I should be allowed to do a ghetto speak post sometime.

Just sayin, growing up in a poorer small town, at a public school where the ratio of black/white/hispanic people is 40/40/20, and somehow earning the title of "honorary black guy" in tenth grade, I am at least semi-fluent in the latest street speak. Plus I'm a meme wizard.

I mean, come on, fam. You should listen to me talk IRL. Nothin but "that's dope" and calling everyone fam, and saying "fuck" every other word. I ain't got no patience for that proper grammar BS...lol.

I've been led to believe that there's a short skip coming up to get the Serendips home. There's probably other skips coming to catch IC time up with RL time; we do that every so often.

So, I'd like to make a suggestion for both: let's skip in week-long hunks. During the first skip, the Serendips re-equip and do other administrivia for getting ready to leave for looking for obsidian. We also start training of various sorts and advance stories. The Serendips are assumed to have introduced themselves to each other, and asked questions of each other, so we don't need to spend any more IC time on that.

Then the Serendips set off, and IC time advances. When they return to the Building, we skip another week. And so on. This provides a steady flow of time while allowing us to catch up IC time.

This also allows us a specific player development goal: Ched can start Romy training the Serendips to fight as a unit during the first week, while we're back at the Building. If necessary, this permits a character controlled by a more skilled military player to help Romy with training, tactics, leadership, and so on.

Agreed. Regular skips cut out the filler and let us focus on important scenes while relegating training, basic tasks, etc to the realm of imagination. Plus, the IC will move more smoothly since we'll be RPing out chunks of the story with regular "And so they went!" interludes instead of random skips that happen whenever we stall.

Also gives off a nice fairytale storybook feel to it. Maybe we can get a snarky narrator voice whenever we have skips happen? :p

I like this, it makes sure we're not wasting as much time and stalling to get our characters basic information they need to know. And ensures that progress should be guaranteed to happen in this chapter/page-like format.

I think the idea is fine. Players should have a chance to weigh in, however, if something they're working on will take time to play out.

A reminder: we need to wrap up Carnival by tomorrow. Your characters do NOT want to be inside when it vanishes. Take that advice to heart, please.

Minerva has hauled out all the supplies. Please, if your character is going to help with that, don't wander over and start up a conversation. Just grab shit and schlep it back to the Building. Thanks.

I may not be online very much within this week and the following two weeks, I'm going to be focusing quite a lot of my efforts on finishing the layout for my college's yearbook. I'll try to post for the Carnival within today.

By which I mean my mom and me. My brothers actually are out of the country currently because their dad's dad just recently died so they flew off to pay respects. It was really sudden, but I'm sure it'll be fine.

Dear God . . .

--

Nah, but my RP idea that I've been formulating. I came up with it the other day, and explained it to Torsii today. It'd have to do with the Pyersai mainly, and would help me delve a lot more into their culture and society. The PC's would be a group of friends exploring a cave in Europe. The group would end up getting lost, and wandering up to a small home carved into the cave-wall. The house, however, would belong to a reclusive Pyersai mage, with less-than-nice intentions on what to do to the guests.

He'd turn half the group into Pyersai minions using arcane magic, and the other group would escape into the caves again. The minions would then be forced to fight for the Mage on his quest to overthrow the Pyersai kingdom, while the other group would be trying to get their friends back, by defeating the mage.

It'd take the player characters on a quest that would bring them to a bunch of unique locations both above and below ground, and there'd be room for side-stories and arcs and such.

I wanted to pitch the idea here, because I'd only want a few people to be in the RP, but I wanted them to be somewhat familiar already, which you guys all are. :p

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

...

Right. I don't think our current format is working. We have people that prefer light and whimsical discussions, and people that prefer heavy stories. We have players that shrug and go along with things because three years' experience has taught them that good things come from it. We have players that want answers to every little thing, and there isn't any suspension of disbelief. And we have players that treat RP as a hard core hobby and crave intensive depth and consistency to their world much to the determent of those around them that seek a laid back game.

We can not accommodate all those things using our current format.

Can we still be epic?

Yes.

How can we change it?

A) Lose the teaching RP status. No skin off my nose. Makes my life easier. However, you do not want to game with non-teaching Cer. I'm a patient mentor. I'm an asshole GM when not mentoring. If we drop the teaching status, each player will be allowed one character to start. Only one. Pick a good one. I might let you add another if you don't annoy me too badly. Don't cry to me about it.

B) We remain a teaching RP but we allow division. This will allow vets to play their stories but keep the lighter players occupied. However, it's up to the players to play their own stories out. The GM runs the main training elements and themed stories but it's not mandated that all players participate. Players determine who goes on their private story. Want to be part of that group? Prove yourself dependable as a player. The majority of the time, players are excluded by other players because they have bad habits: they don't post; they don't read other posts; they put no thought into their own posts; they detract from the story by bringing in their character's own drama-trauma; they lose interest and then whine because there isn't anything to do IC; they don't take initiative.

C) We remain a teaching RP but we disallow division completely. EVERYONE goes on Vargquest. EVERYONE goes to find obsidian. EVERYONE follows the same storyline. NO ONE is permitted to run side stories. We tried this in PL several times. It didn't work.

D) We keep all of this the same. No changes. Players just have to adjust and be less demanding/more attentive/whatever.

I lean towards option B.

What would that look like? A hard reboot initial suggestion.

  • Varg and Fiends comes to a close in order to restart. The end result is that you've managed to recruit them. Good job. Have a biscuit. PCs can't keep their obsidian rings however. They didn't earn them through play.
  • Months have passed. Residents have finally figured out their assess from a hole in the ground. They've learned of each zone and how it benefits them. They can hold their own.
  • Characters can take a bathtub up to the gates and access them. These will lead them to whatever adventure the player wishes to run. Entities (corporeal or otherwise) from those dimensions can not return/invade/intrude upon the Galli dimension without my explicit permission. This setting is not the place to set up your faction.
  • Character stories involving Galli zones are no more. The home setting -- Galli -- remains pristine. We lift the dark vibe to Ascalon. The city still frowns on magic but the underworld elements (crime lords/drugs) aren't as severe. It is nothing but a play zone where PCs can restock or gain information between adventure runs. No Minerva cocaine clubs, no Amanda taking over the uppers. Go fuck with something beyond the gates.
  • Overarching Purpose: PCs have been charged by Demens to recruit as many as possible for the god war. This means teams go through the gates to stealthily seek out whoever he has chosen, or to recover shit necessary to the war's success. Retrieved NPCs will settle in a zone in Galli. CoOPs and I will run these recruitment stories. It also means we will no longer drop new player's PCs in the lobby. A team goes out to retrieve them from whatever peril threatens them. We have warriors. We have competent medical personnel. We have scientists. We can seriously have fun with this.
  • Posting schedules. Players serving as GMs should define posting minimums (once a day, once every two days, at least once a week). Players should adhere to them. Communicate if you can't post. Don't waltz in here after five days of silence to tell us you were busy.
  • Other wants? I think I've included the elements from several TGs here. I'm sure I've missed a few. We can add, subtract, switch up, or drop anything here that doesn't sit well.

As for the current IC state?

It's Sunday. I see people are still in the carnival. Were it not for the request that we change up the game format, we would have skipped.

With the exception of Sep/Nes (story potentially going to a non-PL thread), you need to wrap up your shit. Now. We will progress once discussions regarding a new format are done. Any unresolved business remains unresolved. Anyone still foolish enough to be in the carnival will be dead when it tears itself from the dimension.

Cer, I kind of agree, the reboot idea would be pretty cool, make it interesting to bring in new PCs, and stuff like that. I do hope Varg still goes through maybe?
