Merlin looked at her, "Magic 101. I know, probably what you expected."

He then looked at the time, "Anyways. You should be heading to class. If you ever need someone to talk to, or anything, just drop by my office, as long as it isn't in first period... First period I teach a class."

She nodded, turning around and beginning to walk away.

Then she looked back over her shoulder, forced a smile, waved slightly, and then was gone.

Class.

English.

Not so bad.

Let's do this...

Nico stiffened and leaned back against the chair when he noticed someone sat down in the seat behind him.

"I knew I should have taken that seat".

The Star of Betlehem. Of course. Now she felt a little silly. She looked at the clock on the wall. Not many minutes left. Aurelia's and James' conversation didn't concern or interest her much, and her painting was done, so she used the time to clean up her place and wash the paintbrushes, the palette, and the colours. She was done just in time for the bell to ring.

As she walked to the English class, she pondered about the homework and which artist she would choose. There were so many that she liked! Salvador Dalí was one, and then there was a lot of contemporary artists in Russia who's style she admired, and a whole bunch of Swedish artist from the late 1800s and early 1900s... and many others too! It would be a tough decision.

There were other things on Julia's mind as well. She had been thinking about taking Magic 101 this semester, but it seemed that would cause conflicts within her schedule, most notably with the art classes, but maybe also her ice hockey training. She would have to ask Merlin if it was possible to solve in any way. Speaking of the Devil, she spotted him down the hallway in the corner of her eye. Should she talk to him right now? Eh, why the heck not? She wouldn't be too late for English.

She walked towards the old wizard, and saw that he stood with another girl from her class. What was her name again? Charlotte? She wasn't entirely sure, but greeted her very cheerfully as she passed.

"Hi Charlotte! ... that's your name, right?" She looked at her and smiled, and then spoke directly to Merlin. "Hi! There is something I would like to talk to you about... if you have time of course."

Merlin

Merlin waxed back as Charlotte left. He then turned to the new girl, Julia Spencer...

Look at you getting all the girls.... Ladies have always seemed attracted towards you, and yet you don't.....

Void. I will go swim in the river Jordan.

"Of course I have time. What is it that you wanted to talk to me about?" He asked with a smile.

"Well..." she started, but suddenly felt shy. In front of her was an ancient and powerful wizard, while she was just a happy amateur. And now she was asking him for favours.

"... I kind of want to be in Magic 101, I really do but... since I have drawing/painting and ice hockey already, it seems it might be a little problem with the schedule... and the time... so I was thinking... if there perhaps could be an alternative solution that you knew about?"

She waited nervously for his answer.

Merlin

Merlin rubbed his chin as he thought and noticed her nervousness, "First off... relax. You don't have to be nervous. Secondly, I'll be honest, this is the first time someone has come to me with request like that." He paused, "I am not sure.... I'll have to speak to administration about it, either that or I'll see about opening a third class during the spare period.... anyways, I'll have to speak to admin."

Julia calmed down. Merlin was the kind of guy you listened to. Maybe because he despite his young looks was so old, almost like a cozy granddad. "Okay, I understand. I'll ask my other teachers as well, if that helps in any way." She smiled at him. "I better get to the English now." She waved him goodbye and headed for the classroom, where she took a seat in the front row.

Luciana and Belvina filed unto English and sat on opposite sides of the classroom, Dominique and Ariana coming up right after.
"My family's visit if for lunch, can't wait to see them. It's been a long time, especially my cousins." Ariana said as Dominique pulled out her English essay.
"I know right, they're like my family too. Your uncle Mike is bringing his wife and kid right?"

Mike entered English class just a little while before the bell rang, and took a seat next to Dominique and Ariana, smiling at the girls as he sat down. "Hey guys, how was ballet?" Mike asked the his sister and her friend. English wasn't' Mike's favorite subject, but it was the first day of class so he doubted it would be too bad. Marius also came into class after voice class sitting down with Bell as he waited for the school bell to ring. Craig also came into class but he merely sat in the back by himself. His head down on the desk, trying to avoid attention.

Soon the bell rang, and a middle aged man came into the room. "Hello Class, sorry I'm late. I had some personal business I had to take care of." He said before walking toward his desk and turning to address the class with a smile. "Well a lot of you know me already but for those of you who don't know, my name is Mr. Connors and I'll be your English teacher this year. So, let's start off with some fun exercises, so I can learn a bit more about you, and you can learn more about yourselves. Don't worry I won't share what you write with anyone and if you ask me not to read yours I won't" Mr. Connors then turned around and began to write on the board. When he was done he stepped aside and revealed a number of questions on the board.

What is your favorite book?
What is your favorite word?
What is your favorite holiday?
What are your hopes for the future?
What's one thing that scares you?
What's one thing that make you happy everyday?

