CHARACTER APPLICATION

PLAYER INFORMATION
NS nation nickname: Atre

Skill Level (beginner, intermediate, advanced): I have some roleplaying experience as my now obsolete nation, Atreidun Universe, but I would still say beginner.

How often can you post? Probably 1 to 4 time a week.

CHARACTER PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Character Name: Deacon Marloww

Character Gender: male

Species (nation personification, human, alien, etc): Human

Age: 24

Appearance: He is six foot four inches, two hundred twenty pounds, muscled "farmboy" physique, blue eyes, button nose, full lips, straight white teeth, short black hair normally styled in a side part pompadour, normally dresses in "operator style" with tactical pants and vest along with a baseball cap sunglasses, hiking shoes and a pack.

URL to Character Picture, if any: http://www.sidestorygames.com/uploads/4 ... ig.jpg?323

Character Occupation: Entered a Security organization as a basic guard under his father's supervision on his eighteenth birthday, spent a year as a basic guard while training before being elevated to security member for locations abroad. At 24 he decided experience was necessary and wished to go into the armed forces of his home nation and had just graduated boot camp.

OBJECTIVES
Primary Objectives are your character's main goals. This should be the thing that drives their part of the plot. When not engaged in stories, these are what occupy your character's thoughts or keep them busy. Examples include: acting on a desire to become a powerful and respected leader; attempting to overcome some horrible thing in the past which hinders the character on a day-to-day basis; seeking to break out their shell by overcoming profound shyness (getting involved with stories); comping to terms with a major flaw that inhibits the character from reaching full potential; etc.

Secondary Objectives are minor goals. These should be an undercurrent for your character when they are engaged in stories or on their free time. Examples include: acquiring weapons and becoming proficient with each one; improving sundered relations with a companion; improving their reading comprehension; mastering news spells; researching a cure for a plague; etc.

Objectives such as "making friends" or "finding love" are NOT acceptable. Please put much though into your character's objectives - they are what flesh out your character and one of the most important aspects necessary to portray the character as 3D.

Primary Objective: His primary objective is essentially to build or take over a sizeable military or paramilitary force in his new home.

Secondary Objectives: He wishes to build a life, including a wife and children hopefully, in this new home. He doesn't care about finding love really so much as establishing a foundation in his new surroundings, though he wouldn't complain for finding love.

MUNDANE SKILLS
These do NOT require points. These are the average, daily things your character can do. Examples are "drive a car", "speak one Foreign Language", "play a guitar", "write poetry". Some mundane skills come from your bio and are freebie. A soldier has gone through Basic training. However, Medic, martial arts or sniper would be a Specialized Skill or Talent.

List Mundane skills here
Basic housekeeping, cooking, cleaning, etc.
Basic Marksmanship and Weapon Handling with a preference toward shotguns and Handguns
Basic First aide and Hiking survival
Capable driver
Capable writer

SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND TALENTS
These are specialized skills that set you apart from the average person. You have 7 points to spend here. Examples are swordsmanship, sniper, coercion, medic, wizarding, piloting etc.

  • Ability 1 and Points Spent: Perception, 4, for example environmental as well as personal and non-personal awareness capable of noticing minor changes and actions that hint at something being different, like sudden silence of birds, a shifted stance of a possible foe, etc.
  • Ability 2 and Points Spent: Athletics, 2, higher than the average person but nothing great he is a capable opponent in fighting as well as running or climbing which he enjoys.
  • Ability 3 and Points Spent: Manipulator, 1, Capable of manipulating others emotions and thought process in minor ways through conversation.
  • Ability 4 and Points Spent:

OPTIONAL SUPERNATURAL CHARACTERISTICS
You have 7 points to spend here on supernatural skills or abilities. Sonic Scream, Levitation, Spell Casting, Shape Shifting etc. Superman MUST have his kryptonite thus weaknesses are things which inhibit the ability. Restrictions are what can't they do with their power or what balances it. They can only use it when they genuinely need it? They can't use it for more then five minutes without serious side-effects? Some things are allowed without points. A pegasus has wings thus it can fly. A raptor is fast thus no points are spent in speed. These "natural" abilities should be listed here, however. What isn't allowed: teleportation beyond a few feet; the ability to alter or go back/forward in time.

