The White Lotus movement who freed China from Yuan rule were originally a very crazy bunch of Buddhists (Buddhists nonetheless), so if a realistic POD then alters what kind of government takes over China once the red turban rebellion or a similar event takes place I'm happy.

Basically the Shi will the help in the Red Turban uprising and essentially stab the Ming in the back by declaring themselves the true rulers of China which will lead to a six year war in which they succeed on top.
