I don't get the obsession with First Rates. Nice for a flagship and such, but there is really no need to have more then a dozen, and that's for the largest of navies.

Bit of a waste when you consider just how expensive a First Rate ship of the line costs, basically the same as a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier when adjusting the currency of the age. Not to mention the general inaccuracy of naval bombardments of the era. Expensive, but I suppose it's pretty flashy, if wasteful.

Except two are captured from the Spanish, not built by me. So technically I only paid for the construction of two(even if I still have to maintain them).
And what about against cavalry and infantry in open fields?

Which is why the Pirates have a few second and third rates, speed and wolf pack.

If you and your enemies are fighting near the coast, I suppose the sheer amount of cannon will be able to cause some damage, but don't expect anything close to it being accurate. Not only would the ship be constantly in motion (Even if anchored, thanks to waves and currents and such), but they would also have to anchor a fair distance away so as to not get stuck on any submerged embankments or get stranded in the shallows as the tides go out.

Meanwhile, as everyone is bombarding each other with cannons and muskets, I'll be opening trade relations with American states. Also, can we have the co-OP and OP list the nations existing per continent? It's good to have a one-stop reference?

The ships are in the Mississippi River, with the enemy in heights behind Baton Rouge. Not much waves or currents there.

And, the enemy is charging in open fields in certain areas not far from my ships. Easy pickings.
That and my soldiers marking targets with smoke bombs so the ships can know where to aim.