  • Ability 1: Power detection
    Power Level: 4
Strengths: Capable of identifying and specifying different powers in other beings. The closer he gets to them the better he can sense the abilities and extent of the abilities a person has.
Weaknesses: It takes a lot of focus to realize something more than just that a person with power is nearby. This stops him from doing anything else but breathing, slowly walking, or slowly talking. This process is also painful as the more he focusses the worse headache he acquires, eventually leading to a brain hemorrhage should he try and gain detailed information about someone from a large distance.
Restrictions: He must get closer and closer to someone to identify more about them. Within 500 yards he can sense someone with powers is nearby but not a direction, or anything else, within three hundred yards he generally knows where they are. Etc.

  • Ability 2: Minor Healing Aura
    Power Level: 3
Strengths: Capable of Healing himself and one other in minor ways for a short time.
Weaknesses: He can only do it for a short time on minor injuries and only one other person and himself at once. It also intensifies the pain for both the victim and himself until he finishes attempting to heal an injury or does heal it.
Restrictions: many major injuries or traumas are far too much for him to handle and even with minor injuries the pain can make it a long and arduous task.

MAGICAL OR SPECIAL ITEMS
If it's not on this list, your character doesn't have it. Magical items are rare and hard to come by. Please list what they can/can't do - treat them like a supernatural thing. Items not allowed: anything that can alter time; anything that allows a character to teleport beyond a few feet.

List:

BACKGROUND
Be detailed please. You must explain how your character aquired their skills, talents, abilities, and special items. Wrap your primary and secondary objectives into it.

Education or Training: While living a generally average life his father was hard on him and railed on him about training and exercise and while he was not initially so hard on him about weapons capabilities and dealing with others, when Deacon turned 18 his father pushed him into the training programs available to all members of their security company hoping to draw out a few Para-military types. Following this and several years working security abroad he joined the military and went through the basic training.

Character Background/Biography: Born to a historic military family Deacon was taught from a young age about the importance of the defenders of mankind. His father's and ancestor's sense of martial pride and duty was ingrained in him from a young age. He quickly grew up, his initial instinct was to join the military straight out of highschool but his father instead convinced him to take his time and enter the company his father now worked for. While his father was far more advanced than he, taking part in jobs overseas regularly, Deacon became determined to reach his full potential. Completing the training courses offered by the company Deacon set himself up to head around the world for low key security jobs in global hot-spots. He experienced the chaos of being attacked for the first time at the age of 21 and would never forget it.

Upon returning from his jobs around the world and realizing he was unable to move up in the company to more important missions and roles without military experience, he joined the military and subsequently left for boot camp. In every sense of the word Deacon breezed through most of the training. His strong athletic skills and small experiences already in some of the combat scenarios allowed him a far easier time than his compatriots in dealing with the harshness of the training. It was still hard even on him and he came away with valuable knowledge and training he would undoubtedly need for the road ahead.

Brief Description for Bio: Fun loving and driven individual with a proud military history in his family. He also had just begun his journey as a soldier when he war brought here for no observable reason. He has a recent past of being a security specialist for places abroad and is well built for this mentally and physically. He seeks to find a way to use his strengths to his advantage and attain a minor notability in his new environment.

Please direct questions to the OP or the CoOPs. Thanks for applying. Bear in mind that it can take several days for applications to be approved; check back often.

Nice application.

As Fvaar mentioned, he might have problems with the power sensing ability. Is it for only supernatural abilities (flying, laser beam eyes etc), or does it also cover obscure things like the the Force or magic potential? I'll rule that it doesn't sense psionics because those aren't technically a "power" but more of a physical trait.

He might find he's experiencing sensory overload. For example, if he's in the lobby and attempting to sense if Primordial has power, he'll pick up on that power, but what about all the powerful objects on Primordial? And then there are other people in the lobby, and they have power. The lobby itself is fabricated via a "god" of sorts, thus it radiates more power than all the people put together.

Fvaar brought up Neste, a potent psionicist. She can sense just about everything, but also is engineered by her master species to detect magic. Neste can easily tap into a 40K god's mind - it would render her instantly insane thus she knows to avoid them. I imagine trying to sense Primordial would open up the door for all sorts of trouble for Deacon - Cthulhu lurks in those depths.

