And, the enemy is charging in open fields in certain areas not far from my ships. Easy pickings.
That and my soldiers marking targets with smoke bombs so the ships can know where to aim.
Other then the Mississippi being a constantly flowing body of water, of course.
E: Also being that close, your ship could rather easily be severely damaged by American artillery. Not only can they bring in heavier guns then your ship has, they'll also be able (And already should) have earthworks around their guns, making them well defended. Being land based gives them better accuracy, and with a First rate ship of the line being a very big target. They could also use 'hot shot' which would be devastating against any ships you have.