"Now, take out a pen and some paper and take a few minutes to answer these questions." Mr. Connors said, taking a seat as his desk and waiting for his students to finish the assignment.

James sat there looking at his paper the words in grey lead glaring back up at him, What is your favorite book? What is your favorite word? What is your favorite holiday? What are your hopes for the future? What's one thing that scares you? What's one thing that make you happy everyday?

With a bright lightbulb of an idea, figuring he would never see any of these people again at any point in his life he began scrawling on the paper some choice options. His favorite book was labeled as the Quran, his favorite word was Death, for holiday he simply said Hump day, though he thought for some time on the hopes for the future part before writing down that his hope was to one day make the FBI Most Wanted list, the scare part took awhile before he found something funny to write and thus he wrote "the words I am pregnant", the happy part made him wonder for some time and in the end he wrote "the screams of small beings"; of course no one had to know that it was a slaughterhouse of farm animals that he was stuck in everyday or the fact that goats actually produce a mildly funny noise when you accidentally scare them.
He looked over the paper with a snicker, he couldn't wait to see the teacher's face as he picked all the papers up, it would be so worth the detention.
What is your favorite book? Quran
What is your favorite word? Death
What is your favorite holiday? Hump day
What are your hopes for the future? To be on the FBI's Most Wanted list
What's one thing that scares you? The words "I am pregnant"
What's one thing that make you happy everyday? The screams of small beings

James then thought about lunch, he really could not wait until then, in fact he was thinking of "going to the bathroom" and cutting class entirely. It was not really his choice to go here, but all he had to do was survive one year, surviving did not mean he couldn't break a few rules though - all he had to do was meet the minimum requirements to graduate, and then he was free. First day and already he was planning a jail break.

Todd entered English class five minutes late, with his head down in defeat, and his backpack hanging simply by his side. He was late... again. But then he remembered about the teacher, and looking up at him with a defeated smile, asked,"Did I miss anything?"

Nico stared blankly at the paper. What to write? As NIco stared at the paper he began to draw blanks.

'Well I could just ask him to not look at mine'. Nico scribbled a little on the paper and flipped it over to see if the scribble was visible from the other side. He could tell that it was just a random scribble, so he figured he had to write something. So, for each answer Nico wrote "Cheerios", which was what he had for breakfast. Smiling at his ingenuity, Nico turned the paper upside down and covered his smile discretely.

Todd, relived that he didn't get chewed out, thanked the teacher for being merciful, and took a seat in the back of class. He then started to fumble with his backpack, trying to get a pencil and paper out, and hoping he wasn't making to much noise. Grabbing what he needed, he looked up at the questions on the board, and just wrote what popped into his mind.

What is your favorite book? The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
What is your favorite word? Health
What is your favorite holiday? Thanksgiving
What are your hopes for the future? Unknown

Julia wasn't sure what to write. She thought for a moment and sighed. It wouldn't look any good to leave the questions unanswered though, so she decided to just write whatever came to mind.

What is your favorite book? I don't know. There are a lot of good ones. I like the ones about Molly Moon and the ones with Nancy Drew, and a lot of others that I can't recall right now.
What is your favorite word? Happiness.
What is your favorite holiday? Christmas! :-)
What are your hopes for the future?
What's one thing that scares you? Death, the loss of a loved one. Climate change.
What's one thing that make you happy everyday? All that's good in this world.

She had left one question blank. What if you didn't know what you hoped for in the future? She sat quiet for a moment, then looked around at her classmates. All of them were writing. Ugh... So she was the only one without a clue. Reluctantly, she raised her hand for help.

Michael wondered a bit what his sister and Dom had written on their papers. He found himself espeacially thinking about Dom and he blushed a little and tried to push the thoughts away as he turned to his own paper:
What is your favorite book? Shoeless Joe and Me
What is your favorite word? Pride
What is your favorite holiday? Superbowl Sunday
What are your hopes for the future? To make my father proud
What's one thing that scares you? Failure
What's one thing that make you happy everyday? Seeing the girl who captured my heart

Craig:
What is your favorite book? Moby Dick
What is your favorite word? Acceptance
What is your favorite holiday? Easter
What are your hopes for the future? To find a place where I belong
What's one thing that scares you? Nothing
What's one thing that make you happy everyday? The Piano

Marius:
What is your favorite book? Le Petit Prince
What is your favorite word? Trust
What is your favorite holiday? New Year's Eve
What are your hopes for the future? To be able to trust someone completely
What's one thing that scares you? Be lied to
What's one thing that make you happy everyday? The Water

As all the students were writing, Mr. Connors saw a girl raising her hand from her seat. He walked toward her, "Hi you have a question..." He looked at her paper, "Julia, is there something you need?"

