They get both. But historically miiltary service was rewarded with a bit of land rather than money.

Free land was for officers. Enlisted men earned citizenship and all that came with it, including a bronze tablet proclaiming their citizenship.

I'm not sure if goblins are smart enough to understand the concept of "paying" them. Magic would require the spell to be kept up - a bit like the D&D story of the farmer and his zombie farmhands.

That would be doing it the hard way. Do it the Batman way - Jump out the window, and when you get less than 56.5 seconds away from the ground, drink the potion or cast the spell.
