It's February, which is slow time over here for me. Anyone have any upcoming RPs on the pipelines that I might be hyped up about?

A short-form fantasy RP about a regiment of soldiers from one particular place, at the end of a bloody civil war. The war is almost over, but there is one fortified monastery left that needs to be cleared out. Players take command of a battalion of soldiers and march up a forested slope to dislodge the enemy, in the final confrontation before they will be allowed to go home.

It will be deliberately short-form: a story we can finish in a few weeks, with more attention to detail and personal development than a sprawling story, with room in the sandbox to craft something unique. Up to your liking?

I just had an idea for a black comedy RP based primarily on the movies Knives Out and Rashomon.

The story is that a wealthy family matriarch has died under mysterious circumstances, despite it being declared a suicide. The whole concept is that you get to create a character that is part of the family, either as pure blood, an in-law, a part of staff, or even being related to the matriatch by criminal means. As a will reading and funeral is being set up, one detective appears to the family to investigate the matriarch's death with each character detailing their own story as an unreliable narrator.

So basically your character has a role in the mystery, where they explain their side of the story, which is bound to conflict with others. And as this happens, your character is trying to get the fortune that the matriarch leaves behind, while trying not to reveal your character's secret.

Plus, there is lots of black comedy. It is focused around a death after all..

I have an idea rattling about for something akin to Division. Want to call it 'The Waters of Babylon' (based on the short story I read as young teenager). It mostly came about because I started thinking of the actual factions that would exist in a lot of major metropolitan centers post-apocalypse and so want to do something like a survival RPG. You get a fixed amount of points in character creation. You use points to buy skills and handicaps. You must spend as many points on handicaps as you did on skills. You cannot earn more points when you are done, but you can receive skills and handicaps after.

The main antagonist is the world, which the year prior went all to Hell. Viral pandemics, mass rioting, natural disasters, manmade disasters, the whole nine yards. The long story short for the limited system is that most characters have completed their initial development as survivors. It's assumed they're able to outright collect the basics to live, but not thrive. There's enough shelters and encampments around that most who survived, can eke out a living working as a manual laborer or farmer tending to crops and livestock in the ruins of civilization.

The primary goal is to achieve a set of objectives and quests which are being put out by the various factions beginning to rise to power and how the players decide to assist or detract from those efforts. Players could eventually look to create a faction of their own, but that's not the goal of the story, which is moreover a look into how the survivors want the civilization they're a part of to develop. Using preexisting cities cuts down on the need to make maps for me and enables me to look into simply developing the underlying story that came about after the initial events.

Because there's not an actual need for players to look for food (given that they are assumed to have the basic skills to do so already and there's plenty being provided for), the loot system looks more like scavenging for boosts to base stats. The base stats are Strength, Health, Speed, Vision, Capacity, and Damage.

Strength is used to accomplish a physical feat, Health enables a character to suffer more negative status effects before going unconscious or dying. Speed determines how far someone can move, usually in terms of metric distances. Vision determines from what distances items, encounters, and locations can be seen and starts at base 6. Capacity enables more items to be carried in the inventory, though certain items can take up multiple inventory slots. Damage is a fixed value, generally inflicted during combat. During combat, skills and weapons used can be the difference between life and death.

Some items could hold drawbacks in their stat when they deplete or have a special requirement for use. A basic loot table for a journey into an old apartment looks like:

I'll post a little more later when I feel like formatting. But there's also a skills section to the Status table and an effects section, both of which have a bit more mechanically to do with the game. This is not a turn-based RPG or chance-based RPG. The values are set and fixed. A player with 1 Vision can still find the same things as a player with 8 Vision, but the player with 8 Vision takes 1/8th the amount of time doing so. If an item has a set rarity in a loot table at an apartment building of 8, the player with 8 Vision finds it within an hour of Scavenging. A player with 1 Vision spends about 8 hours to do the same.

Combat works the same, both sides go in with the only determining factor being their skills and equipment. A player with the 'Camouflage' skill, can get closer to another player before starting the encounter, which is to the advantage of an ambusher, but it also allows that same player to also move away from potential engagements or remain unseen. The Camouflage skill has a timer though, saying something like "A close player must spend a minute or more looking for you. A near player must spend ten minutes looking for you. A far player cannot find you."

I just had a stupid idea, but while I'm prepping Six Feet Under (the name of my mystery death-themed comedy and semi-horror parody), I had another idea for a RP that's more extreme and nihilistic in concept.

I thought about doing a RP based on the sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, while being influenced by other mature works such as Trainspotting, Fight Club, and Less Than Zero, however I noticed that a lot of people in a RP I was in out of P2TM were delighted in making characters that had flaws. Basically, nearly everyone had a broken character with heavy issues and flaws with themselves, where eventually in-character they comforted each other. For this RP, I want to encourage writing people with heavy flaws, since it can be one hell of an experience.

The overall plot will be the same, but I have trouble determining the exact location. The plot of the RP focuses on your character being a troubled misfit living with a whole bunch of other misfits in an abandoned luxury hotel that is currently inhabited by squatters, junkies, and homeless. The misfits focus themselves on running a decrepit bar from the hotel, while they engage in a variety of schemes and other mischief for their own gain or for some other reason. Despite this, the misfits are portrayed as antiheros in a real-life setting distorted to the point of being compared to the GTA universe.

My proposed locations were Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Florida, and New York. Basically what they all had in common was that they are all places of glamour and popular tourist traps, however the PCs are practically living in the shadow of it all. Los Angeles is heavy towards the influence of Less Than Zero and Ingrid Goes West as it would be more focused on the wannabe celebrities and narcissistic social media influencers, which I imagine would be what some of the misfits strive to be. Las Vegas is much simple, as it deals with the misfits trying to get money with the advantage of the tourists and get involved a bit with the nightlife. Florida was an idea by the movie The Florida Project, which deals with the tourist traps outside of the Orlando theme park area, which I found the location actually more depressing than the rest of the locations presented. Lastly, there is New York that deals with all of the real life oddities of actual New York.

Any suggestions? It is really a far out idea, but it's still unique with some adjusting.

Have you read The Thousand Names by Django Wexler? In his Shadow Campaign series? That's also very good.