Julia looked up at Mr. Connors and lowered her hand. "Yes... I don't know how to answer the fourth question." She could of course write "world peace", but that seemed so obvious and unoriginal. Nothing wrong with world peace in itself of course, but Julia just didn't like it as an answer. And now her new braces hurt again. She knew her teeth would adapt and that she'd get used to them gradually, but she already longed for the day when she no longer needed it.

Wait. She could write about that!

"I just came up with someting, you can go now Mr. Connors", she said and swiftly started to write again. She leaned over the paper so he wouldn't see. "You can read this later, but don't read it up loud in front of the whole class."

Mr Connors smiled at Julia when she seemed to figure out the problem for herself. "Don't worry, no one will see these except me." He told his student, and once everyone was done he collected the papers and placed them in a pile on his desk before turning back towards the class.

"I'd like to start today with talking about what the purpose of this class will be. You see, you all have a very unique place in our society. Most of the world believes you to be myths or legends, and so they write about you, unfortunately often not in the most flattering of ways. Some of your kinds may have been predicted as villains, and as monsters. So, in addition to basic instruction about the English language and it's structure, this class will look at the literary culture surrounding supposed myths and legends. The purpose of this will be to first, help you understand the way society has constructed certain images of non-humans, and second, to help you cope with the difficulties that these images can bring upon your lives. You see, one of the hardest part about not being normal, is the emotional struggles that go on within you. I'm sure I don't have to tell you all this, and so you will understand why this part of the class will be very important."

Mr Connor turned and began to write a name down on the board. "Now, has anyone heard of the name Bram Stoker? Could anyone tell me who he was?"

Mr. Connors smiled and nodded at Dominique's enthusiastic answer. "Yes Dominique, that's correct." He said, having had Dominique in a previous class and so knew her name. "Born in 1847 and dying in 1912, Bram Stoker is one of the founders of the so called, supernatural fiction genres, and his most famous book Dracula became one of the most influential pieces of fiction written in the 19th century. However, as I'm sure you all know, vampires are far from fictional. They are quite real, and while some engage in violence like the titular character in Stoker's novel, many try to live peaceful lives among humans. There are many who believe, and there's some evidence to support this, that Stoker actually interacted with Vampires at some point in his life, and this experience is what led to his depiction of Dracula. Now, my question to all of you is this. If Stoker knew the truth about vampires' existence, why do you think he might have chosen to write Dracula as fiction? Rather than expose the existence of vampires to the human world?" The English teacher asked his class, wondering what answers they might give.

"So long as we are talking Stoker and not Stroker, the later turns up an awkward search on Bing." James spoke up after the girl before him, "He wrote Dracula and the Snake's Pass, Lady of the Shroud, rather supernatural stories if I remember right. Some allege that the events of Dracula were real and that he actually followed alongside Helsing, Harker, Quincy, and company on their quest to kill the vampire." James absent mindedly moved his tongue over his canines, oddly enough they were very sharp and thinking of vampires constantly reminded him of his oddly sharp teeth - well, all of them were rather feral like, but specifically his canines were daggers in grade.

"Course that could be about as true as the urban legends of this "Slender man" fellow who tells fifteen and ten year old girls to offer their friend up to Satan in the forest, in other words completely a lie made up by others for the purpose of either covering up a fact or inventing one." James' tone was not so much critical as matter of fact, it was a flat and almost monotone tone of voice.

After Mister Conners spoke James raised his hand, the answer of why he did not reveal the existence of vampires, or the supernatural as a whole, to the world seemed very evident to he who had studied political science along with sociology.

Julia raised her hand and answered right away. "Maybe because it was better to entertain people with stories instead of scaring them, and because he would make more money that way. Plus, no one would have believed him", she guessed. "Or he was actually just making it all up. Wasn't the woman who wrote Frankenstein before him though?"

She glanced at James and listened to him. "Who uses Bing these days?" she thought. Other than that, he had a point.

"What she said, most the populace would never have believed Stoker and those who did would have found ample proof, and with those findings have started a great purge of the world. I mean, just think if it became common knowledge today of everything we all know, every asshole on the planet from the ragheads to the rednecks and their grandmothers would start a literal witch hunt, and technology has come far enough and numbers have lowered that it would be more like whack a mole with all us as the moles. Pop your head up and BOOM! Predator drone. Difference is it would have been lesser back then and prolonged the time of the purge as man was not as advanced; it still would have been inevitable though. Thus why mankind as a whole cannot learn what truly lies in the dark, fear will make good and evil indistinguishable in their eyes... it would be beyond a tragedy." James' eyes downcasted to his table, the loss of their childish glint made him seem so serious as his sea blue eyes turned to stormy grey, it appeared to be something that had weighed on his shoulders, a weight that could never be removed. Just how much he knew compared to his friends outside this building of bricks and mortar. A world where he never could be who he truly was, never again.
