If anything that will probably only strengthen the resistance as people join them after you start destroying their food supplies just to try and snuff out the rebels. Not to mention there will be other powers in the area who would be all to happy to arms the rebels and outright assist them.

Oh, well, I'm sure the Japanese could bring in the numbers. They do have Muskets(?) and Cannon from the Portuguese a century or two back. But, looking at the Dutch's attempted invasion of the Philippines, they were less successful. I'd imagine the Spanish there still have some fighting spirit.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think the Spanish Navy would outclass the ships the Japanese would send. I think Japan would have better luck with Korea. Then again, the Chinese could always bring in the numbers. The Chinese aren't that weak, yet.
