Eroris is practically Elder Scrolls but it keeps going and growing.
Heck, there is this RP setting called Equalia that is perhaps literrally MLP:FiM but with Elves, Humans, and Wizards rather then Peguses, Ponies, and Unicorns.
These types of settings permit and RP to attract more then the fan base it's based on as players tend to get nervous stepping into something they are unfamiliar with and typically if an RP is set in a world from a game or book players may bicker over what is and isn't viable in the setting. Thus a reflection/stand in version of the setting that doesn't need to address alternate history scenarios does rather well.
Magic the Gathering recently killed off my favorite, and my brother's favorite characters and is starting a new batch of planswalkers. It's in that situation right now where a lot of the characters are now dead and it feels a bit like a reset as the game returns to the first plane (the plane the first series of cards was set in). So if your idea is like MTG I say go for it regardless due to the situation MTG is in and the success of other reflection/stand in RPs.
I don't know. I have a complex about feeling like I might be copying stuff. I remember when I tried submitting something to the SCP Foundation once. Turns out I'd somehow copied Swamp Thing wholesale despite never hearing of him til then.
Just think of how the creators of Captain America felt when they suddenly learned about Shield ? Those things happen.