From an OOC standpoint, some players choose to keep their character powers cloaked for various reasons. It's their call whether or not a character can sense if they are anything but ordinary. I don't mind sensing abilities in characters provided their handler realizes that "nope, sorry" means a character with powers can actively block attempts or else the player themselves wish to use that secret as part of character development.

For a variety of characters, such as the things that watch over the Gates, or the Dragons, or some of the Aliens - it won't take an ability to tell they're powerful. It's readily apparent by how quickly they kill someone for meddling.

"Magic or Special Items" includes things such as laptops, weapons, etc.

I didn't fully comprehend the possible problems with his power. May I change it. Also may I add special items I just assumed they were magic only.

Certainly. Edits are always allowed prior to application approval. You'll need to add items, too. Don't go too crazy on weapons but by all means add something he's comfortable with using.

And now.......

[OP ANNOUNCEMENT]

FREEZE IC PLAY, PLEASE.

Stay calm. Nobody is in trouble. lel

We've had some concerns and questions arise.
We (myself and the CoOPs) are going to solicit our awesome PLeeps for ideas, suggestions, and other goodies.

No, UA is not going away, nor are any other play zones.

Yes, you are all doing a fantastic job with your stories and characters.

Yes, we still love you.

Just pretend this is the part where we put down the dice
and push aside the gaming board because
pizza has just arrived.

Slaps hands together. We gonna do us some old school worldbuilding!

Stand by.....

It will take a few minutes to explain. This is only an OOC heads-up. My IC one will go away once play resumes. That should happen as soon as we're done with our group mischief.

This is normal for PL. Most character apps, even those written by veteran PL players, need some revision before they're accepted. Deacon is a good character, though, with a solid backstory. His power-detecting power is fine, but as with many PL powers, one just needs to be aware that it's not all upside.

[PL STAFF ANNOUNCEMENT]

WHAT MAKES PL, PL?

PL allows you to play everything and anything near and dear to your heart.

WHAT MAKES IT WORK?
Balance. This is achieved by not only the OP and CoOPs but also the players. It means that no one character is “the best”. All characters are important. Each and every player matters.

WHAT HAS ALWAYS WORKED BEST?

Our prior settings (Vaffelhelm and Bielefeld) worked because characters were at liberty to enjoy the elements found within. Yes, we had trouble with some players pushing things too much. That’s where the staff stepped in. We didn’t operate under many city rules. “Be good to each other, don’t mutilate the people” were fine. When players crossed the line, CoOPs or myself stepped in to put a stop to it.

But it’s more than that. These settings worked because players breathed a part of themselves into it. That’s missing in Epic. We lack a sense of spirit. Zones are nice but players can’t really leave their mark. The play area is too large to fully breathe in.

Many moons ago, we ran a story called Personification Player. In this story, we inserted ourselves as the world’s inhabitants. We had to write our city back into being. This is how we ended up with so many beautiful descriptions. Prior to that, Swith worldbuilt a frame - Bielefeld - and, in tribute to the players she loves (which is all of you, assholes), she added in small elements. Statues tucked into corners. A special park. A mosaic.

Bielefeld worked because it was large. Zaniness on a minor scale went unnoticed. Nobody batted an eye when a raptor ran by at 75mph. Citizens were used to seeing strange things. The city government, while faceless most of the time, stayed out of daily business. This is, after all, life. There were police. There were firemen. There were shops and plazas, museums, and galleries. Mostly, there was a sense of belonging.

We’ve lost that. It shows. We’ve lost players. We’re about to lose some more. When the vets turn to me and say, “Please, can we have that back in some form?”, I listen. This isn’t a matter of dislike for what’s been done so far in Epic. It’s a sincere desire to bring back the things that were comforting.

WHAT I PROPOSE TO DO
First, I do not want to strip away anything from UA. Agy and Slo have invested a lot of effort into it. It’s a sound place for gaming. Some people like it. Others can’t find a way to embrace it. It doesn’t feel like home for some.

What I propose is shifting UA’s purpose to keep it fully intact as a MT city filled with gritty details, conspiracies, corrupt government, quaint neighborhoods, the university - all of it stays as is and where it is.

