, he supports it to placate the people, confident that his continued popularity will ensure Orlov will have a long rule.

However, beneath this democratic governance, lies a web of corruption and self-enrichment. Special taxes and fees go directly to the President and his Swiss bank account, and some other government officials also seek to benefit from the corruption. The President has filled the government with his cronies and family members. President Orlov has also been criticized for sometimes ruling through decree, showing that his respect for democracy only applies if the people vote the way he wants. Still, for the time being, Ayatragrad is a stable, mostly-democratic nation ruled with a fair hand.

Biography: The second son of a prominent family in Antrinea, Karl Orlov’s father Grigori Orlov was a notable conservative politician in the Duma who was occasionally allied to the various right-wing presidents of Antrinea. Karl Orlov’s mother was Maria Escobala, an actress from the Jaslandian province of Maroka. As a child, Karl was described as a rambunctious and witty child who got decent (if not exceptional) grades.

With the elder Orlov becoming as high-ranked as Vice President, the Orlovs enjoyed a life of luxury, living in a mansion on the outskirts of the capital. Karl and his siblings (older brother Boris and younger sister Nadia) were educated at elite private schools, and seemed to get the best of everything.

After graduating from the University of Oswilgrad, Karl used his family connections to get a job as an executive in a mining corporation headquarted near Polvata. 3 years later, Karl ran for a seat on the city council of Polvata, beginning Karl’s ascent into politics.

As the only child of Grigori Orlov to go into politics (Boris founded an IT company, while Nadia became a bank executive), Karl was considered the sole heir of the Orlov political dynasty, and he rapidly climbed up the political ladder. His charm and populist rhetoric made him popular with voters, while his family name and straightforwardness made him popular with his colleagues in the Duma. In 1984, Karl Orlov married Natasha Romanova, the daughter of another prominent political family.

In 2010, after serving in the Duma for nearly 20 years, Orlov was appointed Minister of the Interior. A competent administrator, Orlov oversaw the police force and intelligence gathering of Antrinea, and instituted reforms that increased the ministry’s efficiency and effectiveness. However, while Karl Orlov was an effective administrator, he did not foresee the rise of Ruslan Vitalievich Strelnikov, and Orlov sided with the anti-Strelnikov faction in the Duma. As a result, upon Strelnikov gaining power in 2013, Orlov was removed from office, and effectively exiled from the capital and the political scene of Antrinea by being appointed governor of the discontent and isolated province of Ayatragrad.

Believing he could use his office to his advantage, Orlov used political operatives (including his daughter Yelizaveta) to gain influence with the various factions in provincial politics, ensuring Orlov’s dominance of the local political scene. One of the groups particularly impressed by Orlov was Ayatragradian nationalists, who saw Orlov as a reformer who could bring about change and campaign for the rights and autonomy of Ayatragad. This connection was a powerful asset in 2015, when civil war tore Antrinea apart. Some radicals in the provincial assembly thought the time was ripe to assert Ayatragradian independence, and to their surprise, Orlov threw in his support with the independence advocates. Orlov’s popularity made him the natural leader of the independence movement, and when a revolution in the provincial capital kicked out the Antrinean officials, Karl Orlov was acclaimed president of the new Republic of Ayatragrad.

With Orlov enjoying popularity among all classes of society, most of the province peacefully accepted the authority of Orlov and the new republic, with isolated rebel and pro-government forces quickly being defeated or pushed out of the country. Orlov made himself even more popular by issuing a constitution that guaranteed rights such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly. Elections were held shortly thereafter, and Orlov and his supporters were voted back into power by a landslide. Orlov filled the government with his cronies and family members (his younger daughter Yelizaveta was chief of the Ayatragradian intelligence agency, his son Dmitri was made commander of the First Army that protected the capital, and his older daughter Lyuba was made Deputy Minister of Defense). Though Karl Orlov is an honest and decent man who wants to help the people of Ayatragrad, he never forgets his own family’s interests, and his rule has seen a great expansion in the wealth of Orlov and his family.

Biography: The middle child of Karl Orlov, Yelizaveta (along with her younger brother Dmitri) often felt ignored as a child, with her parents focusing on oldest child Lyuba, who achieved high marks and showed an aptitude for military tactics. While Yelizaveta (called Eliza by friends and family) was not as book-smart as her older sister, she did have a shrewd mind and deep knowledge of people and human psychology. Though the two had got along well enough, there is still some tension between Lyuba and Yelizaveta (Lyuba is critical of Yelizaveta’s harsh methods and ruthless personality, while Yelizaveta still resents Lyuba for being a perfect child that monopolized her parents’ attention), and instead, Yelizaveta has grown close to and allied with her similarly-ignored brother Dmitri.

At age 18, Yelizaveta entered the National University of Antrinea, just outside the capital. Yelizaveta was a diligent student; she had a few friends, but no one fully knew her. When her father was appointed Interior Minister, Yelizaveta got an internship at the interior ministry. Yelizaveta was particularly interested in the ministry’s spy work conducted through the National Intelligence Administration, with the experience sticking with her to this day. Upon graduating from college, Yelizaveta got a job as a secretary. While Yelizaveta put on a cheerful façade, in reality, she hated the position, as she thought she was capable of much more, and she was derided by her male colleagues. However, when her father was disgraced and given an exile appointment of governor of Ayatragrad in 2013, Yelizaveta become a political operative for her father, discreetly gathering information on local officials, and determining how they could be of use to governor Orlov.

Upon her father’s assumption of the Ayatragradian presidency in 2015, Yelizaveta was put in charge of the new General Intelligence Agency of Ayatragrad. Yelizaveta quickly organized the agency, and partly through her intelligence work, the isolated pockets of resistance to her father’s rule were quickly put down. While Yelizaveta has now become more favored by her father, she now seeks power, believing her father is too weak, and that the democracy of Ayatragrad will not be able defend the nation. Though President Orlov has turned down many of Yelizaveta’s proposals (such as the establishment of a secret police force and cracking down on dissent), Yelizaveta has not given up her ideals, and longs for the day when her father will be gone from power so her iron hand can bring Ayatragrad to greatness.

Biography: Artyom Kuznetsov was born in Mykolisky, Antrinea to two factory workers, and attended school there as well. He became involved in anarchist and communist politics, much like his parents, at a young age (15, in fact), joining the Youth Wing of the Antrinean Free Worker's Party, a anarcho-communist party. He eventually ended up one of the top anarchist political theorists in Antrinea, having various books to his name, all sold for free. He spent many years, off and on, in prison, for his activism against the government, and has also served in the army, though he was drafted. After the civil war started, his military expertise and prominent position among Antrinean anarchists and communists.

Due to the vast array of different far-left ideologies making the army up, there is some infighting, though it isn't widespread as most members realize that they have a better chance of winning if they stay united. The army is more focused on guerilla warfare and terrorist attacks (as long as they try not to kill any civilians) than conventional warfare, due to their loose organization and less training in conventional methods of warfare.

Backstory: The Worker's Democratic Union is a shaky union between the pre-civil war communist parties and organizations and the pre-civil war anarchist parties and organizations. Comprised of many different far-left ideologies, the union is somewhat loosely held together. Some members disagree on how to fight the war and what to do after its over if they win. The group has no official leader, though Artyom Kuznetsov is considered the de-facto ruler. It has been subject to some infighting, but its not quite crippling. The union also supports the Republic of Ayatragrad's independence movement.
Political/Governmental Structure[If applicable]: Direct Democracy; all citizens can vote on and propose laws, and collectively manage the functions of a "state". While there is no official leader, Artyom Kuznetsov is considered the de-facto leader by most people.