What replaces it as a primary “hang out zone”? Your imaginations. Anything is possible in PL. Anything, provided we have players on board and willing to work as a large team. What I propose is gathering the OP and CoOP powerbases to put into place something that you, each of you, sees as essential. All this can be done as Klaus and Giovenith return through the portal through Pearlelei’s grace.

The Burrows, which is just a jumble of shit at the moment, becomes our canvas. Let’s expand it. We have a small government in place. This government actually likes the Residents. Let’s push it by having Demens drop in elements “saved” from Bielefeld and other zones. After all, we all need a vacation. I miss those shacks from the island. We do have a beach close by.

The question is, how big do you want to go. How much old (the restaurants and parks etc) do you want? What new things would you like to see (Like Torsi’s pub, or other excellent ideas players have had)? Swith has asked for the giraffe to return.

The theme needs to remain inclusive. The Burrows is nested between UA, the Wold, and the Outermark. It makes sense to have magic, urban tones and alien stuff in the mix. These things, of course, are done in moderation. It’s a sensical approach. And yes, the mayor is still a cervitaur.

The Burrows would extend itself, placing the city at the Building’s front door. Sure, we’ll keep the sheep fields and other greenery. We’ll have those forests in place. But this allows your characters to have the “world” outside their door. Most of our stories never left the cities anyway. Heh.

There are some caveats however. You need to keep your character antics small scale. TF gun play wouldn’t be a big deal if done between players. Corrupting the townsfolk souls to feed to the God of Skittles would get noticed. Players would need to temper their fun by respecting the play zone so other players can enjoy it. No invasions. No blowing up buildings. No abusing the townsfolk. Use your common sense and apply some restraint. You have Gates if you want to go full-on Cthulhu on something's ass (term of speech to signify chaos, not singling out Primmers here).

One element that will return: cultists. This isn’t ego. They served as a police force when players did Stupid Shit. Likewise, the Conservators were there to prevent players from infringing on the zone. Min and Swith would also have their “secret forces” (or not so secret) in place. Players shouldn’t have to shoulder the burden of handling other player’s fuckups. That’s on us, your humble staff. We’ve always tried our best to keep things running smoothly.

We’d like your input on this. We can’t do it without you. We need you to make Epic feel like a home.

Thanks, and thank you for sticking with us through thick and thin, through revisions, through all the "OOPS!" moments, and for always making an effort to improve. We appreciate all of you.

I was literally just about to post this before the big spooky IC halt:

Finally got around to this, because of this.

~Rainbow Bridge Toy Shop~

A quaint little shop that speaks of lullabies and quiet, sunny afternoons spent safely tucked away in the nursery. Here, dreams come true as a pony works away creating all sorts of wondrous toys for the North Warnborough village children to play with. Quality is put into each creation, highly durable, safe, and beautifully designed all for a reasonable price. Personalized commissions - alphabet blocks with your child's favorite colors, or a dollhouse resembling your own home perhaps - can be requested for a slightly higher fee. A small play area filled with sample toys for children to explore for themselves is also available!

Owned and operated by Mr. Fortunato Pasternak and his daughter, Alma.

Would UA be downgrading to MT or can it remain PMT? Because that requires some edits, which I can make, I'm just not sure if that was a typo or if that was intentional?

Also, 100% for the collaborative worldbuilding of the Burrows. They need life, and what better way to provide it than by piecing it together by the people who live closest by - the Residents (and thus, the players).

PMT is alright. Add back in the other elements you stripped out. You both had a good build going.

Gio, perfect! Also I may need to collab with you on the G/K return to make things work, if you don't mind.

I'd propose a gaming cafe for teens? I could run an NPC for that, since I've had a character idea in mind that doesn't fit anywhere, though I'm worried about any new characters from me.

Katya's pub...near the tavern? That way you can get drunk and walk over to Katya's shop for coffee to fight it off, lol.

Also, just how strong are fantasy elements in Galli? Like horse and sword and knight fantasy? Or maybe just something themed after that? Like, running a mercenary or adventuring guild for local threats and beast hunting, just small jobs and missions for less civilized folk?

The Wold is a mixture of high fantasy and magic/magi-tech. Less on the tech aspect tho.

Ooh. I like this a lot.

An idea popped into my head about a park/preserve/gardens dedicated to holding exotic plants from all across Gallimaufry. It will be sectioned off in biomes, like tropical, taiga, Mediterranean, desert maintained either by magic, tech, or both. Also thought of maybe the proprietor would send people off to far off places to acquire exotic plants for the preserve and reward them for it.

Maybe pull in some Market District? I do think that adding new stuff would be nice, but the Bielefeld details give us somewhere to start. Strokes on the canvas, if you will. It's a lot easier to paint something once you've got some features sketched in. Maybe we should try to figure out some general categories of hangouts we/our characters would like, so that we don't spend substantial effort fleshing out places no one is interested in beyond local color.

Gaming sounds fun; however, we risk recursion :p

Oooh, cool, Kale! If expanded to maybe a section holding unusual specimens from the omniverse, that could result in missions...
Edit:DYAC!

Come to the light side.  We have teamwork, waffles, popcorn, grape juice, and way too much ramen.

This is just my opinion, but I think it'd be cool if the Burrows kept its village charm with all the restaurants and shops. That's honestly all I really have to contribute unless you want me to think up a weaponsmithing thing real quick.

Name It: Pleasant Park
What is it: A clearing partially-occupied by refugees from UA and also the site of a lush garden with ponds, verandas, benches, and trees to nap beneath
Is it city run: No
What services does it supply: Food carts, a place for relaxation
Where is it located Agricultural District (pasture and fields where those sheep are)

If you want, describe it:

More a happy accident than a formal creation, Pleasant Park was founded by a group of wanted criminals, political enemies, refugees, and voluntary exiles from Urbem Ascalon. Seeking refuge from the city and finding camaraderie among themselves and an idyllic location near the Burrows agricultural district, they settled and founded their own community there.

Seeking peace with the Burrows, they offered to incorporate the land they were occupying as a public space - a park for Burrow residents. Pleasant Park was named for the beautiful gardens that had been cultivated by the UA residents with Burrow assistance, and the clearing became a favorite spot for picnics, parties, and relaxing in the mid-afternoon heat beneath an apple or oak tree.

There is a sizeable, man-made lake in the middle of the park, dug out as part of the refugees' efforts to collect loam and soil to build the dirt hovels they now reside in. The lake is populated by different species of fish as well as birds and amphibians. Different kinds of reeds and other aquatic plants dot the lakeside.

Surrounding the lake are the various verandas and benches and tables installed by the Burrows to accommodate visitors. These are accompanied by little refugee-run stands selling fruit, ice cream, balloons, trinkets, and other such goods to the passerbys.

The actual refugee dwellings are back towards where the woods are, away from the lake and the park itself. They consist of around ten to twenty houses, all of dirt and wood and loam, built in a crude circle with a little structure in the center serving as the meetinghouse for the residents. Outsiders are welcome to come discuss any concerns, offer gifts, or spend time with the residents in the woods.

Business Name: Gentle Tugs Tours & Transportation
Business Type: Transportation
Name of the person that owns it (or is it city run): Sir Remy Chaucer the Second
What services does it supply: Transportation to Urbem Ascalon and Alessio; Recreational Rooms (for weddings, parties, etc); Tours of Alessio, Urbem Ascalon, and the Burrows area
Where is it located Market District (by the Building)

If you want, describe it:

A massive airship and combat platform formerly in service to an alternate-universe United Kingdom airfleet, the Amelia has been repurposed by her captain, Sir Remy Chaucer the Second, for the purposes of commerce and entertainment. Her weapons have been stripped though she maintains her regal colors and symbols as she gently hovers over the Burrows' Market District.

The Amelia contains all the most up-to-date amenities in her staterooms as well as several large recreational rooms which can be booked for events like weddings, parties, or meetings. She makes daily trips between the Burrows and Urbem Ascalon and weekend trips between the Burrows and Alessio, but also can be booked for private tours and other transportation events provided they remain in the safe zone that is the Burrows, Urbem Ascalon, and Alessio area.

She is crewed by a team of 800 including navigators, engineers, sailors, maids, chefs, officers, and of course the Captain himself. All live aboard the airship, though many hang out in the Burrows during leave.
